Hasn't someone already developed a system for this it's called the powermat or something why don't they just incorporate that into their products? and no apple will NOT use micro usb. THough I'd like a magsafe iphone charger I doubt they'd change it

Solar panels? Really?

Let me be what appears to be the first to say- I do not need nor want SOLAR PANELS on my cell phone. My cell phone (like 95% of iPhone users I imagine) stays tucked inside my pocket or glued to my face for 99% of the time I am outside. Any opportunity my phone would have to be receptive to light for charging, it is inside at work on my desk or at home plugged in.

Solar panels would simply jack the price up even more while adding minimal functional real world value. For the love of pete, please don't muck around with those. How about they take care of any number of truly applicable things before they bother playing with solar panels, like, hmmmm, getting flash to work "properly"???

Possibly something like this?

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-07-t-shirt-absorbing-ambient-video.html

Imagine if Apple managed to combine solar voltaic cells, KINETIC charging, AND something similar to this "ambient sound energy absorbing" stuff into a phone. And heck, while we're being far out there, what about somehow using the electrical signals that come from the body/skin? LOL! :D

Something like that, yep! Here's the article I was referring to: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/12/sound-waves-to-charge-cell-phones.php

It´s such a shame a divice like this dos not have a solar panel on it´s back... so much better for nature... so much better for the devices uptime. You just put it on your desk while you are at work, on the table while you are on a trainride, on your car board while you are driving to work or somewere... and it prittymuch never will run out of batery again.

Solar panels aren't "so much better for nature"! Do you know what goes into the production of solar panels? It's hugely energy intensive process, and uses quite a few nasty chemicals. The environmental benefit of solar panels comes from having them around for quite a long time (like 30 years). How long do you plan on using that one iPhone? 2-3 years?

Now you can argue that it'd be a better user experience not having to charge your phone as often, but claiming that it'd be environmentally friendly is just complete crap.

Maybe it will have small reactor in it and never need charging? :p

I think the challenge would be how do you make charging "on the go" feasible without something you can plug in????

Confession: when I read this the first time, I thought they were talking about "charging" in the monetary sense. I was relieved when this wasn't an annoucement about how Apple was proposing another monthly fee that goes straight to them for the privelege of owning such a device, which is the only thought that came to my mind. :)

Don't they already have these kinds of chargers?
Not according to Apple, they'll claim it's "Magical & Revolutionary"...

They make me laugh so hard, the flippin guys are delusional. Especially the mouthpiece himself

Oh, and for the record? This "technology" has been around since the 1700's. Yes that long ago.

What a bunch of hot air coming out of Cupertino these days :)

Charging

I kind of figured this out a whiile ago. I just wondered when companies would implemement it.

"It is unclear exactly what charging mechanisms Apple is exploring, but it is possible that the company is considering using induction charging or some other similar wireless system that would negate the need to plug in a cable. "

An ac charger similar but I don't think it was wireless. My thought was an AES encrypted chip in both the ac chargerc and the device. The device would be unique to the charger having the same key, and if they match, charging begins. No Bluetooth or wireless keys

I just thought Apple were doing something similar. But I couldn't believe no one has thought of this before, particually with the ever growing cable-less connections around.

And thoughts.?

Let's look at this a different way... Maybe they're getting rid of the 30 pin connector.

Didn't I read (some time ago) that Apple was on some team that was designing a 'standard' plug in interface, so all phones everywhere could use the exact same chargers. (save waste, resources, etc).

Since we'll be able to sync over wifi, there's no real need for 30 pins any more, is there? Maybe Apple will be the first company to use a new standard-across-all-phones charge/data connector?

just pondering...

Pretty sure they already have wireless chargers but from what i've heard, contact with the device and the charger still has to be made, It'll be good if Apple can be the first with truly wireless charging

Hey, I got it!

