Did Apple improve the sound quality partly by shielding them less from ear wax ingress?
Literally the only reason I just replaced my AirPods 2 with AirPods Pro 1. The rubber tips have got to better than the mesh on the non pro AirPods.

So, the tips fit both generations, but are sonically different for those audiophiles using AirPods. Thanks for the heads up.

Darn, I can’t even follow the thread of this one…

Brief summary, when you buy the new AirPods Pro 2, you get the new set of earplugs with it (no upselling, no downselling or whatever)

If you need a new set of earplugs for the AirPods Pro 1 (those ones that everybody have been using for several years) you spend $8 on that to replace them (skip the Starbucks drive by and do the coffee at home that single day to cover for it).
If you want to replace the ones on your new couple of days old just recently opened AirPods Pro 2, you buy for the same Starbucks priced amount the other ear tips set (although barring a rare incident you need not, the ones that came with it must still be smelling like new).

But the threads are about “greedy apple”, planned obsolescence, you (A) read but you (B) didn’t read the article… I’m totally not following the issue here, are we just being victims of bots or something flaming and trolling the forums maybe?

You MUST know by now that there’s nothing… absolutely NOTHING that destroys a greed argument against Apple. :) Apple could give everyone on this forum 4 dollars and the response would be “APPLE HAS ENOUGH TO GIVE US ALL 5 DOLLARS! Typical money grubbing Apple, giving away less than they could have.”
Dude Apple took out the SIM card tray in us iPhones and replaced it with a piece of plastic to save Pennies. They didn’t even utilize the space they did it to save PENNIES

They were able to make Apple Watch band compatible. They could have made this compatible too. They just never expected people to stick with their Apple Watch for this long. So this is a new move to force people to upgrade. Expect more of this strategy on a lot of products. This is just a stunt to see market reaction on how far they can go. Notice lately how many S they get for doing this and all of a sudden things are possible.

They did this with a lot of other stuff like the iPhone. For example:
Improvements of camera features only available for the last gen and “last years” model. Planned obsolence iPhone “batterygate”. Stage Manager on iPad. Apple Maps Improvements only for Macbooks equipped with Apple Silicon. The economy is bad and they expect less upgrade cycles, this is their strategy. The company is now taken over by Marketing departments and fresh graduates who have no idea what made Apple big in the first place.

No. You're missing it.

The 2nd gen AirPods Pro ear tips are not compatible with 1st gen AirPods Pro so if you want/need the XS size for your 1st gen AirPods Pro, sorry, you're out of luck.

You'll have to buy (i.e. Apple wants you to buy) the 2nd gen AirPods Pro to get them even though the XS size can be purchased on their own for your 1st gen AirPods Pro and they unofficially fit.
I appreciate that.

For example: Apple Watch bands fit ALL apple watches, despite the increase on size of Apple Watches. If Apple was into planned redundancy, they'd have easily been able to do the same.

But if Apple bring out a new AirPod Max and it has different size earpads, why would I expect that they would fit the version 1?

I would suggest that the design has changed significantly enough that the small XS would simply not be able to fit the Airpod Pro (1) without at least compromising sound quality. But don’t worry. If there is a market there, someone will fill it, despite not being of the same quality.

based on what evidence? Or is this just yet another unfounded opinion/tin foil hat conspiracy?

Apple said about 3 or 4 years ago that they wanted to do this. I would suggest (not say categorically because I don’t have evidence to support it) that this is another move toward a complete water tight phone.

Other people say things are categorically the way they are without evidence like the ridiculous, unfounded comments above.

Okay, I changed my mind. I 10000% KNOW that Apple have done this to better seal the phone and it has nothing to do with cutting costs. The reality is that we are only guessing and we don’t KNOW squat! But haters will be haters I guess.

BRO you didn't read the article and then complained about someone else not reading the article are you even for real.
BRO. They won’t fit because they don’t suit them. You might be able to physically attach them, but they won’t work the same.

Because this seems a bit tricky for you to understand this. Think of this analogy.

You can probably get a case to FIT an iPhone but if it covers half the screen, then the experience is diminished and not working the way it was intended. And that has been Apples design philosophy forever!

If I’m reading this correctly that means I should drop $8 on the new ear tips for improved sound quality on my first gen APP.

But I already got third party foam ear tips that work way better than the stock ones anyway.
That’s not what Apple claims. The article states the ear tips are designed for a specific AirPods generation.

So they’re not compatible across generations in both directions. But the difference must be minimal.

I can’t hear the difference with the new personal spatial acoustics feature either.

Did the original ipods pro have an XS size tip?

I detested the Apple pos pro version one felt uncomfortable and had awful battery life, I wont be buying these either, the most expensive buds you can buy as you cant change batteries so you have to keep buying new ones when they die, well done apple, perpetual money making is your forte.

At least the original ear tips are still available. Wasn't expecting that.

I'd be curious to see if the new APP gave me ear discharge like the first generation (the only in-ears to do so).

So basically, "well you really just shouldn't use them." If I had AirPods Pro, might as well go with these if they're still physically compatible. Maybe someone should test if there's a difference, but I'd bet it's so minor only a hardcore audiophile could pick up on it.
You're forgetting that just about everyone on these forums is seemingly a hardcore audiophile.

So they planned to change an ear tip to force everyone to upgrade? Seriously?

They simply won’t fit. Because the mesh is thicker in the original. I’ve rarely heard anyone whinge about things becoming thinner…. Except in this forum. It astounds me when people draw their own conclusions without actually reading the article.
Look folks Tim Apple is posting on macrumors again..

I have sent my Airpods Pro v1 into apple 3 times for crackling due to dust ingress. They have an extended repair program for this issue. Apple gives me free 2-way FedEx overnight and free repairs even though my apple care+ is expired. I have to imagine it's related to this.
