To buy...or not to buy? Ehh, screw it. Why Apple, why!? I wanted a PB updates so badly today and what did I get - a slap in the face - .Mac...

The "big annoncement" is that they're introducing a large black sock for the Powerbook. :p

hmm for the 15 in and 17 in powerbook it says shipping with in 24 hours. that bad, good. ifk

so should i still buy my powerbook on wednesday?

That's what I'm asking, too. This newbie has never owned a laptop yet and starts grad school on the 26th. My school's bookstore said I could get away with the ipod deal as late as the 26th (they'll make it work). I'm a research queen, and after talking to all the people whose opinions I generally tend to respect, the deal is that I'm getting a Mac, not a PC laptop (plus, with plans on becoming a teacher, most schools around here use Apples, including in my current tech classes).

So here I am at the end of the line, after researching enough to know that WERE THERE TO BE NO IMMEDIATE UPGRADES, I'd get the PB 1.67 15," and then THIS. WTF? How long do I wait now? A day is easy enough. But if something *might* happen in October then I wonder if I should wait for two or three more weeks before giving up (though I'd lose the ipod).

Any feedback?

p.s. - thanks to those who helped me out earlier - when i asked about Intel hardware to come (and whether our older models would still be useful after that)...

here in boston we prefer red sox anyway. :p

i'm a little disappointed. the paris expo is a big event. since they have nothing else to present, why didn't they release the ipod nano there? introducing something cool like the ipod nano would help a lot in europe. ipod's (and apple for that matter) are not nearly as famous over there as they are in the us.

well i still hope there will be a powermac update soon. its close to 5 month now and they usually update them after 6 month. dual core chips are available. pc's are getting faster than powermacs. new high end graphics cards are on the market. bluetooth 2 and ble ray are there. a new wifi standard (N) is coming. so there are enough reasons to update.

For those of you wondering if you should still buy a PowerBook this week:

In my opinion, just wait a week or two. Rumors are saying it's possible we will see revisions in the coming weeks. You don't want to buy a PB and find out a few days later that Apple unvelieved a new and better model, do you? As much as it hurts, be patient. That's how I am being with the PM G5. :p

Old Steve looks rather funny on this photo (taken at the event):

can't agree more. most people don't have a true "need" for a powerbook right now, such as myself. the ones that do will buy now like they should.

waiting sucks, but in the end, it should be worth it.

Isn't that just feasible to pure macmanians? I mean the average joe doesn't give a crap since he just fancies the shapes and stuff. I'm happy with what I've got :)

I don't think we'll see Apple unveiling an upgraded Mac line at a special event until the upgrade is an Intel processor. Minor speed bumps, bigger hdd's, better GPU's, and dual layer DVD drives are not worthy of a keynote, when the processor family is already in the rearview mirror.

So the big thing was .Mac. You know what this means.

"New Powerbooks Next Tuesday!!!"
"New PowerMacs Next Tuesday!!!"

I've been following this thread with interest because this past Sunday I ordered a new 15" Powerbook. (However, in my case I do need a new computer as soon as possible because my Toshiba laptop running Linux broke the other day). I was excited that something new might come out but also disappointed because my custom computer was already being built. However, when I called Apple and was directed to sales, the Apple guy assured me that they would not build me an old computer. Anyway, the Powerbook is not supposed to ship until 9/29 so maybe an upgrade will occur by then. If I get the "old" Powerbook after an upgrade do you think I will be able to send it back if I don't even open the box? I spent a ton of money on this hoping to get the current top-of-the-line Powerbook and I don't want to get screwed.

Thanks,
Scott

over a week to custom build a machine?

it's posts like these that still give me the feeling an update is right around the corner.

Shipping dates are usually about 5-7 business days for custom machines. So the 29th is right on track. They usually don't take that long, but it just helps to leave some extra time in case they get swamped with orders or run out of a particular part. If you're looking at a PowerBook now and you were prepared to buy today, just buy it. There's not going to be anything noteworthy for a while.

Just a thought...

Apple will be opening three stores in the US on 24th September: Florida, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. As we all know, the final day of Apple Expo is also on the 24th. In addition, the free iPod with a Mac promotion ends on the 24th in the US.

There seems to be something special about this date. Apple may just have a suprise for us on saturday?!

It is possible that Apple (Steve) could officially open all of these stores simultaneously from the Expo, live via iChat linked to big screens outside the stores. At the same time, we could possibly see new hardware anouncements which would be available for customers to buy off the shelf in the new stores. Apple did this when launching their store in Birmingham, England. The opening coincided with the release of Tiger ready to buy in store.

Is this overly ambitous: Yes
Am I living in a dreamworld: You decide
Is this likely to happen: Probably not, but we can all wish!

Forgive me for dreaming, but you can never say never when it comes to Apple. Lets just hope my prediction shows at least some form of upgrade on the 24th. I think it would be a great time to do it! :D

This seems like a really thoughtful idea. Perhaps its too big of a showing for what may be realitively small updates, but it seems plausible.

Also, I feel its a given that we'll see a PB update between today and next Tues. My dream would be dual-core, but I working to quell that desire because I know I'll be let down. However, I bet there is going to be something unique added.

My guess is some sort of built-in camera or biometric security device. Any other ideas?

we're all suckers. no new powerbooks until next Jan. Wait a few days, and go on maccentral where apple's vp of product dev will declare, as he did last year, that the current PB/iBook line will remain so through the holiday season.

Is this deja vu, or ?

Last year, this year, same scenario. After April '04's update, we all thought a minor bump would occur sometime in Paris, it didn't...then there were speculations on an October bump. Nope. Then Nov. Nope. Didn't happen until Jan 31, '05! Ludicrous. As will be waiting this time around.
