I wonder how the refunds will go for affected users.... anyone with a 2006 MP that got this issue, with Apple failing to come clean in a timely fashion, I'd guess they already bought a new card and moved on.

So, will the refund be for the replacement card they had to buy? specially since most of them do not need 2nd working card in a box - specially a new+outdated X1900 XT one.

Or, will they refund the cost of a ATI X1900 XT card? and if so, will they refund today's price? which one? I see these cards are currently selling at either $277 or $665... the gap in price is baffling.

Or... will they refund the original card price - back in 2006. Four years later? Really? Anyone remember how was this card priced by Apple then?

Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted about this. I think this case is a hallmark that may affect how will Apple tackle other similar issues over longer periods of time, like the faulty nVidia 8600M GT / MacBook Pro fiasco.

cheers!

I've got one of the faulty cards, and of course, it was just last week I replaced it with a 8800GT... Fortunately I kept the old card... I wonder what they will give us in exchange...

Like everyone else I'm amazed it's taken apple so long to acknowledge this!! I'm on my 3rd card, they should ditch this POS card and give us all different ones as even though mine is still working I can't play games cos it overhears so badly (I'm worried about frying it again!) and every month I have to blow dust from it cos it has such poorly designed fans.... The card is a lemon and needs ditching altogether... It's the one thing that's soured my experience of buying a mac pro... Although since I'm now out of warranty I guess I'll have a look to see if I've eligible... At least I get a fresh card...

This is kind or rediculous. I had one of these but after about a year and a half it was causing so many problems I bought the nvidia 8800 or whatever is was. I've since sold that mac pro and thrown away the defective card (why keep it?!) so no hope, just wasted money

Terrible Timing

Mine died 3 weeks ago, I got a 5770 to replace it last week.

I hope they give me a store voucher rather than replace the card as I don't need more than 3 monitors.

Okay so how long is it going to take them to acknowledge that the NVidia 9600M has serious problems?

I bought an ATIX1900 as a replacement for the original card. The ATI died after 13 months, it would never come on at power on, ha to sleep wake the computer till it eventually came to life. I still have the card, but I had to swap it out for a different card.

My serial is not one of these listed. :(

So im still out of pocket.,

I'm sorry, but AHAHAHAHAHA -- 3 years, that's so funny -- not funny they ignored it, but funny they acknowledge it after all this time!

Just long enough for virtually everyone who is effected to have replaced the cards (and in some cases, the entire computer) and thrown away any parts or documentation required for refund/replacement. Same as what happened here.

People waiting for Apple to admit that the iPhone 4 has a bad antenna (mine doesn't) and offer a fix are going to be waiting for a long wile.

No they won't. You can pretty much guarantee the next iPhone 4 update in Q1/2 will fix it.

The clue here should be in the use of the word "Pro" with respect to an Apple product. Apple don't get mainstream press on MacPros, they don't run TV ads for them, they don't hawk them in Best Buy, they don't update them with cutting-edge engineering every 6 months ...

they really don't give a **** about the people who buy them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason they issued this fix was because someone left an old MacPro lying around and Steve tripped over it on his way to the bathroom.

Steve: "Do we still make those? Hey do you remember that video card problem? Did we ever type that press release about the fix? I know I had it on my desk when I was eating a pizza back in 08."

I have one of the cards with a V6Z in the last part of the serial number. However I have never had a single problem with it.

The first thing I did however was dump the craptastic heat sink and fan unit and replace with a Arctic Cooling Accelero x2.

My guess is that the factory installed HSF was not doing its job and heat has slowly but surely killed everyone's cards. :(

They will refund the cost of the new card, they processed the cost of my 4780 earlier today :).

Regards,
John.

Yeah, it took them this long to OFFICIALLY and PUBLICLY announce this. while this certainly would have helped before, i think people are underestimating how many were replaced before this statement.

X1900XT Serial number

Any one know how to find out the serial number of this card "X1900XT" without taking the machine apart?

Meh.. this is Apple all over. Both my ex and myself had the same '06 Intel iMac, which started crapping out graphically after a short while. Apparently, they'd never seen the issue before! Still, got it replaced for free due to education store buy :D Other manufacturers repair/replace without a second thought.

Ha! Almost 4 years later for some people... pathetic Apple, that it took you this long to realize there was a problem. Or did you know all along...?

If I buy a New MacPro today, can I wait 4 years before I pay ?
Apple's way of thinking is: "pay now, and get a working computer in 4 years"

No wonder they have so much $ in the bank.

Fantastic business model.

Wow, Apple provides a freebie (refund of repair costs for those affected), and some people still have their panties in a bunch?

It would have been incredibly nice to have more three years ago, when the machine was still reasonably in its prime. I don't get how you can ignore that it's a four year old problem. What kind of bubble are you in?

I had to buy a totally different card (a more recent nVidia) to get a Mac Pro that doesn't glitch out every six months.

I'm in the same position, only my 1900XT died a few months back and I was waiting for the new cards rather than forking for an outdated card. I wonder what, if anything, I can get refunded now...
