Apple GPT, coming to Apple support near you. Thousands upon thousands of 1st and 2nd line tech support will be replaced by an AI bot and when the AI bot thinks it cannot handle the call it will switch over to a human in tech support.

Of course Apple is lagging behind on this field. This is the future of virtual assistants, and Apple needs to start working on their own version as soon as possible.

A nice differentiation feature could be making it work on device but I’m not sure the neural engine, CPU and GPU on the latest SoCs such as the A14, A15 and A16 are enough to power it.
Just for comparison (apples and peaches, I know ;-)

You can already run a somewhat downsized but still very capable GPT on a Raspi 4 locally. So keeping it on device should not be too difficult to achieve on a much more powerful iPhone i.e.

Wow, I didn’t know that. Then, I guess it’s totally possible. Thanks for the data.

I really think on device processing is the way to go for many of this features, and thankfully Siri is starting to work on device for many of its functions.

Guys, it's simple - They'll use it internally on the cloud, and then when they're able to create a model that is able to run on an iPhone, THAT's when it's suddenly a new Siri feature.
That's when you can ask Siri to send your boss the new proposal you made last night in Pages, but forgot to email it.
Or you ask Siri for all the pictures of dogs that were taken on rainy days while also on vacation.
Or you ask it to create a shopping list for a Lasagna despite not specifying the ingredients.

It's not new that they can make a GPT model, it'll be new that they're able to run it on-device because they create the chips, the model and the interfaces between the model and the apps and ecosystem.

Meanwhile, on Android you'll have to send not only the request to the cloud, but all of your files, since it won't be able to access the files on your device from the model running on the cloud.

I really hope that means they’ll improve the current Siri as well. Siri is pretty good for controlling simple stuff on the phone such as setting alarms, notes & reminders, making calls, etc. But when asked about scientific questions and stuff like that, most of the time she’ll either say “I found this on the web” or “Hm, I’m not sure I understand”. So I’d say it’s a good assistant for controlling stuff on the phone, but definitely not a reliable source of information.
Though I hope they at least make it more compatible with third-party apps, because right now it can mostly do stuff only through the native Apple apps.

But let’s not ignore the fact that the current ChatGPT is not perfect either. Some of the info it provides are outdated, and that’s all because it needs to be trained and updated from time to time. Not to mention, it also provides inaccurate info sometimes.

The same strategy like they used for their product line-up. Chaotic without a meaningful cause. Just-stick a BETA label and wait for 10 years for screen capture capabilities.
You really love screen recordings, don't you

How is Apple lagging here? I seemed to have missed the Google Assistant and Alexa announcements on shipping GPT functionality.

A simpler "general" model would still probably require them to double shipping RAM over the 14, and may still have performance issues. I don't think such a generalized model would ship soon - you'll continue to get comparatively simple specialized models to spin up as needed (text correction) or run in the background (fall/workout detection, "Hey Siri" detection).

Apple doesn't even have its own search engine capabilities.

Take a look at the incredible capabilities of Microsoft Copilot both on Windows 11 and Office. That’s just the beginning. And yeah, Google is also lagging here, but in my opinion, even without a generative language behind, their assistant is better than Siri.

The race of generative language AI has began and I only hope Apple is working on its own technology, even if it’s just as a barebones to other features and not a chat bot.

If Siri is an indication. It will probably be able to make screen recordings in about 10 years.
I’m curious. What does Siri have to do with screen recordings? Do you just mean using Siri to start a screen recording?

D'uh... That's no secret nor is it news. They already officially announced "transformer based" enhancements to Siri in their WWDC presentation video that was seen by millions of people. Guess what the "T" in GPT stands for?
they announced that they were using a Transformer for text prediction in typing and in speach to text but they didn’t explicitly tie that to Siri. You can see that those things would be useful in a new Sir but Apple did not connect those dots.

Hope Apple’s variation on AI is a better more useful product for consumers.
I would expect Apple to use Transformer/LLM AI to enhance specific functions and activities in their devices. I don’t expect them to just put out a general “chat bot” like ChatGPT that would be used to search for information and bring back something that looks like an answer.

They should use it to improve Siri’s ability to determine what action is being asked and its ability to apply that to one or more services provided by Apple or by third party apps in a more flexible way.

Apple's problem is that these LLMs (Large Language Models) are very good at generating responses, but many times the information in the response sounds authoritative but is WRONG.

The difference between Google Search and ChatGPT is that Google points you to many sources of the information which could be right or wrong and leaves it to you to sift through it all. But GPT makes up new content that sounds good but is generally inaccurate.

I think what needs to be done is create a GPT-like search engine that summarized actual source materials and also provides links to the sources.

The problem with LLMs is that you can ask them something like "Tell me about George Washington's first grandchild named Ann." and the LLM will do exactly as you asked, it will tell you a few facts about her life. But in reality, Washington had no grandchildren.
I don’t think Apple should implement this kind of AI ”search engine”. The value is low in that and it’s not an area that Apple has any advantage in. What they should do is apply this to the input and output of things you can do on your phone.

I have a question: If Apple is working on 'AppleGPT'. Does Apple really know what to do with it?

Apple doesn't even have its own search engine capabilities. Microsoft has BING then you have Google Search Engine and so many other search engine platforms where AI GPT can be used.
Actually Apple has had it’s own search engine for the last three years. iOS14 and later uses it instead of Google. Search ”Applebot” for more information.

Do you mean spotlight? I asked Spotlight a question and it ported me over to google. Spotlight is a good search engine for stuff on my iPad but for outside questions it still uses Google.
