That would require the fanboys and girls to accept apple is doing wrong.

iTunes ping would access facebook well over the 100 mil call/day limit. Since it is getting that high it requires a special agreement. One apple is clearly not willing to play ball in. To me this just tell me it is type Apple arrogates. The fanboys and girls will blame facebook and not bother looking at the facts.

So let me get this strait...

Apple: We want data.
Facebook: Um... No.
Apple: We doing it anyway.

This is not funny.

I sometimes think we'd be much better off on Internet discussion forums if we could just ban the word "evil." This has nothing to do with either of these companies being evil although I see the usual lot hasn't hesitated in making that claim. It has everything to do with the fact that these two companies have very different business models that aren't going to mesh easily.

Apple makes most of its money off sales of actual things, tangible gadgets, and uses services and data to that end (for example, they make little off iTunes when compared to iPod and iPhone sales.) Facebook makes money off intangible assets like user information and whatnot to sell advertising.

To Apple, Facebook's assets (user accounts and their info) is of little inherent value except where it may create a feature that can sell more hardware. To Facebook, Apple's hardware is completely irrelevant and their attempt to integrate Facebook into Ping is likely seen as the start of a turf war, although trying to upend Facebook is clearly not Apple's goal.

Why aren't there more people like you on this forum? It's ether so-and-so company is evil or [insert product here] copied Apple. Who gives a flying ****?

Apple needs to focus on getting artists on board with ping instead of fighting with facebook. Faceook will come around if the artists show up.

And Apple already sells the artist's music so you would think it wouldn't take much arm twisting on Apple's part.

Facebook stands to have millions of interactions but would control none of it once Apple got into FBs address book. FB might want a piece of that action in term$ and agreement$.

Still, Apple has the 160M addresses now and FB being API blocked, may slow FB's inroads allowing Apple/Ping to capitalize.

The true measure is how many artists use this new tech and how many simply avoide iTunes in favor of CD-only distribuiton. (John Cougar Melloncamp, Beatles, Jethro Tull).

I will never buy a cd again and I feel that many people feel the same way. These bands going for cd only distribution are removing themselves from a large demographic. Although The Beatles: Rock Band has DLC, so Yoko Ono should get her head out of her arse!

Ping will kill FaceBook

Recently I've noticed that new friends in FaceBook...there is nothing to say. TO be able to use music as a relive the old days, and introduce people to new music is very powerful.

Earlier today, we reported on confusion surrounding the brief appearance of Facebook Connect functionality in iTunes 10's "Ping" social networking feature that initially appeared to allow users to find friends by checking their Facebook contacts. The feature quickly disappeared from Ping without explanation from Apple.

All Things Digital now follows up with a report claiming that the disappearance is due to Apple's unauthorized usage of the Facebook Connect application programming interfaces (APIs) after the two companies failed to reach a deal regarding access. With the two companies were unable to reach a deal over Ping's access to the APIs, Apple apparently deployed the functionality anyway, but it was quickly blocked by Facebook for violation of its terms of service. Apple then removed the non-functioning feature entirely.

According to the report, Facebook and Apple remain in discussions about bringing Facebook Connect connectivity to Ping, so it may make a reappearance at some point in the future.

Ping is a joke

There are only 14 bands with U2 and Linkin Park twice !!! Ridiculous...
This is a walled community and isn't a social network at all !!!

And this was Apple's biggest news of the special music event, pffft what a bunch of amateurs

So I'll keep promoting my music via Facebook artist pages

That is really the issue. I was excited about Ping because I was delusional. Here I thought that it would be capable of promoting music that was not yet on iTunes. I mean, isn't that what this should really be about? We don't need to promote an overly popular, under-talented artist like Justin Bieber ...

The only thing this may be good for is concert updates. There was an artist that I love (Kate Voegel) who recently came to Raleigh to perform in a mall. I would have wanted to see that even though it would have been a crowded nightmare. Unfortunately with all the other craptastic features Ping brought, I won't likely use it. I'll stick to finding new music through the older and less Apple-esque ways.

Hope it gets the import option for the contacts... In all honesty I am not going to go through and manually enter each friend... So unless they add some form of easy import I know I wont use ping. And while I am ranting quit suggesting Lady Gaga I don't even own a song by her why would I want to follow her on Ping?

Assuming you are an artist, I think you have the wrong attitude concerning these social networks. I would think you would want to reach out through all venues. Nothing says you have to choose one over the other.

I use facebook but only occasionally. I see it as a place to locate old friends if you lose contact info. And perhaps once a month I take a look at what people are up to. Ping I did not plan to use much either but I do enjoy going to concerts. I figured Ping would be an extension to itunes store offering more information such as concert dates and meaningful updates from the artists. (Not twitter style pointless updates about buying new shoes).

I really do not understand why you, as an artist, would think you need to choose facebook over ping (or twitter or myspace, etc.). In pings case, since its within the application from which people buy music, I would think you would especially want that. Less time between viewing your material and purchasing means less time to second guess a purchase.

As I said in another post, I think Apple only needs to convince major artists to set up their pages in ping and all will fall into place with facebook cooperation. Established artists make more money with concert tickets than music sales so I imagine they will come on board.

I usually buy CD's and import them. My itunes purchases are a replacement for "singles" I might have purchased back in the day; songs from artists I have no interest in buying an entire album. But I agree that bands should offer their music for download too.
