I completely agree, i'm ready to buy if they release a new PB. I don't wanna wait another year or so! What's the general opinion on when the newest Powerbooks are going to come?

Good morning everybody! I wish you all a happy and fullfilling day of rumours, rants, wishes and dreams till the curtain unveils the magic word: Powerbook.

And then go to bed, same old same old?

In a way Apple have already quietly exited the manufacturing business, they don't make computers any more.

The way Macs are currently made is nearly the same as the cloning business in the 1990s. Apple do the design and engineering work and other companies build the hardware. At the moment, Apple have an exclusive resale arrangement for the hardware, but they have even been experimenting with ending that, most recently will the ill-timed HP iPod experiment.

As recently as yesterday, Jobs acknowledged that this is the direction the company is being taken, with remarks that the iPod line is successful as a software product, that being the reason why hardware-focused competitors are less successful. This was a repeat of the WWDC speech where "the soul of a Mac is its operating system" was the emphasis, and matches last year's remark from Jobs that "the more consumer products evolve, the more and more they look like software in boxes".

I forget where I saw it, but someone (not Apple) made the remark that "OS X is a $129 operating system with a $2000 dongle". It's deadly accurate too; marketing hype aside, none of their hardware (as in the electronics, not the pretty boxes) is even near the cutting edge.

I'm sorry if I'm behind the curve, but is the curtain still up?

Unfortunately, no.

1984 was dead on, Apple did use two huge booths and a massive ceiling hanger and three security guards to keep the new version of .Mac under wraps.

Imagine if there was new hardware there? What would they use then? A safe? An entire hall dedicated to speedbumped Powerbooks? Melbourne nightclub bouncers as security guards (ooo, too soon?)

Anyway, there's been some cool products released.

Maybe we're gonna see an impossibly small PowerBook with keyboard so small you need a pen to push the right keys.

POWERBOOK
Impossibly small.

So.. what is the current foresight on PowerBook updates now? Would there be a good chance there will be new updates before Wednesday next week?

The iPod mini promo ends on Saturday, the same day as the Expo ends, if I'm not mistaken. That day is a possibility, but I doubt it. We always have next tuesday ;).

i am waiting to buy a 17" when the new ones come out. next tuesday or early october is my best guess.

Here's what I'm going to do...

I'm aming for a new PB as well. I think I will do something like if a new upgrade is not announced at Saturday (or any other day of the Expo), I will wait until Tuesday and see if they update it. If they don't I will look into any rumors or news when an update could come. If it is next year, or perhaps in November, or if I don't get any information I will place an order for a 15" PowerBook. My friend recently bought a 12" and he is very happy.

I too have been waiting months for a feature-bumped 15in Powerbook, but if nothing comes by the weekend then I'll probably get that current-spec refurb iBook for $850. I need a portable within two weeks but there's no way I'll pay retail for the currently stagnant 15in Superdrive model.

C'mon Apple, drop prices, bump the VRAM, just do something to keep up with the times!

Next Tuesday would be nice. Early October would go. But I'm not planning to wait longer than that, I do need a portable in a readonable timeframe :)

More accurately, you could day everyone has now become realistic.

I have already leaned to be realistic with Apple. Can't be disappointed if don't expect anything in particular.

Well maybe they did not release them this week just to make sure that there was no confusion with the iPod promo. Look for New Powerbooks Next Tuesday.

Maybe if it's just a little (somewhat embarrassing?) speedbump for the PB there really isn't a need to "showcase" them at Apple Expo? Like maybe they planned for after the expo all along...and just "quietly" update them like the iBook and Mac Minis got updates...

...although I would think that a dual dual PM should get some more spotlight.
