So basically, "well you really just shouldn't use them." If I had AirPods Pro, might as well go with these if they're still physically compatible. Maybe someone should test if there's a difference, but I'd bet it's so minor only a hardcore audiophile could pick up on it.
Yeah, could be like the 1st gen Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro being totally compatible with the M1 iPad Pro, contrary to Apple’s initial statement.

Pretty much. Just a money grab. Because folks that are getting the tips for free with their new AirPo… wait, so folks that have the old tips that are working, no, they don’t have to buy anything either. No, ahhhhhh… YEAH! it’s because Apple is forcing people to buy the new AirPods if they want the new tips… that’s it! I bet you Apple won’t even make the XS tips avail…
You'll have to buy (i.e. Apple wants you to buy) the 2nd gen AirPods Pro to get them even though the XS size can be purchased on their own for your 1st gen AirPods Pro and they unofficially fit.
… I mean, they WILL make them available… for people to buyyyyy, because…

wait, give me a minute… they… they made them available separately, so that you DON’T have to buy the new AirPods Prooo…

BUT, ummm you still have to buy them! Yeah, they don’t give the tips away for free and anything not free is TOTALLY a money grab! (pats self on the back, “I knew I could do it!”)

It is good to know that the original ear tips are still compatible?
I use third party Xtra Large ear tips as even the largest Apple stock is too small for my ears.

No. You're missing it.

The 2nd gen AirPods Pro ear tips are not compatible with 1st gen AirPods Pro so if you want/need the XS size for your 1st gen AirPods Pro, sorry, you're out of luck.

The article literally says
Despite the mesh differences, the second-generation ear tips do fit the original AirPods Pro, so they are still physically compatible.

Apple today explained why the new silicone ear tips for the second-generation AirPods Pro are not officially compatible with the original AirPods Pro.

In an updated support document, Apple said the original AirPods Pro ear tips have "noticeably denser mesh" than the second-generation ear tips. Apple did not provide any additional details, but the mesh density could result in acoustical differences.

"Ear tips have been designed specifically for their AirPods Pro generation, to deliver the highest-fidelity audio experience," the support document says. "As a result, use the ear tips that come with your AirPods Pro. AirPods Pro (1st generation) ear tips have noticeably denser mesh than AirPods Pro (2nd generation) ear tips."

Despite the mesh differences, the second-generation ear tips do fit the original AirPods Pro, so they are still physically compatible.

The mesh on the original AirPods Pro ear tips

The second-generation ear tips are available in a new XS option, while the original ear tips remain available in small, medium, and large only. Both generations of ear tips are available on Apple's online store in sets of two for $7.99 in the United States.

The new AirPods Pro will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores over the next day. The first reviews of the new AirPods Pro were shared earlier today, providing a closer look at improvements to sound quality, active noise cancellation, battery life, and more. The second-generation AirPods Pro remain priced at $249.

What they need is an XL tip. I used the largest ones and they would constantly slip out. I ended up going to the foam ones you can buy on Amazon.

Apple's business model has never been about backwards compatibility. Look at all the old tech they have abandoned over the years--SCSI, Firewire, ADC (Apple Display Connector), PowerPC, Intel...the list goes on. This has allowed them the freedom to explore new ideas, try new things unfettered. It has also embittered a lot of old timers who invested heavily in some old tech.
I'm still salty over the headphone jack.😒 When Apple makes something I like, I will buy. These AirPods are no go for me.

Or think they’ve picked up on it.

Worse, the tips don’t fit the AirPods Max. Luckily, the EU will do their deed and step in to force them to make the tips compatible with the Max. (I don’t know where else to put it, so I’ll toss in the obligatory “Timmy” right here.)

To reduce consumer waste, the EU will pass a law requiring everyone to have M-sized ears. Meanwhile Brazil is issuing a lawsuit against companies including M-sized tips.

I always go for comply tips for my earphones. Comply’s website confusingly has “airpods pro v2.0” tips. I guess they need to cash in as well.

Who is seriously going to be using an old set of ear tips for a new AirPod Pro? What a strange/stupid reason to claim profit….
Folks who either lost one somehow or tore their old ones and purchased a set of 4 for the original Airpod pros. If the new ones someday get lost, torn or what ever why would anyone go out and buy a new set of 4 when I have a perfectly good set in the desk drawer? I’m sure lots of folks have extra sets of original airpod pro ear tips that wouldn’t hesitate to install them on the new Pros someday if they were needed.

Did you not read the article?

It clearly states: "Despite the mesh differences, the second-generation ear tips do fit the original AirPods Pro, so they are still physically compatible."

That sort of destroys your whole greed argument. They are just recommending for best sound quality to not swap them between generations.

You MUST know by now that there’s nothing… absolutely NOTHING that destroys a greed argument against Apple. :) Apple could give everyone on this forum 4 dollars and the response would be “APPLE HAS ENOUGH TO GIVE US ALL 5 DOLLARS! Typical money grubbing Apple, giving away less than they could have.”
