Ok, I'm putting this inductive charging rumor together with the previous rumors of a touch (not physical) Home button, then add bluetooth headset, syncing over the net, and the previous rumors of Apple being interested in a programmable GSM (instead of the card). That about does it! Completely sealed iPhone! And it'd be just like Apple to do, wouldn't it? :)

fully submersible. The iP68phone?

I really don't think Apple is gonna discontinue their Universal Connector and /or move to miniUSB or completely wireless - not with all the 3rd party devices out there that make use of it; and including it as 2nd option for charging would take up too much space imho and therefore contradict previous rumors about an "even more compact" iPhone...
Maybe it will be an option for iPhone 6/7 to give 3rd party vendors time to adjust and discontinue their products / move to AirPlay...

Manufacturers have agreed with the European Union to a charger standard based on micro USB. This is to be rolled out in 2012. Apple has signed up according to this report http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-10274953-94.html

Apple's current cable already meets the standards put forth by that agreement. The Apple cable terminates in a USB-A male plug, and their mains charger terminates in a USB-A female socket. This is enough for compliance. No other adapters are required, nor is the on-device socket required to be changed.

USB doesn't support the full set of functions currently supported by the dock connector pinout, so it will never be used a replacement.

Seems a bit pointless. Yeah it would be cool but I mean personally I would charge my phone overnight, don't think I could care less about how it's charging as long as it is charging.

The induction charger for my 3DS is great. But I hope Apple include both an induction charger method and a Mini-USB charge method (as per the EU rules). Just so I don't have to carry around another charger.

Lets hope they make it waterproof in the process, so you don't have to use a Phonedome for protection (when sailing etc.)

hope for deployment of solar cells laying under the lcd.. as seen on macrumors

Or on the back of the phone? That might explain the glass-backed iphone 4 (to let the light through) and the puzzling design of the apple bumper "case" which deliberately doesn't cover the back of the iPhone 4 at all. Why not protect a large, nonfunctional and fragile area of glass? Seemed like an odd design decision at the time.

It's almost as if solar charging was planned for the iphone4 but pulled before going into production. They kept the glass back so they could field-test it's durability for iPhone5 when solar might be ready for production? Who knows?

It´s such a shame a divice like this dos not have a solar panel on it´s back... so much better for nature... so much better for the devices uptime. You just put it on your desk while you are at work, on the table while you are on a trainride, on your car board while you are driving to work or somewere... and it prittymuch never will run out of batery again.

...

i thought 9 months ago there were rumors of apple looking into putting solar panels under the lcd (and likely also under the glass back)

I remember reading about a technology that charges a battery via sound waves. The more you talk, the more battery you get. That'd be cool.

Possibly something like this?

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-07-t-shirt-absorbing-ambient-video.html

Imagine if Apple managed to combine solar voltaic cells, KINETIC charging, AND something similar to this "ambient sound energy absorbing" stuff into a phone. And heck, while we're being far out there, what about somehow using the electrical signals that come from the body/skin? LOL! :D

They may be using new intel tech called wireless resonant energy link

http://software.intel.com/en-us/videos/wireless-resonant-energy-link-wrel-demo/

http://newsroom.intel.com/docs/DOC-1119

I'm not sure if there has been any new developments with the technology, but with apple's track record with using unreleased intel tech, it seems conceivable that this could make it's debut in an apple iDevice. (that is if it was able to be scaled down appropriately to fit a mobile phone form factor)

Wow that video shouldn't have been done by an intern

Dammit. Iphone 5 is sounding more like a dud every day.

Not to worry I'm sure that whatever iteration or specification Apple release there will be something that someone will be moaning about.. "Oh only a subsonic temporal time shift generator! I wanted a 5D holographic warp multiplier"

Potato.

Portal 2 is now.

Great game. What the hell does this have to do with anything on the forum though?
