iPad Mini
iPad
iPad Pro
iPad Pro Max

Simples.
You mean where "pro" and "pro max" bear no relationship to what chips are in them? Yep, definitely seems like the sort of chaos Apple would allow out of marketing without blinking an eye. See also the 3-4 unrelated products called "Apple TV"....

With all the refreshes due at the same time, it gives them a rare opportunity to tidy up a few things and better differentiate between the models. Hopefully.
Let's hope so. The iPad line has become a confusing mess. They should just follow the iPhone categorization. Discontinue the Air and have 2 sizes in each level, (10.9" and 13"), with the Mini thrown in the mix for those that want it.

My biggest issue with the iPad is not hardware but rather the software. I would love to be able to get an iPad as a laptop replacement for my kid to use but it's simply not possible. There's some software that his school requires that doesn't exist on iPad. The cloud based software is a bit better except that it's designed for desktop browsers which means that there are parts that don't work (even when you try "desktop mode"). Some of that software just doesn't work properly on desktop safari either and requires Chrome which is gimped on iPad. Having actual desktop apps on iPad would fix all of this.

On the hardware side, the keyboards are ridiculously priced. Where I live, they're half the cost of an iPad which is absurd. The 10th generation doesn't even have a headphone jack so I'd need to replace his non-bluetooth headphones. For about $100 (iPad + keyboard), I can get him a base refurbished m1 MacBook. For a kid, I think the iPad makes more sense because of the form factor but the software is just not there.

There are workarounds for some of these but I don't want my kid to deal with hacks. The software needs massive upgrades.

Can we have a better filing system please!
Apple markets the iPad as a laptop replacement but there’s just so many things I miss from MacOS that makes my iPad really annoying.
Oh, they also have never marketed the iPad as a laptop replacement. You completely misunderstood “what is a computer?” What it means is that the iPad is powerful and that it should be considered as a computer whenever anyone is choosing a device. It was never a laptop replacement and was never intended to be. Computer does not equal laptop.

Just a computer with a screen and a trackpad in a laptop configuration. But nah. Never meant to be a laptop replacement

Exactly. Laptops are based on mouse and keyboard. Note Apple spent a lot of R&D coming up with a cursor that acts like a finger. There is no mouse cursor on an iPad. Just that should tell you Apple never intended it to be a laptop replacement. The only reason it has a keyboard is because it sucks to type on glass since touch typing is impossible.

I regret upgrading my iPad from the 2018 Pro (I currently have an M1.) It is a great device, but it literally does nothing extra for me that the 2018 didn't do. For me, the iPad Pro hasn't been touched since 2018, so it is due some functionality improvements and design updates (Yes - it did get major software upgrades over time, and the magic keyboard changed things, but the 2018 got basically all of them minus external displays.)

My next iPad will likely be a mini, assuming they don't just phone in that update...

They definitely have, just explicitly avoided marketing it as a MacBook replacement. Phil Schiller was actually on stage talking about how he wanted to see Windows users switching over to the iPad as it was much better, and this was right back with the original iPad Pro. "The ultimate PC replacement" I think were his exact, immortal words...

Apple: "Today we're adding a 12.9" iPad Air to our incredibly bloated lineup and eliminating nothing."

Another way to look at the current lineup is it offers iPads at price points for different user needs. Just want to do light work such as check mail, browse internet and basically use an iPad like a larger phone - mini or iPad 9th or 10th gen are perfect for that.

Need more power, perhaps for drawing or want more future proofing in terms of processor - the Air does that.

More demanding work or want a larger screen? - There's the Pro line. I have a 12" Pro because I use it as a second monitor when traveling.

There's a wide price gap that makes teh iPad an affordable option for more customers.

Exactly how does PC replacement mean laptop? PC is the generic term for computer. It refers to neither a desktop nor a laptop. Never has laptop ever been mentioned in any iPad commercial. Windows is the competition, so of course they want to get people to switch but that doesn’t mean they’re going to replicate the Windows laptop experience. “What is a computer” means exactly what it says. It means they want you to choose it for your computer. They didn’t say they wanted you to choose it for your laptop. Again computer does not equal laptop.

They consider the iPad a computer, and enforce as rigidly as possible the touch-first aspect of it. Craig Federighi even said that Apple engineers put macOS on an iPad and found the experience to be terrible, which is why they will never allow macOS on an iPad. Considering iPadOS and macOS are the same OS, only with different libraries, it probably took them five minutes to port it. If they ever intended to, they would have done it years ago. But they consider macOS to be touch hostile. Even when they put desktop-like features in their OS, they always make it touch first and do it differently than a desktop does it. I don’t understand how people still don’t realize Apple will never make it a laptop replacement because they consider it a terrible idea.

They could replicate Microsoft’s mistakes with the Surface Pro, but they aren’t that dumb. Microsoft has been trying for over a decade to create a hybrid and have failed miserably every time because a hybrid always means crippling compromises with battery life, power, and usability. Surface Pros are mediocre laptops and horrendous tablets. I had a Surface Pro, the worst purchase I’d ever made. I gave it to my son for taking notes in college, but he ditched it for an iPad.

And the marketing machine of Apple works at top speed. Next year a lot of new equipment, at least 20% faster. WOW. When do these rumors stop. PLEASE!!!

This is so convoluted. You're trying to argue 'replace your Windows computer with an iPad Pro' is completely different to 'replace your Windows laptop with an iPad Pro'? A Laptop is just the traditional portable form factor of a PC. Whether or not the iPad does things slightly differently is an aside, Apple made the comparison and told people replace your Windows laptop with an iPad Pro - Phil Schiller actually says this directly in the March 2016 keynote.

I will probably downgrade my 2020 12.9 inch iPad Pro to a iPad Air when they come out. The screen is too big and I hate FaceID on an iPad lol

Focus modes? Isn't that what they're for, to separate work and personal?
Focus does not separate apps and data. While separate accounts (logins) are probably not practical for iPad, having ability to switch profiles where data is sandboxed by profile would enable a true separation. Imaging having Work profile and your mail accounts, bookmarks, zoom, slack accounts are only work, then having Personal profile where those application use their own data. Right now I either have to use separate apps where possible (Apple Mail for personal and Outlook for work or Safari for personal and Firefox for work) but with apps like Slack or Zoom it is not.

I am more and more convinced there's going to be a M3 Pro variant on an ipad pro. I was wondering why apple took out bionic and renamed A17 to pro. however, i think what this means is that the lineup will be confusing. Just like how the watch lineup is confusing.

I think it'll be

Ipad Pro 11 + 13: m3 + promotion
iPad pro ultra: m3 pro + OLED
ipad air: m3 + no promotion.
ipad mini: a17 pro

what would make the most sense is

iPad Pro 11 + 13: m3 Pro + OLED
ipad air / mini: 7 +11 + 13: m3 regular ol lcd.

But the issue here is the rumors peg oled ipad at 1500 which creates a huge price vacuum
