i don't know that. The Mac expert there told me it's separate from the mobo

Nope, fat jez is right. The CPU & GPU and all that is on the logic board, so if you take it in for service, the entire logic board will be replaced. Your expert is definitely not knowledgeable about this :)

Please advise how to go on with this. Clearly my MBP is under this replacement program. Mac Service center keeps on insisting it's only video card that is covered not the Mobo. They insist I should pay for logic board replacement.

Direct them to the support pages at Apple. https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

But frankly, if they don't understand something as basic as the graphics chip is part of the logic board, they should not be working on Macbooks! Ask them to point out where the separate board with the graphics chip on it is and how they propose to replace it without changing the logic board? I think they are trying to sting you for money, personally.

i tried showing the apple program site to them. They tried denying it. They pretty look stupid at that point.Sooo hard to argue with them. They don't really care much since it out of warranty. Heard that if repaired it will eventually fail easily down the road. Never happened to me on pc :) thanks for the replies. I may need someone on Apple's higher ups to help me..Just like Ph politics. What a drag..

I think you got a bad Apple Store/service rep. They do exist. I would avoid giving them any money at this point and either try again at some other Apple Store or contact Apple directly. Your MacBook Pro is covered under the warranty, they should have replaced the Logic Board (motherboard) straight up, free of charge and it shouldn't have taken any longer than a week - depending on how busy they are. The guy who did mine called me the same day telling me he'd finished the job, and replaced the clamshell too.

Bad Apple Stores do exist, and sometimes you're unlucky enough to end up talking to someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

So I think my early 2011 MBP is on round two of this problem. Is it safe to assume that there is no true resolution - just something that will reoccur again and again over time? I had it fixed once maybe 2 years ago, and now I've got similar problems. Will they repair it twice since they extended the program?

They'll repair it again, but be quick as the program ends soon. I'm on my third logic board in mine.

I dropped mine off at the Apple Store yesterday. Initial testing didn't reveal a problem, but they're going to do more in depth testing.

Anyone know a way to speed up the GPU death? I got my logic board replaced a couple months ago and it's working for now. But we all know it's only a matter of time before the problem happens again. I want to try to get the problem to happen again so I can get my logic board replaced one more time before the Dec 31 deadline.

Maybe run a GPU benchmark 24 hours a day for several days?

Have mine for LB replacement under this program. Need to be approved by Apple US first, since Manila Apple Service Center refused to acknowledge the program. No pickup date yet.
[doublepost=1481255112][/doublepost]Any idea if new MBP's stable?

I just took my MacBook Pro Retina 2012 in, they tested it for 5 minutes and confirmed it was displaying the issues under the program. The Genius guy said 'replace logic board' a bunch of times, confirmed that the replacement/repair had a 2 year warranty, so even when the program ends for me in March (4 years from purchase) if its the same issue and within 2 years of repair I can get it replaced for free.

The issue I have is the work authorisation email they sent me, states the repair is a ' Replace Display Assembly and cover costs at POS. Unit is within 4 years from purchase date. ', which doesn't sound at all like the logic board and what the program covers.

I'm hoping the technician who does the repair notices its the usual issue and replaces the logic board. They asked for my Mac user password, so they expect to get in and do testing and whatnot.

Other notes from work authorisation: 'Steps to Reproduce: Mac Resource Inspector Diagnostic run - no issues found
Video Systems Test run - failed'.

I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't change the logic board, given the last line of your work authorisation email.

I was lucky. My beloved 17" MBP started to have problems 2 days before Christmas. Brought it to Apple and after a quick Diagnosis same issue: Graphic Test failed.

I was told that the whole logic board will be replaced and I didn't have to pay anything. 3 days later on the first day of Christmas I had my laptop back.

Good service, I have to admit.

Had mine serviced last November 2016. Under apple warranty after so much proof calls to apple US. I went onsite for the 2nd time in PowerMac manila to check if my unit is now available for pickup/ checked online also. Since their phones are useless. That's what i thought, My 16GB MacPro is now 8GB. The representative gave me a shot that it's only natural etc etc she only shuts up when I showed her my previous screenshot that it was really 16GB before. I also noticed that the video card testing has a warning icon. Then she said it's normal. I said it's unacceptable that its now 8GB. She then talked to her colleagues offline and went back at me saying. " I'm afraid I cannot release your unit since it's 8GB and not 16GB as before. She needs additional 7 days for the replacement" I told her it took them 7 weeks just to replace the LB. Not to mention the long cue for their service. Keeping my fingers crossed now.

An update: Apple technician noticed what the issue was an replaced the logic board instead of the display assembly. My data was cloned to the new board, so up and running straight away. Logic board cost (in Australian Dollars) was $700 + $100 labour, display assembly was $900 + $100. No charge to me though of course.

Contacting Apple now to confirm the repair was a 2 year warranty itself, as the genius and online tech pre-repair said it would.

How is that possible? I also got LB replaced 3 weeks ago and they told me i have 3 month warranty on LB.

I was told by the Genius and someone on phone support, both based in Australia. The online support seems to be based in the US or somewhere other than Australia.

On contacting the online support, they stated 'Apple has a 90 day warranty on repairs worldwide, even Australia', and I basically responded that 'yeah you also say 1 year warranty for all Apple products, but Australian consumer law makes the warranty last for as long as reasonably expected of the product. For a MacBook Pro you could easily argue 4 years at a minimum." The online chat doesn't seem to know too much other than linking to support articles from Google.

90 days on repairs is terrible, especially with the more expensive and 'pro' items. Even more so with a repair program where they have achknowledged they stuffed up.

I would argue in this circumstance, if you are in Australia or a country with good consumer rights, that 2 years is the minimum this repair should last for. If something else other than logic board dies, my laptop will be over 4 years old and that'll be fair enough.

same here! I've tried time and time again to get my rMBP 2012 GPU replaced under this program, but every time they test it, it doesnt fail the GPU test. Get logic board replaced, told 3 month warranty on new logic board. 6 months later, do a ton of 3D rendering, everything overheats, now having GPU issues again, and no warranty on logic board. Cycle continues.....

So they do the VST test in front of you and it doesn't fail? How many times do you try before paying? I've heard some people have to get Apple to try the VST test more than once before it pops up failed.

Correct, it doesn't fail. I have screenshots of glitchy artifacts, every time i put the machine under GPU / CPU stress it freezes, but unfortunately it doesn't fail the GPU test, so it comes up with a logic board error, and that gets replaced.

I think the last time the technician ran it twice, and tried to stress it out another way, but it just gets a kernel panic / logic board error.

Luckily in the USA there is a blanket repair program for like $350 or something they will replace everything that is wrong with the system. So last time i had the display screen, IO controller etc etc as well as logic board replaced for $350.
Problem is, it's faulty again, i'm pretty sure i know why, but i can't prove it.

I've read elsewhere a while ago that the "logic board" failure is systematic of this issue as well, but hard to get anyone to acknowledge it.

I am actually Australian, currently living in the US, so i wonder if i had the part replaced in the US, whether i could walk into an apple store in australia and claim a repair warranty of 2 years?! No idea.

I thought with these highly integrated rMBPs that the logic board is basically the entire computer? Isn't the GPU/CPU/Memory/Storage all soldered on?

It seems like other countries are a little hesitant to put laptops under the program, the genius I saw listened to me speak for like 30 seconds before attempting the VST test (and it passed). Very easy process.

But, for $350 and having everything you need replaced, thats a fantastic deal. I wish I could access a program like that here.

Apples repairs are covered worldwide, so you could definitely come back to Australia and argue things more easily :p
