I have the 2011 17in mbp. I have no visible display issues other than my monitor will not wake from sleep without me unplugging the thunderbolt cable and replugging it in. I have reset the pram which works for maybe 24 hours and then its back to having to unplug and replug. Should I take it in under this program? Seems like it isn't sending a video signal upon wake. Thanks!

But you have noticed the problem?
I though i had - intermittent dropouts to the external Cinema Display (about q second). Video only - sound etc continues. Eventually a scrambled screen on the external monitor.

However Apple have tested it and it passed all their tests, so no free repair for me . Can't reproduce the issue on the built-in screen.

I just dropped off my 2012 rMBP i7 with 16gb RAM... Repair due to the problem. Any chance I get a new machine? Or... More likely I just get a new crap logic board with the same problem?

If the problem was a fried logic board due caused by an overheating GPU, then yeah. The overheating issue is due to the lead-free solder. Apple had to switch to lead-free solder back in 2011 due to regulations created by the EPA and the EU. It also doesn’t help that the Retina MacBook Pro is thinner than the old-fashioned MacBook Pros, as well as Apple switching to AMD GPUs.

The problem with the lead-free solder is that when it heats up enough to melt a little, little spikes form. Each successive partial melt causes those spikes to expand, until they hit another line of solder and short out the logic board.

I guess I'm just holding out a slight bit of hope that because my laptop is 4 years old, maybe they won't have extra logic boards laying around for it... Probably wishful thinking.

If I were you, I'd make sure steer clear of MacBook Pros that have built-in GPUs. Due to the lead-free solder, the only way to use a GPU with a MacBook Pro(without the GPU frying the Logic Board) is to use an eGPU, so all of the heat generated by the GPU is kept away from the MacBook Pro. You have to modify some kext files to make the eGPU work in OS X, but GoalQue's automate-eGPU script makes it easy.

After I have them replace mine 3 times I'll say to them that the replacements are obviously defective and ask for a new model.

Well, apparently they couldn't fix it in the store. I'm guessing they just didn't have any 2012 motherboards lying around. They're sending it off to the depot. I'm holding out hope that they won't have any replacements there either and that I'll get a new computer, but I'm assuming the likelihood of that is about nill... but... a guy can dream!

How good is third party software in keeping the logic board cool enough to last a few more years?

My 2011 mbp video went crazy today after almost 5 years of ownership. How long does the repair take?
It depends on where you take it. I took mine to an authorised derive centre. I collected it the day after Apple shipped them the logic board.

Took it in and repair is being made for free. One thing that surprised me was that if it wasn't covered, the repair would have only been $300. I would have expected more for a new logic board.

I have my 2011 17in mbp back and it is working so much better. Very thankful for the repair.

Can anyone educate me on the quality of the new board put in? Will I likely have the same problem come up again in a year or two? Thanks for the help.

I had video issues at first and then my early 2011 15 inch Antiglare MBP stopped booting up.

I took it in for repair last year ( the store charged me, but I got the fee refunded using their 1-800 number). It is has worked flawlessly since then. I had installed an SSD in the optical disk slot that I had to remove before they sent it off for repairs. However, I just popped it back in when I got the machine back a few days later.

The overheating issue is caused by lead-free solder, which Apple is still using due to mandates from the EPA and the EU. So, yeah, you'll have the same problem in a year or two. You might want to get a laptop cooling pad for when the CPU and GPU are working hard.

That is interesting that you say that. I am shocked by how much cooler this laptop is now. The fans hardly run at all. Laptop used to be hot to the touch after 30 minutes. Cool all day now.

Maybe they improved the cooling system.

had this issue a while back before recall. they wanted me pay for logic board, i refused. referenced breakfix.cc and argued that this doesnt make sense. i had 2011 i think

Had my logic board and top clamshell replaced completely for free under this program. Over £700 worth of repairs! Good guy Apple.
[doublepost=1478158554][/doublepost]Is Logic board included on the program?. I have my MBP 15" mid 2012 brought to an Apple Service Center. My unit has all the issue the program stated. At first they won't acknowledge the program and afterwards and known about the program (googled probably). They said mid2012 not in included that I have to show them the apple website that mid 2012 was in fact inlcuded. They ran diagnostics.. They said I have a defective logic board. And ONLY video card was under the program. I paid the center (2,500 php) if they can at least format my unit and ran more diagnosis. 1 after a week of no contact. I went back to the center. Found out the the logic board still needs replacement for 33,000 PHp. My unit is not even formatted. Looked like they did not even bother diagnosing my unit and straight away replace the logic board. Can I deal with a non Philippine Service Center to fix te issue?
