Well they're still very hard to find in the UK at the moment, I did buy one last week (which seems to have been the last 64gb WiFi only model available even though I just strolled into a store and bought it!).
It was mainly to use when travelling and for the first hour or so I was a little underwhelmed - it's like a big iPhone 4 with a worse screen. A couple of days and apps later and I get it, with iPad specific apps there are some really good things starting to happen, even just for regular sites like IMDB and Twitter, in the UK Autotrader is our main car selling site and it's about 5 times faster on the iPad app than the regular website on any PC.
Garageband is awesome, I work for a speaker company (Acoustic Energy) and half our staff are rock musicians - when we hooked it up to a big set of speakers and let them go to town they all decided they wanted one, I know you can get it on the Mac but the touch and pressure-sensitive instruments wouldn't work the same way. In many ways it's a toy but as it gains acceptance and the "Cloud" services all start to kick in it'll start to make a lot more sense.
The low-res screen concerns me - if the next gen is indeed higher res which it probably has to be then what happens to the apps? iPhone apps look ridiculous, will the older iPads be able to downscale iPad 3 apps or will they simply not run? If there ends up being multiple variations of everything that will only lead to awkwardness for developers and less support for these earlier models.
As an aside I took my iPad back for a refund - it had one dead pixel, one stuck green pixel and light leakage down the left side. None of this was drastic and I could have lived with it but for £560 I expect this glorified netbook to be perfect considering I could have bought a pretty powerful PC for the same money. The lady at the store said Apple have to verify all returns before they will accept a refund but when she punched it into the system it had a new note saying "Apple no longer require fault verification on iPads for return". Seems this QC issue must be quite a biggie. Are Apple slipping as they become more mass-market? Victims of their own success or just a blip? Hmm. I'll be buying another as soon as I can but I wonder if the quality will be better - no-one else noticed the problems I did but not everyone is as picky - fingers crossed!
