Wow, Apple provides a freebie (refund of repair costs for those affected), and some people still have their panties in a bunch?

I wouldn't call a company taking 5 years to acknowledge bad hardware and by that time, hardware that most people no longer use or have replaced - a freebie. I would call it a lack of concern and a slap in the face to anyone that buys their products. I guess you don't see the "Apple" pattern emerging here? Hell, even I can see the pattern and the only thing I own is the iPhone 4. If Apple has a major problem, they deny it. They keep doing that or come up with a stupid answer and leave it at that. When the products EOL comes around or has passed, only then do they acknowledge any past issues and then, offer some stupid restitution. People SWOON over it thinking Apple is doing good. All the while, you had to use that defective item for the past 5 years.

No thanks.

People waiting for Apple to admit that the iPhone 4 has a bad antenna (mine doesn't) and offer a fix are going to be waiting for a long wile.

You're in la la land if you think your precious "doesn't" have the antenna issue. It effects ALL iPhone 4 users. Period. It's by design. So unless you have a newly designed phone, you're part of the club. Besides, there is no fix for it. A full redesign is the only fix. ;)

what about 8800GT?

How about the, also well known defect, 8800GT?

I purchased an upgrade kit from Apple last year for my 1st gen Mac Pro, to replace my 7300GT, and it fried itself this August. I did a bit of research, it was a well known and common problem where the GPU would unmount under general heating issue due to an nVidia defect.

My MacBook Pro went out last September with its M8600GT and I did a repair on it shortly after.

I had contacted Apple last mouth after I read an article issued by Apple saying that they would refund all MBP repair due to this graphic card issue, which they did (and now I have a 5770 in my MacPro).

So, now they are addressing the X1900 XT recall, when are they gonna do the same for the 8800GT? It is well know, well documented, well published. And since nVidia had already acknowledge the defect, when is Apple going to recall to card for refund?

This is like the Catholic church finally admitting 300 years later they were wrong about Galileo.

Wow that old thing!!!

I still think it was funny how Apple took the , yeah its a problem, but its not ours stance.

Better late th.... ah forget it.

I received one of these gems in my 2006 Mac Pro. It was problematic after 3 months of flawless performance, then downhill from there. Artifacts galore and screen stripes.

My problem now....the required serial number on my card is not the V6Z required for replacement.

Steve: "Do we still make those? Hey do you remember that video card problem? Did we ever type that press release about the fix? I know I had it on my desk when I was eating a pizza back in 08."

Steve doesn't eat pizza.

This is very similar to my situation, but it took about 8 months to a year. Fortunately I have V6Z. Just not sure if I have the receipt for my new card.

Stores aren't in the know...

As soon as I read this I ripped the card out of my Macpro and headed to the store. They had no idea about this replacement and wanted me to bring in the whole machine and they would "test" it and "maybe the work would be covered"
I showed them the article on the apple.com page and they ordered a replacement graphics card for me after the serial numbers checked out.

Finally, my clients can watch their videos with out having to explain what that green line is across their footage!

Almost five years to acknowledge a problem. That's how they stay number 1 in Customer Satisfaction.

Apple: You do not have a problem.
Apple Sycophant: I do not have a problem.

Apple: Check off Extremely Satisfied.
Apple Sycophant: Checking off Extremely Satisfied.

Apple: These are not the droids you're looking for.
Apple Sycophant: These are not the droids we're looking for.

Apple: Steve needs your kidney.
Apple Sycophant: Here take it.

Apple? Heck, I thought you were just describing Fox News. :D

I went to the San Francisco Stockton St. store with my ATI X1900 XT card (with a serial number containing "V6Z"), and my MacPro serial number.... after nearly forty minutes I was told that my MacPro serial number was not within the range of serial numbers for MacPros effected by the replacement plan, though I was told they would replace the card... but, I'd have to come back with ATI card in a few days when they got a replacement ordered.

