That is really the issue. I was excited about Ping because I was delusional. Here I thought that it would be capable of promoting music that was not yet on iTunes. I mean, isn't that what this should really be about? We don't need to promote an overly popular, under-talented artist like Justin Bieber ...

How would you suppose an iTunes social network would be primarily used to support music that is not in iTunes. That does not really make much sense.

Unfortunately, without Facebook, finding your friends is cumbersome. Does Steve Jobs really expect many people to type one email address at time and search for friends? And as far as I can tell from the initial download of iTunes 10, there's only a handful of bands who have signed on to Ping. I spent 30 minutes searching for different bands I like, and the only one that came up was U2.

I think Facebook actually has quite a bit of leverage here

Assuming you are an artist, I think you have the wrong attitude concerning these social networks. I would think you would want to reach out through all venues. Nothing says you have to choose one over the other.

I use facebook but only occasionally. I see it as a place to locate old friends if you lose contact info. And perhaps once a month I take a look at what people are up to. Ping I did not plan to use much either but I do enjoy going to concerts. I figured Ping would be an extension to itunes store offering more information such as concert dates and meaningful updates from the artists. (Not twitter style pointless updates about buying new shoes).

I really do not understand why you, as an artist, would think you need to choose facebook over ping (or twitter or myspace, etc.). In pings case, since its within the application from which people buy music, I would think you would especially want that. Less time between viewing your material and purchasing means less time to second guess a purchase.

As I said in another post, I think Apple only needs to convince major artists to set up their pages in ping and all will fall into place with facebook cooperation. Established artists make more money with concert tickets than music sales so I imagine they will come on board.

At this moment Ping isn't a social network !!!!! You simply can't make your own artist page... Ping would be interesting if this is the case. But now it's an empty box.

"All Things Digital now follows up with a report claiming that the disappearance is due to Apple's unauthorized usage..."

I love it. Apple goes after Psystar....but then does the exact same thing!

It does remind me of several rounds of Apple's disabling iTunes syncing with the Palm Pre and Palm re-enabling it again...

have you been on another planet?

Apple going after people using their software illegally.....but then they go ahead and do a similar thing.:D

They should send around the cops and arrest steve....

Oh wait this isn't criminal law which is what the term illegal mostly refers to, it's torte law (which they say you can have your cake and eat it to. gotta love the french).

If Apple had applied some sort of workaround to Facebooks locks on API overuse then we would be in the same ball park as Pystar. Which might have been illegal in the sense that there was possible fraud involved.

Apple have taken a punt and got shutdown. It's a more like an App Developer using an unauthorised API in an appstore submission hoping it might become authorised in the process or that they'll get to negotiate it's use. Not a smart tactic but not an illegal one in any sense.
