...never used Peloton before - just looked on their website and it seems that along with the initial £12.99 a month subscription fee, you can also hire their equipment also (bikes and treadmill).

Might have to look into this a little more - there treadmill looks fantastic (which is what I would use).

Digital app is great. You get one month free to try out. Works with Apple Watch for heart rate

Peloton is good, wide range of workouts like fitness plus but unlike Apple, you can airplay the workouts or if you have fire tv like me, they have an app on that. Yes it’s more a month than Apple but so far after my experience with Apple over this it’s worth paying the extra.

as for the equipment I wouldn’t know much, I think the equipment is very expensive and for me is not worth it so I just use the digital app

...thanks for this.

I do find that Apple Fitness is rather limited. I tend to normally do 30 minute HIIT sessions - Apple only seem to have about 3-5 different 30 minute ones!

For me Fitness+ is so cheap because of the bundling with Apple One. I can't justify paying for the Peloton app.

My family was running out of storage on the 200GB plan, so I need to upgrade to 2T plan - $10

My family uses Apple Music - has for years - $15

I really wanted Apple News - $10

With Apple One Premier at $30, Fitness+ is effectively free.

While peloton does have a larger library of workouts, they have been out for a while and apple will be releasing new workouts each week! I would prefer to use apple fitness over peloton but unless they either give us airplay support or give me a free apple tv (im still trying on that one 🤣) its just not worth my money

Agree — currently use Peloton digital app with a Keiser bike. Was really looking forward to using Fitness+ instead. But Fitness+ currently offers a very limited number of classes in each category of exercise/activity — not enough yet to compete with Peloton for sure. I assume that Apple will slowly add more classes as time goes on, assuming they can attract enough subscribers who are willing to pay to watch workouts on tiny screens. I’m not interested in buying AppleTV or watching Fitness+ on my iPad. I suspect many others feel the same — looking for a true competitor, or worthy supplement, to the Peloton digital app, and so far Fitness+ definitely disappoints.

Also peloton app syncs with Bluetooth cadence on the bike. Not sure how you can do a bike workout without it.

I get that, but I don’t care much about cadence. I’m able to “calibrate” my cadence well enough for my purposes. I just follow along as best I can when using Peloton digital app classes on my Keiser. I don’t care about competitive stats or the leaderboard. Works just fine for me, though I know many people really like/want the cadence. To each, his/her/their own!

I think if I didn't have the USB-C to HDMI hacky solution through my iPad, I'd be canceling too. I'm not on the Apple One plan because family Apple Music is already through Verizon, otherwise I'd maybe switch to that.

Disappointed in the way they're moving lately with not allowing AirPlay, etc. It'll be interesting to see how well Fitness+ does in the next year. I'm sure it's fine on a tiny screen if you're on a treadmill or bike, but for all the other workouts, it's utterly impractical to not have it available on tv's everywhere, not just the latest (oh I mean 3+ years old) AppleTV hardware.

So this my third response from them!

That's basically the math I did on this as well.

That’s my reasoning in reverse! If not for the AirPlay failure I was looking to stop paying monthly for Spotify Premium, Peloton digital app, and Cloud storage and move into the Apple One Premier program. But unless/until Apple makes it easy for me to get Fitness+ onto my SmartTV without buying an AppleTV, I’ll stay where I am.

I am on the phone it’s Apple Support at the time of this post.
Call started at 12:18 pm CST. Will update as call progresses.
Okay, have just been escalated to the next level, have explained the situation yet again, and now on hold, again.
OKAY...
HERE’S THE DEAL AND IT SUCKS.

As some others have suggested it is an Apple TV DEVICE (not to be confused with the Apple TV APP) marketing PLOY. If you’ve got one you are GOLDEN. If you don’t “oh, so sorry...” In my case, I was trying to use my Roku but NOOOOOOOOooooooooo. It won’t work. The only way it will work is as a SEPARATE stand alone app on your TV or, in my case, on my Roku. I will repeat: It will be a stand alone Apple Fitness+ App you would download onto your DEVICE, NOT through the 🍎TV APP and, of course, it’s not offered at this time...
”oh, so sorry”.
So assume the position, people.

Given the recent HBO Max/ Warner debacle with Roku... I don’t have any confidence what-so-ever it will be coming to Roku soon. Sorry folks.

I’m OUT.