Maybe this is one of those experimental features that get toyed with in an early stage prototype and gets weeded out from the hundreds of designs before a single winner emerges in the final shipping product.

I heard the next iPhone will charge whiles you hold it in your hands - Heat Induction - seriously!

Do you have any idea how much money apple makes licensing out the 30pin connector? Apple won't be dropping the connector!

Apple just needs to find a more pratical way of charging for the days we forget the 30-pin connector. Now since people are suggesting spaceships and nuclear powered iPhones I'll go ahead and say heat induction or the iPhone charges as long as you have a pulse. when you do not have a pulse... well you have the 30-pin connector.

What about wanting to sync my iPhone with my computer somewhere I don't have a wifi connection? Am I just S.O.L. until I get back to a hotspot?

Apple is probably doing whatever it can to one day get rid of the 30 pin connector altogether so it can make the iPhone thinner and lighter.

Weren't they also experimenting with a thinner headphone jack?

Those are the two ports on the iPhone that they currently are stuck with. Apple doesn't like being stuck with anything, so this is definitely something Apple is likely pursuing.

haha. If you're iphone is in your pocket 99% of the time then what do you care? you don't use it anyway? You shouldn't have any battery or charging updates, because you only use your iphone 1% of the time? right?

solar all the way. or nuclear. yes, i'll take a small nuclear reactor in my pocket please.

I personally think it will be kinetic energy. They use it in watches and it's somewhat a mature technology. However, the biggest drawback is the amount of energy it produces. Very miniscule. Using this tech will be a form of battery assistance, so regular plug-in is still required.

Think about it. When you play games on the iPhone, a lot of the games are require physics and that's where kinetic will come into play. How often do take out or play with your phone? Is your phone low on battery? Take 5 minutes and swing it around (just don't toss it) to make emergency calls.

Apple's great at re-inventing the wheel and I will put my money down on this if I had to choose.

I was thinking about Kinetic energy as a battery assist as well. If just walking around during the day could give you a 1/4 charge, then the iPhone (which lasts me two days between charges) would become a three day phone, probably even for relatively heavy users. That would be a big improvement for a lot of people. I'm not sure if even 1/4 of a charge would be doable over the course of even an active day. We might really be talking about a charging mechanism which is orders of magnitude too small to power things like the iPhone screen. Granted a watch has a few moving parts, but there are just a few and it doesn't have to emit photons or due millions of computations a second.

Solar wouldn't work because of (a) charge is too weak, (b) phone's back is often covered with a case, (c) phone is often in pocket, purse or drawer, and (d) night time. Also, solar panels might be fragile unless well covered by that gorilla glass and frankly that gorilla glass on the back is why a lot of folk put the phone in a full case instead of just the bumper.

So Apple is going to "invent" the touchstone Palm invented years ago? Or perhaps MicroUSB? Sorry, but no charging method is being invented here.

If it's sharing the magsafe with your Mac, that would be neat, but would alienate many users. Yes, people who own iPhones also use PCs.

I hear the iPhone 7 is going to be a spaceship.

Brilliant! post of the decade!

Dumb me, when I first read 'charging', I thought it is referring to a different way Apple is going to charge money for the iPhone ;)

You are not that far off. I am violating a NDA by telling you this, The iPhone 6 will charge by iTunes. You purchase your electrons from the App Store, then they are shipped to you by the cell network. Try to only charge your phone when you have good signal or are on WiFi as packet loss can waist quite a bit of power.

Induction chargers are nothing new. Also HP has a lot of the Palm patent portfolio to charge smart-phones via inductance. This is just a fluff piece to keep the stock price up during the summer.

Induction charging may not be new, that is not to say a new way of doing induction charging may not be found.

I'd like that too, however I'd never want 0 hardware buttons until software is 100% freeze and crashproof. What will you do when your phone freezes?

Push a paperclip into the reset button for five seconds?

Great game. What the hell does this have to do with anything on the forum though?

he meant as in potato battery
