Great, but it won’t unlock any apps that require Face ID (eg 1Password)…. so that’s pretty lame.
1Password is pretty lame, they won't allow Apple Watch to unlock vault on Mac without Secure Enclave, and still you can unlock your Mac and your Keychain using Apple Watch (on Apple computers without Secure Enclave). I don't believe Apple has lower security standards then 1Password.

If you already have an Apple Watch and it’s with you at the grocery store while wearing a mask, why not just use the Apple Pay on your Watch…? I don’t get what the problem is with all of these people crying that it doesn’t work with Apple Pay. You have Apple Pay setup on your phone, but not your watch? What is the logic behind that? The security risk of authenticating Apple Pay on the phone this way is far greater than whatever “inconvenience” you people might be feeling. Setup Apple Pay on your Watch! That’s what it’s there for! Double clicking the side button is much faster than pulling out the phone anyway.
It’s weird using your watch to pay. Doesn’t feel right. Never see people doing this.

I have not been able to make that happen. For the time being I have had to continue to go into settings when I change watches, and for ease of remembering, I have adopted turning the watch I am wearing "on" and the other one "off" since I will need to toggle it off next time anyways. Leaving both on still only has one working.

i guess it's a more serious bug than i thought then... i'm sure there will be a dot release pretty soon cause this is a pretty fundamental bug.

My jailbroken 12 Pro Max on iOS 14.1, can now do the same thing even though my S4 is still on 6.2.8. I even get a haptic feel when my phone unlocks.

With the launch of iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.4, Apple introduced a feature that's designed to allow people wearing masks to unlock their iPhones with a paired and authenticated Apple Watch, alleviating the need to continually enter a passcode.

Unlock-With-Apple-Watch-Feature.jpg

Apple has published a support document outlining how the feature works and the requirements that enable it to function. Apple says that the Apple Watch unlocking process is not using Face ID to recognize and authenticate you, so the same facial scan that allows Face ID to unlock your phone isn't happening here.

There are a specific set of requirements that allow the Apple Watch to authenticate your identity for unlocking an iPhone. You'll need an iPhone X or later with iOS 14.5 or later and an Apple Watch Series 3 or later with watchOS 7.4 or later, which must be paired together.

Both WiFi and Bluetooth need to be activated for communication between the iPhone and the Apple Watch, and the Apple Watch needs to have a passcode and wrist detection must be enabled. Unlock with Apple Watch needs to be expressly turned on for it to function, and you can find the feature in Settings > Face ID & Passcode.

For the Apple Watch to authenticate your identity the watch needs to be on your wrist and unlocked, and you need to be wearing a mask that covers both the mouth and the nose, presumably to signal to the iPhone to use the secondary unlocking method rather than Face ID.

To unlock the iPhone with the Apple Watch, you need to wake your iPhone by raising it or tapping the screen, and then glance at it to unlock. The requirement to glance at the iPhone is meant to prevent the feature from working when you're not close by your iPhone, and though not mentioned by Apple, there definitely seems to also be a proximity requirement because it will tell you if you're not close enough to your phone.

This is a feature that can allow someone else that's not you to unlock your iPhone if they're near you, have your iPhone, and are wearing a mask, so enabling it should be done with caution if other people have access to your device and you're worried about security.

It's worth noting that Unlock with Apple Watch only works for unlocking the iPhone. It does not verify identity for use with Apple Pay, passwords in Keychain, or password-protected apps, which will require either Face ID or your passcode.

Though not as secure as Face ID, Unlock with Apple Watch is a convenient option for those who are tired of having to enter a passcode on their devices while wearing a mask.

I’m hoping they will also enable this on iPads with FaceID. I don’t really understand why they wouldn’t have already. Since it’s opt in anyway, I should be able to choose to have this. I can’t think of any technical reason why they don’t have this. Certainly no more risky than allowing one’s computer to be unlocked with Watch.

We don’t have a calculator app on the iPad “pro” and you expect them to bring this over?

Old article but this new information is relevant:

iOS 15 broke Require attention for Face ID when using Unlock with Apple Watch

iPhone XS Max and AW Series 6 owner here.

I have been using Unlock with Apple Watch since its inception and have loved it, but something has changed since the update to iOS 15 and watchOS 8.

There is a Face ID feature that I consider very important to keep my iPhone secured: Require attention for Face ID. Without this I'd never feel safe using Face ID to unlock my iPhone. It is simple: Someone can easily take my iPhone while I am asleep, point it to my face and unlock it without me ever noticing it.

While using Unlock with Apple Watch on iOS 14 / watchOS 7, my iPhone was never unlocked without me looking directly at the screen. After the update to iOS 15 / watchOS 8 I started noticing a high number of alerts on my Apple Watch about my iPhone been unlocked by it when I was not doing this myself. I discovered that the iPhone was getting unintentionally unlocked by just getting an accidental glance of my face while i was holding it in my hand. This never happened before the OS update.

I decided to conduct an experiment: I closed my eyes and tried to unlock my iPhone while my watch was on my wrist, the iPhone effectively got unlocked without needing attention and I got the respective alert on the watch. Then I removed the watch and tried again to unlock the iPhone with my eyes closed, this time the iPhone didn't got unlocked, which is the expected behavior when you have Require attention for Face ID enabled.

I can only conclude that one of the OS updates has broke something, and now Require attention for Face ID isn't been used in conjunction with Unlock with Apple Watch.

I am going to have to turn off this until Apple fix what they have broken.

I have already sent feedback to Apple about this. Try it yourselves and if you can reproduce the issue please send feedback to Apple too using https://www.apple.com/feedback/