Havent read the thread yet , but us 20" 2006 imac owners suffered the same fate with the x1600 graphics distortions! WHAT ABOUT US!!!!!!!!!

mine too

I have the 2006 Mac Pro that came with one of these and I replaced it a few months ago with an Apple 4870 upgrade ($349). I made an appt at the genius bar today after seeing this post and took the old card in with my mac pro serial number (from the System profile) along with my receipt for the replacement card. He looked everything up and created a repair ticket. I was told the only thing he could do was offer an exchange for an Nvidia 8800 in store. For a refund of the replacement card I had to call Apple Care to have them process the claim.

That was a whole to do. At first the automated system looked up my serial number and said my system was out of warranty, so I had the option to buy a $49 single issue support help or hang up. I figured out that you have to say "Advisor" in order to get someone on the line without buying a support option. I gave them my repair order number that the Genius created for me and after 45 minutes on hold, I was transferred to a customer care person who gave me an email address to send in the copy of my replacement receipt. She told me (as did the Genius) that the refund has a cap at $250, but she would put in my request for a refund for the full amount or cap, which ever was greater. Then she explained that it could take 4-6 weeks to get a refund approved, but that she would keep it on her list of tickets to check on.

So, I don't know for sure if they will refund the $250 or the $349 that I paid for the replacement, or just tell me that my system is more than 3 years past the date of purchase (and I'm out of luck). Why they would limit this to systems within the past 3 years, but they took 4 years to acknowledge the problem... that doesn't make much sense.

We'll see...

Eff apple. I have a macpro 2006 (1.1) wanted to upgrade my card and was told there were no available upgrades. I found out that though apple claimed the ati hd 4870 did not work on my model that after some research it was in fact compatible at $400+(apple price). Well a little digging I found out that the ati branded was the exact same hardware and hackers found a way to flash the ROM to work on a macpro. I did it and it took 10 minutes at a total cost of $80.
Eff apple and their genius's. LOL

Wow, Apple waits until the hardware is obsolete, which also means the hardware is much cheaper, and then decides to offer a freebie, when most people can't take advantage of the hardware anymore as its obsolete (or they had already upgraded due to apples inaction), and some people still have their panties in a bunch?

What type of card are they replacing the 1900 with?

I looked at my MacPro's card last night and it is indeed the one. I was confounded by my screen blanking or a boot that would stop at a white screen... al intermitant problems but annoying... especially when you must re-boot to get the screen to show. Now I know why.

I was wondering what choice if any there will be for a replacement... Get a new 1900? I hope not.

Question???

Does anyone know if they are going to cover the cards that dont have the V6Z serial # that are having problems as well? It just seems kind of stupid to only cover certain cards and not all of them if they know that all of the X1900 series were having issues!

Also, enough crying about it being 5 years later..... Atleast they decided to do it period ya know?

Yeah i am having the same issue where i boot into a blank white screen and sometimes have to restart to get the video to work. From what i have heard they are replacing the X1900's with the Nvidia 8800GT which is atleast a little newer lol

And yet SO MANY people on here just LOVE everything Steve does.

And some wonder why I like some Apple products but hate Apple the company and their CEO who is king of the greedmongers.

I'm stuck with the defective ExpressCard slot of 2008/09 Unibody Macbook Pros for nearly two years (one Logic Board and one complete MBP replacement already done). So compared to the time it took to acknowledge the ATI problem I'm half way through, that's promising.

I have the same question....my card had a strange problem..no video after reboot, but after several it would come back. Until 2 weeks ago. No video. I shared the screen from my MBP and it showed a blank screen. Took the card out, bought a new one (4870 HD) from Apple and it works fine (much quieter, too). That was on the 16th. 12 days later, this announcement is made. I called Applecare and they said to take the card to an Apple store and they will refund my purchase. I asked if they would do it even though I did not have the correct serial number. He said "yes." I'm not convinced this will go smoothly, but I'll try today and report back. My guess is that they will punt me back to AppleCare....
