All of this hassle could have been prevented if they offered under display fingerprint scanner option like others.
Didn’t even need to remove Face ID.
But I guess that cost money and they have already maxed out how much they can charge for iPhones.

Hmm, $229 dongle to unlock with mask on and another device to charge every day or twice a day.

Honestly, the ONLY reason I needed to unlock my phone with a mask on is to use the Face ID on phone for Apple Pay to pay for something when I was in an establishment and had to wear a mask.

this doesn’t even work for that and that’s the main use case during COVID

aside from this it’s kinda useless

It’s working fine for me, but it would have been a lot more useful had they released the feature with 14.2 or 14.3. My muscle memory for my passcode that I developed over the last year is faster than the watch unlock most times. Not always, but most times the unlock has a long enough delay that I could’ve just entered my several character long passcode. It’s going to take a bit to get used to not having to automatically enter my passcode when wearing a mask.

If you already have an Apple Watch and it’s with you at the grocery store while wearing a mask, why not just use the Apple Pay on your Watch…? I don’t get what the problem is with all of these people crying that it doesn’t work with Apple Pay. You have Apple Pay setup on your phone, but not your watch? What is the logic behind that? The security risk of authenticating Apple Pay on the phone this way is far greater than whatever “inconvenience” you people might be feeling. Setup Apple Pay on your Watch! That’s what it’s there for! Double clicking the side button is much faster than pulling out the phone anyway.

I just tested it and it worked fine as described. Interested to see if it times out like a poster on page 1 noted.

It is curious why they didn't allow this for the iPads with FaceID. I'm sure it'll get introed soon enough though.

This should be pinned! Apple Pay on the watch is the most convenient feature.

So…. The typical “works for some”.
Tried 10 times after the supposed iOS 14.5 release, 10 out of 10 it fails. Restart does not solve the problem. What’s worse, it does not work with iPad. :(
I just could not get it work during the entire beta cycle. Same for automatic audio switch.

But why only unlock with your watch if you are wearing a mask? Why not masked or maskless? It seems like a pointless restriction.
You do realize that whether you are masked or maskless, that FaceID is still in play but with a mask it reads half your face + looks at the AW for further surety to unlock. If you're maskless, then FaceID works 100% like it always has, without an AW. Right?

Feature arrives 1 year after the pandemic started, 1 month before it ends. Nice timing.

1. It works perfectly while wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet. This is a great feature for those of us who ride.
2. I have traveled to Japan an average of 6 times a year for 20 years before the pandemic. Once travel there resumes again, they will surely be using masks in public into the foreseeable future- their use has always been widespread anyway, during pollen season or when a person has a cold.
3. See Europe, above.
