Seems like apple took something away from android.. Apple's new notification seems to work exactly like droids does..

Except it makes me think that I should go with Android instead.

At this rate, it will have the superior features first.

In the mobile OS realm, Apple has really been playing catch-up for 2 years now. I'm not too optimistic that this year will be any different.

BUT, what keeps cautious is the good UI and beautiful hardware that Apple puts out. Now I just have to figure out if that's worth waiting a year for software features and for all of the other handcuffing that comes along with being an Apple customer.

There are significantly more IOS devices out there than Android devices. That is an indisputable fact. That is an Apple to Apple comparison, so to speak.

I just watch the keynote again and Scott said over 200 million IOS devices sold, that INCLUDES ipod touch, iphone, ipad and ipad 2.. Putting IOS as the largest mobile operating system... Take out ipod touch and ipads and android is ahead...

For selling over 200 million devices for a 44% market share and android having a 28% share, that's a 16% difference.. Android is not far behind.. If you go by a phone to phone comparison android would jump ahead...

Apple keeps touting how much they have sold.. Of course they do for investors, they are not ahead by that much... Like I said take ipads out of the picture and see what kind of market share they have then... Probably still impressive but know where near what they are saying they have now...

Fanboys just don't want to admit that apple is finally still playing catch-up on software that has been out for a while..

Hate to say this but, I see android coming ahead big time in the next year and apple will fall further behind...

Long time Macheads will quickly tell you that we understand that the iPhone will eventually loose the majority of the market. Android unified the copy cat phones that followed Apple for 3 years. It was Android that gave LG, Samsung, Sony etc... all hope they could start selling phones capable of competing against the iPhone. Android was whored out to everyone who wanted to hit it. You get good products and bad outta that relationship.

Look at a company like BB who sells their phone with their own OS. Apple does this and makes plenty of money and sells tons of iOS devices. Look at how simple and uniform using an iOS device is rather than an Android. I have played with Android phones that can't run certain apps because the app wasn't written for their device. Even Android users will tell you it's not the rose garden that some people make it out to be.

Why can't we all just enjoy what we are getting and stop spamming these forums? I'm not saying what Apple released should be your dreams come true... all I am saying is that we all have our opinions and those opinions that do not help towards the release of iOS5 or anything to do with an iPhone should not be a part of this forum. My 2 cents.

/Request move to wasteland - along with all the other complaining threads.

I will agree with you.. I am currently using a BB 9700 right now but switched to droid for a couple of weeks.. I just couldn't get used to it.. Not sure why just couldn't do it..

I still have my iphone 3G but basically use it for my ipod.. I'm thinking about getting the iphone 4 but I'm gonna wait to see what rumors come out about a different iphone later this year.. I will give it till sept and if I don't hear anything I will probably just get the 4...

I don't get how they're falling behind in anything. They were before, but after today, I think that Apple is pretty much caught up with everyone else, and even got a little far ahead as far as all the cloud services go. Sounds like you'd be happier using Android :).

so basicly Apple cheats and has to add in there iPods and iPads to make themselves look better when comparing themselves to just phones.

Not exactly what I call a valid pie chart but Apple marketing BS. In this case not a valid argument for phones.

That is not only comparing against phones, its comparing against mobile OSes and it include any other devices running the OS.

This is not "marketing BS", because they are speaking to DEVELOPERS. For IOS. Hence is ONLY makes sense to show the DEVELOPERS how much market share IOS has vs ANDROID.

How frickin hard is it for some of you to understand. This wasn't an iPhone developer conference.

Seriously, some of you in this thread....wow.

Android is always going to be higher in market share in phones unless something catastrophic happens. However, in overall OS marketshare, Android will need to make a dent in iOS's other devices, unless the ipod touch becomes obsolete (possible) and the iPad fades (less possible).

I don't drink the "koolaid" so to speak, so I wont at all say that it isn't possible, but I haven't seen much potential in Android non-phone devices yet. Nothing that suggests some kind of wave is building in the same fashion that it did with phones. They are two very different markets.

Just remember that everyone said all the same things about the ipod and it never lost its stranglehold on that market. So the ipad could be the iphone, or it could be the ipod, or something in between.

What it likely wont be is a fading fad. Even being something in between, if apple expands the line of iphones in addition, its not likely that they will end up with less than 30-40% of the overall market.

And I am not at all saying that 40-50% will be android either, I expect windows to come back into this an at least be a player.

I don't think they're falling behind at all. They're just very carefull with implementing things, because everything has to "work". Work perfectly , that is.

Lol. Whatusmokin?

It's the truth. Did you noticed the IP4 when it was released, the worldwide phone stock was sold out for weeks after weeks after weeks? A friend of mine bought his early this year, and he had to wait like 2 weeks for his because there were no Iphone 4s in stock.

