Yeah, and the kid probably disabled the volume safety settings and enabled max volume.... and had his AidPods turned ALL the way up.

Karen momma saw $$$
Or you could read the article fully before coming to Apple's defense? -
"The child, identified as B.G. in the filing, was watching a movie on Netflix on his iPhone in 2020 while wearing AirPods Pro. The ‌AirPods Pro‌ were allegedly set at a low volume, but an Amber Alert sounded without warning and the high-pitched noise damaged B.G.'s eardrums."

Do amber alerts even play through your AirPods? I wear them quite often and they usually play through my phone's speaker.
Yes, yes they do. I’ve had them turned off on my iPhone since one blasted me out while I was riding my bike and I about crashed into traffic because it scared the C out of me. I don’t mind alerts, but that tone is horrendous and it always jumps to max levels.

Actually, I find any notification audio signal on the headphones / earbuds too loud when playing music. Same when I'm on the phone. I can disable all notifications when the phone app is active (custom Focus mode), but I'd rather like to set a lower audio notifications level for headphones and/or while specific apps when they are (really) active.

this is what happens when society allows children to walk around with this crap in their ears all day and night. Pathetic how tuned out society is. Kids don't pay attention in parking lots on their phones, ear buds in..no situational awareness at all.
What does that have to do with a kid watching a movie at home?

What ever happened to personal responsibility? The kid probably had the volume turned way up. And should have turned amber alerts off. Guess they see the dollar signs though which overrides all that. Thats the litigious society we live in now.
Whatever happened to manufacturer responsibility? Under no circumstances should the earbuds be able to produce a sound that can damage the ears. There is simply no reason for them to be able to do it. We do not know what exactly happened but arguing that safety should be guaranteed solely by responsible behavior is just stupid. The expectation is that the product manufacturers should take reasonable precautions to make their product safe.

I have a pair of Sony xm4, STWM 2 and STWM3 and some gaming wireless headset and they all do it go to max volume or very loud when nothing is been played. The only time the alerts works is

1. When your playing audio the alerts seem to be a sensible level

2. If you have the Mute switch on all the time and don’t get alert sounds.

There’s been a few times these alerts have nearly killed my ears and I thought it was the headsets fault but 4 different pairs all do the same wireless. Apple needs to sort this

As someone who is incredibly careful with my hearing because of having tinnitus caused by loud noises, my heart really goes out to that kid. That sucks. Something has got to be done about these amber alerts that override the system volume to play at max. I didn’t even know that the sound played at max through headphones. YIKES. I hope this lawsuit spurs some action before anyone else’s ears are hurt.
One of the things I thought was interesting was the alert overriding Netflix playback that was running during this incidence. Does that happen always on a iPhone?

I think the more important issue is what is a 12 year old child doing with a pair of Airpod Pros. He is obviously too spoiled and will never learn the real value of money. He should have been given a pair of regular Airpods... no, he should have been given a pair of old Apple wired EarPods attached to the phone by a dongle... no, he should have been given a couple of cans tied together with string and told to go outside and climb a tree with a clip round the ear... which would probably have ruptured his eardrum... damn I think I have just discovered the flaw in my plan.

This must be a US / North America thing (or at least not a UK thing) cos I've not got a clue what amber alerts are and I can't find any setting on my iPhone for anything like this. Neither my phone nor my APP's have ever done anything like this.

Settings > Notifications > Scroll to bottom of page. I'm assuming that Extreme Alerts and Severe Alerts (in the UK) are probably government-related rather than missing-child related.

Ah right, yes found them. Can confirm we have never had anything at all like that go off in my part of the UK.

Agreed. Funny how people don't like the simple fact you quoted a scientific/medical fact. It isn't even your personal claim or opinion. Maybe they're disliking the fact, not your post. Yeah ... that's it.
The fact is, the difference between a child and adult is huge….. yes, that’s totally it 🙄

This makes me so sad. For the child and their future, and for who knows how many other children’s lives and futures could be at stake due to people turning off Amber alerts because of this.

As a parent I feel a personal duty to keep those alerts on. But as a professional in the music and audio industry, I just felt the need to turn off those three government alerts. My hearing is my family’s livelihood and my own children’s future.

At 12 years old did he not instantly whip them out his ears or did he just sit there with this siren going off down his lugholes thinking maybe I'll just sit here til my ear drums pop. Bizarrely it would seem to be the latter. You could almost say it's probably best he got this little learning experience over-with before going clubbing in his teens and his 'rents sue the venue for letting him stand too close to the 120dB speakers. Definitely seems to be one of those 'only in America' things. Like the woman who sued McDonalds cos her hot coffee was actually, would you believe it, hot.

We need to cure tinnitus, especially the kinds that are truly intrusive (I have three sounds but out of them just one is freaking me out large parts of the day).

Like I've said before I think it would be awesome if Apple could get involved in research for solving hearing issues and tinnitus – if nothing else to get more customers to be able to enjoy Apple Music more, which likely means they'll get more subscribers. :)
