There's not enough content on the service to justify the cost at the moment. I expect this will be extended again. They should extend until the end of 2021.

Really regretting cancelling my free trial about 2 weeks early back in November. Missed these two extension periods.

Says who? Maybe you haven't heard about the following shows:

Queen's Gambit
The Crown
Stranger Things
Bridgerton
Cobra Kai

These are shows that are considered both excellent quality and are part of the pop culture narrative. I participate in a forum dedicated talking about TV series and I can assure you that there are way more Netflix shows being discussed than there are Apple TV+.

Yes, there are a ton of shows on Netflix. Some are crap and some are good. But here is the thing, what one person thinks is crap, another may have enjoyed. I like being able to have a variety of shows.
Those are all good shows, but that wasn’t my point. My point is that I almost didn’t try them because so many other Netflix originals are terrible. With AT+ I might not like a show but I don’t think it’s bad, simply not for me. With Netflix a lot of it is just bad. Gems you listed, excluded.

The shows are all really good, they just don't have enough of them.
Agree. For a streaming service this young, people are assuming it’s going to be as robust as Netflix or Amazon. Keeping in mind many of the shows on those services were picked up as they were cancelled (The Expanse was axed by SyFy which still amazes me as it’s a great show). Apple is still inking deals and contracts. I’m surprised they have the content they do now given the short time frame - it usually takes years to establish production, sets, writers, producers, location scouts, studios, then negotiations with directors and actors which can be ridiculously complex (don’t get me started on inclusion riders). Apple already has award winning original series. That’s impressive for a company that has never been in the entertainment industry as a content provider company.

I’m betting Apple is doing just fine especially with the plethora of newly inked deals. Covid-19 has stalled everyone as production on countless movies and series has been pushed back at least a year. Apple has set deals with experienced industry moguls - they didn’t have a backlog of decades of content like Disney+ to market on. They’re doing everything by scratch.

Thank you for your contribution - duly noted.
You're very welcome. Anytime I can bring knowledge and joy to your world, I am more than happy to do so. Perhaps you should consider following my Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Tinder, XBox GT, PSN Tag, and Crocheting Member Profile. Insights abound.

And I already have upgraded to Apple One. I have not gotten any $5 credit that I know of, but I guess I will have to go through my iTunes receipts and see what actually got billed.

Sheesh. Just make it free on the newest generation of Apple hardware and $5 a month on non-Apple hardware and older hardware. Require hardware upgrades to keep the service 'free'.
I just came in here to suggest this. I buy a new iPhone every year, or some sort of new Apple product, and it wouldn’t hurt to at least base this on new revenue for continued free TV+.

Apple TV+ loses points for not being available on Windows or other major platforms.

It loses even more points for the quality of content. Not enough for families. Not enough classic content. Nothing that pushes the envelope in terms of storytelling. It's almost as if the content was written by a committee.
This is a good observation. I've watched a few of the shows (or at least a few episodes), and it's like they sat a group of people down for each show and asked them to throw out tropes for the genre and then just adlibbed in the rest.

For example, for Mythic Quest, it was like they had a one-hour brainstorming session and the takeaway was "make a show that tries to appeal to nerds, like Silicon Valley, but throw in some random gaming stuff." The dialogue was cringey, the storytelling was predictable and boring, the jokes seemed super forced, etc.

I really like the service! The content is refreshing, creative, and the originals are a nice addition to other streaming services. I was actually considering switching to an Apple One plan to keep TV+...but now I may delay on that.

Allegedly, TV+ is included with the student subscription to Music (which I have). Does anyone know if the TV+ free trial is cancelled, will Apple reconnect it based on the student Music subscription?

A worrying sign that the service is not performing well ... or that they are hoping people will forget when the service actually ends so that there are renewals
I think it’s more to do with covid changing all their plans. They propably had very well thought plan to hook people by offering all the time something new, so you just don’t want to end it. The service is now stagnant because new films and movies are really hard to make in current situation. That’s why Apple is giving more time because they try to get into that plan they made for the device.

I cancelled my subscription today just before i read this extended period. But i did it because my brother have free atv+ too and i found out that i can use it with family share, so no problem with that :)

It will remain FREE for years to come.

Apple got into a market it had NO chance of succeeding in !

Apple just needs to string-along Munster, Ives, Huberty, & Cramer, for them to continue to sing their "AAPL Cheerleader" song !

In doing so, they get the Price-Expansion without having to deliver.

Which "may" have been their strategy ALL-along.

The last episode of See (season 1) was the best thing I saw on AppleTV+.

The Tom Hanks movie was good, & it told a story that was long-overdue; few discussed the number at the end of the movie, 72,200, if memory serves me.

Really wondering what is going on?
there have been plenty stories on MR for new shows, so there should be original content.
Did covid get in the way to have even more content?
Me personally, I don’t care much for the content as it is today and will cancel it when free is over... I would prefer older content, but that’s just me

I am not sure how much it would eat into profitability but if they offered 1 free itunes rental a month until they had a worthwhile back catalog, they could justify charging $5 for it, but as it is with only 20-30 or so show and movies (even with a few getting 2nd seasons) its not worth an ongoing subscription, IMO. Definitely a sub one month to binge and cancel, but not ongoing.

Every other service has a back catalog they can offer, Apple only has what they produce (they did acquire the rights to the Peanuts specials which was nice). I've actually prefered their original content compared to Disney+ so far. Does Dsiney have anything yet aside from the Mandalorian? All their Marvel stuff got delayed, I think its finally starting to come now. With any service, once I've watched what I want to watch, there is nothing to keep me subbed. Except Disney has a crazy back catalog, most of which isn't available digitally. Most other services have a passable variety but Apple doesn't. Giving a rental credit would certainly help that.