The devil is in the details.

Apple's piechart is referring to ALL MOBILE device marketshare...they are including iPads, iPod touches and iPhones....

Android is beating iPhone in Smartphone marketshare.
These are details that YOU are being selective about. The WWDC was about iOS, not iOS for iPhone. As far as hardware is concerned, who's leading in smartphone marketshare, then?

Exactly, why would it matter to a developer that Android has more IF you arbitrarily exclude a set of devices?

Developers care about how many potential customers they have to purchase their software.

It is literally idiotic that there are people in this thread that dont seem to understand what this conference was, and who the attendees were, and why Apple showed them an iOS marketshare chart instead of a smartphone marketshare chart.

Apple is selling a single phone. Android is selling a lot of phones, a lot of different prices, so there are a LOT of different choices for consumers. They might be ahead , or might be getting ahead with numbers and all that - but I still see Apple on that in terms of functionality and so forth.

You obviously have a marketing MBA. Apple is in this to make money. They make money from pushing hardware. Their hardware makes the most money out of any other manufacturer.

As someone who was not blown away by iOS 5 and is considering alternatives (Windows Phone or HP), there's no denying that Apple's business model for what they're trying to do is the most successful in the world and it's only getting better for them.

Yes, that's the point. It doesn't matter since Apple is not really competing head to head against Google. Apple is competing against ASUS, HTC, Motorola, SAMSUNG, Nokia, BBM, HP, etc.

I don't own Apple stock so I could give a hoot if they are #1 or #5. I just want to enjoy their products. And I enjoy their products more than those that use Google. If Apple used Android, I'd probably still buy the iDroid because I LIKE THE HARDWARE Apple makes and I like that they're in control of the OS they use. One iDroid is released a year and it actually gets full product support and software updates. Wouldn't that be nice, Android users?

Well, I don't know if I'd use a Honeycomb iPad, but I'm sure even Honeycomb would be decent in Apple's little walled of ecosystem.

I do mobile device support for my company, so I get to play with a lot of different devices. I still can wrap my brain around how anybody thinks the iPhone is behind Windows 7 Phone. I don't even think Microsoft think its going to be much of a success.

In addition, I cant figure out 1 good reason now to use an Android device over the iPhone. The only think I found better on Android was the notifications. Now that advantage is gone.

There are plenty of reasons, like one size does not fit all.
Some people prefer the level of configuration and tweaking you can do with android that is not available with iOS (unless you JB)
People don't like the walled garden closed system that is iOS
Others don't like apple and they'll choose something that does not a fruit for a logo.

I've used android and iOS, both have strengths and weaknesses. Its really personal preference and how a given phone/OS meets the need of the consumer. Shocking as it may be, iOS does not fit everyone's needs.

Good job answering a completely different question/statement from the one that I quoted in my post[/quote]

You said that it takes 5-6 Android phones to do what one iPhone can. Besides the fact that there are more Android smartphones than iPhones; and besides the fact that even with the 5.0 update, iOS is still missing features that Android has..... what exactly are you trying to say?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_6 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8E200 Safari/6533.18.5)

Not trying to stir anything up but I was kinda hoping for a bit more than iCloud as being Apple's newest, most innovative thing. Yeah, iOS 5 will be nice but still, nothing we haven't already seen. Apple are losing to android and windows phone right now...that is unless they really blow us away in September like everyone is saying.

Apple isn't falling behind, they're upgrading their software and features. You don't need new hardware every two months like Android does. It's called smart marketing. If you think Apple is falling anywhere look at their revenue, market share, and stock price.

Walled garden? Don't tell me you really think Android is "open"? Still cant think of any reason to use Android (unless you are a sprint or tmobile customer)

When is Android going to include the missing features that iOS has? Like a lag free OS, a decent music/media app, and a much better native email client.

I was actually impressed with the Keynote. Yes, there are some things that competitors had first but Apple is taking those things and making them better. I wouldn't say they are falling behind.

Lol, so first the whole phone industry copies everything from Apple and now apple is catching up with what other people copied from them?

1. Android already has lag free phones. Try a Nexus S or the Galaxy S II.

2. You're going to have to elaborate on what you mean by a 'decent music app' because each phone maker (HTC, Samsung, Motorola, LG, etc) has their own music app and then there is the stock app. The stock app lets you make playlists, shows all the MP3 ID tag data (and art) and lets you sort by song/artist/album/etc. What else are you looking for in a music app?

3. Are you kidding? Gmail absolutely destroys every mail service on the planet. The android version does have more features than the iOS version.... so maybe that is why you think it isn't up to snuff?

What else ya got?
