Not a big radio listener but why the hell did we need FOUR more Beats stations?

Could just be future proofing. They might not launch all 4 next year, but don't want to register Beats 2 and then in the years to come have to fight for the trademark.

I don't think they will ever be ripping off BBC Radio 4 or Radio 5, though I would love to hear Eddy Cue bigging up the Archers at the next Apple keynote. :D

Even though a lot of people would enjoy a station based on Radio 3, classical music doesn't seem to be an ideal match to the current Beats image.
And if it's not BBC then it's Sirius. I am baffled as to why Apple thinks the future of music is internet radio stations that sound an awful lot like terrestrial radio with loud dj voices and cheesy station indentification playing over songs.

Smart move by Apple. Beats1 generally catered to/reached the most popular market with the most popular genres. They are probably comfortable with the growth and stability of AM in the market place. Comfortable enough to serve up stations catering to something other than primarily mainstream Pop/Hip Hop. They'll probably look at the segment with the next highest potential (if they already haven't) and intro Beats2, with the rest to follow. Nothing wrong with that.

Beats 1 plays a lot of hip hop because hip hop *is* the dominant/most popular genre of popular music in this decade. So if they're going to play more of any one thing on a single station, it makes sense for it to be hip hop. Super cool to see them branching out into new stations. Hopefully that means they're starting to see traction on the Music.

Tried to listen to Apple Radio several times and it sucked. Would love to be able to listed to new music from specific genres, but it seemed to me at the time that the genre police were not very well trained. Where they got the genre correct, the same limited tunes played over and over again.

I'm not exactly sure what Apple is up to at the moment with Apple Music and Beats Radio but whatever it is, it has not impressed me so far.

More evidence that Beats radio is just BBC radio ripoff. I'd love to know how many people are actually listening now semi regular basis.
I listen every day. Zane Lowe curates music in a special way. He is incredibly knowledgable and Beats 1 shows that Apple is in the driver seat of setting the tone in music culture around the world. I know some people do not understand the music but understanding popular culture and shaping it is a powerful thing.

Actually it's not... Regular old Pop music came back in favor.

You could argue that one of the biggest stars of the past 5 years is a country artist (Taylor Swift)...

No reason to play all hip hop and not mix it up. But the target audience of Beats is the hip hop culture so that's what they play. It's not what most want to hear.

Lets see here...

So would this mean the "five additional radio stations without need to neglect terms." would be just thrown out because of this patent? or would they still be kept? I guess if u have 5 Beats stations, there would be no need for that. Right ?

This would be nice!

I really liked Beats 1 when it first started but lately there has been more and more talking and interviews which is getting annoying.

Pro tip: When the article presented as evidence starts with "This article has multiple issues", you're better off finding other evidence to prove your point. Just saying.

Taylor Swift being one of the biggest stars has nothing to do with the genre subject. As a fan of country music (and many other genres) I can say she was never a country artist. She was bundled, packaged, and marketed as country but it was pretty clear she was a pop singer. That's a subject for a different time.

Like it or not Hip Hop has it's fingerprint all over this decade. The influence can even be seen in country music (to the chagrin of a lot of people), pop music, edm, trap, chill, etc. Hip Hop was the easiest avenue to the largest audience, regardless of a person's favorite genre.

You say it's not what most want to hear. Does that imply you know what most do want to hear? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Doesn't matter what you think - when their music is categorized as X it's X no matter how much you and others would like it to be Y.

That's fine and I didn't say that. But hip hop as the dominant music of the 2010s is not a truth. It has influenced, sure. But it's not the dominant force like it was previously. All music has been influenced by other music.

Nope. I have no clue what most want to hear. I know what I want to hear and that's about it. But it's safe to say most people don't want to hear the current music that is played on Beats 1.

I can't wait to find out when and how the new stations will be developed. I'm guessing it will be similar to BBC radio; which is fine by me. I'm more into blogging and listening to beats1, or podcast type of content then watching TV these days. TV is junk and uninteresting.

That's a valid point. Can't blame apple too much, cause they are out of the depth , more concerned that the beats boys they paid a fortune for, have no vision. If they do, I am missing it.

I stopped listening on day 2 when i decided Beats 1 must be Hip-Hop Rap. Maybe they will offer something for a broader audience.