So just had another chat with Apple support, this time on the phone and got a completely different answer! They said I would need a newer Apple TV box which supports tvOS in order to get fitness plus on my tv! So basically airplay is not supported! Obviously Apple themselves don’t have a clue what they’re doing so consider my subscription cancelled and back to peloton digital! Can see the majority of people cancelling fitness plus
Exactly!

I just got off the phone with them and they said Apple TV device or nothing.
Spoken to them three times, spoke to two tech advisors who assured me that Apple are aware of the airplay issue and an app update is coming soon which will allow you to airplay fitness plus to airplay compatible devices. the other advisor just didn’t understand what I was saying.

I have a follow up call tomorrow with a senior tech advisor to log the issue and will again ask them about airplay support.

from what I have read about this issue, they are getting bombarded with complaints and a lot have threatened to send back there new Apple watches over this and some lucky few (mostly in US) have been given credit to allow them to purchase an Apple TV, I have tried that one but to no success yet!

for me it does look a little bit like a bug as up until yesterday I was able to airplay workouts to my tv but only audio and then today the option to airplay has been removed hinting at it was an option that didn’t work and will need an update

I think Apple support is confused. The only words out of our mouths when talking to them should be "AirPlay". We want to use an officially supported device - iPhone, iPad, Apple TV (device!!) that is able to run the current generation operating systems. THEN - we want to use an external monitor for display. We would like to talk to that external monitor with AirPlay. (I'd even accept a cable solution if they can make that work reliably, but that is not what this thread is about.)

The external monitor just has to support AirPlay - it doesn't need a single app on it - no Netflix, no Apple TV (app), no imagined Fitness+ app, etc etc etc. The whole topic of a smart TV with apps is confusing the issue.

Now, modern Roku devices support AirPlay (I think). So you can consider such a Roku with its attached TV to be a single thing - an external monitor that you connect to with AirPlay. Such a Roku could have no apps on it at all. It's just supporting Airplay to get the picture to the TV. The particular apps running on the Rodu is confusing the issue the same way the apps on the smart TV is.

When Apple says you can't use your TV with AirPay because the TV is not a supported device - challenge that. You can use headphones when using Fitness+. That's an external audio device in the same fashion that we want an external video device.

I think the people who have had luck with Apple have found a support person who understands the simple thing being requested.

Exactly right! I have an iPad, iPhone and Apple TV 3rd gen... all I want is to be able to use airplay to mirror fitness plus onto my tv

I have iphone 11 plus and apple watch 5. Apple fitness will mirror to my tv until I start a video workout. It even plays instructional apple fitness videos on my tv. When the watch becomes an element, it doesn´t mirror- the audio is on the tv but the screen is black. I´ll give it the free month to see if they work this out- otherwise I´m out of here.

Not’s not what they are saying at all. While Roku does support AirPlay Apple Fitness+ does not.

So I chatted with Apple support too. The support person seemed to just repeat what the fitness+ pages say. Eg airplay not being mentioned is intentional. But at the same time, hdmi usb-c cable from ipad isn’t mentioned and that works.

I’d totally imagined just air playing from my phone. The ipad was only supposed to be used if I wanted a workout where no tv is around.

This whole release has made it seem like they in fact want it to fail. They got subscriptions to Apple One before adding the fitness component, then release itself was so rough. Now this position about it.

My personal view on this....

if Airplay was not supported, the majority of us wouldn’t have even been able to airplay even just the audio as it would have all been blocked by Apple. As this is not the case my view is airplay was meant to be supported but Apple being Apple (rushing things) they made a mess of it and will fix it... my guess tho not till the new year what with Xmas and nye right around the corner

as for the Apple Watch element people are going on about, if using AIRPLAY your watch is connected to either your iPhone or iPad your using for fitness plus! At no point is the Apple Watch trying to connect to your tv or other devices. All airplay is doing is mirroring what is on your iPhone or iPad so, watch connectivity doesn’t even come into play with this issue

as much as people may want to think Apple is out to get all our money ( which to some extent they are I agree) to make everyone buy an Apple TV costing at least £150, it doesn’t make sense business wise! I could be wrong but if they want to compete with the likes of peloton (which they do) this wasn’t an intentional move as the majority of people will just cancel their subscription

joke #1 - how trained Apple support is

joke #2 - how Apple didn't realize Fitness+ is so limited on an iPhone if the picture can't be displayed on a larger screen

Manager - "Hey guys, we're meeting to discuss requirements for a new product called Fitness+."
Developer - "Huh? Please pass the donuts."
