HDMI via USBC is a great option for those who have an iPad Pro. It seems Apple is scared someone is going to rip them all and put them on the pirate bay.... but me and everyone else has to suffer this dumb DRM. That’s the only genuine reason I can think of not having this on airplay and via lighting to hdmi adapter.

FWIW, I talked to Apple Support on twitter and they are indicating that it *should* work. Still going back and forth about "troubleshooting" it even though I know it's not going to work. But so far they are not indicating that it is intentionally not supported. So maybe that's some hope that it will get fixed.

I am very disappointed that screen mirroring does not work. I just got a new 55" LG with AirPlay2 with the plan to mirror workouts from my iPhone or iPad. I have an AppleTV connected to my primary system upstairs, but I'm not going to drag my bike trainer up from the basement for a cycle workout. So much for the basement pain cave that I just setup with floor padding, TV, and sound system. There's just no technical reason why this can't work. There's nothing special about the screen content vs. anything else on the iPhone. Sure would be nice to get an official statement from Apple.

I’m a bit gutted about this. I spend most weeknights in hotels, and was planning on using an HDMI adapter to use Fitness+ in my hotel room. I’ve Apple TV at home, but I’m not too enthusiastic about taking it with me when I’m on the road.
This poses another question... would I need an Internet connection for my Apple TV for this to work in a hotel? I wouldn’t want to have to pay £15 a night for hotel wi-fi on top of everything else!

for me Airplay didn’t worked.
But, I was able to make it work by connecting my iPad via HDMI to my tv

Well, now I'm afraid I have bad news. After further investigation, Apple Support confirmed that AirPlay is not supposed to work. I guess our best bet is to flood them with feedback requesting it. Definitely a bummer.

That’s bs. Fitness+ is damn near useless without airplay. Almost as dumb as removing the power brick from the iphones

I'm still hoping that it's a bug. Apple support is often wrong. I also called support on Tuesday. The person I talked to didn't understand the difference between Apple One and Fitness+. He was also not aware the Fitness+ was released the day before. Even with all that, he said it's not supported because of copyright issues. That didn't sound credible.

So, at this point I'm conditionally outraged. Here's my reasoning:

1 - They clearly advertised that you needed an Apple Watch.

2 - If you have an Apple Watch then you must have an iPhone.

3 - The workouts that require you to move around cannot be viewed using an iPhone. My daughter has 20/10 vision and had a terrible time last night using her iPhone 7. She was constantly having to move it around as she got on the floor, stood up, and did other shenanigans of the workout. Even an iPad is a stretch for older people or people with poorer vision (like me).

4 - People usually have televisions in more than one room and multiple people living at home. Heck, Fitness+ is advertised as sharable with your family. Also, more than one person might want to work out at the same time.

Conclusion: If this is by design, Apple expects everyone to have multiple Apple TV devices, one in each room they want to work out in. The iPhone that everyone has is not enough.

I've been disappointed by Apple, abandoned by Apple, unpleasantly surprised by Apple. But, this is the first time I'm outraged by Apple. Since I still think it might be a bug, please copy my name from the "I'm sure this is a bug" group to the "I'm conditionally outraged" group.

Apple Fitness+ is available as of today, and some customers have been wondering if it's possible to get the workout videos on a television set without an Apple TV.

Apple-Fitness-Plus-Feature.jpg

There are several smart TVs from brands like LG and Sony that support AirPlay 2 content, but it appears Fitness+ is not designed to work with AirPlay. MacRumors reader scar88 attempted to AirPlay a workout to an LG TV but found that the option was not available.

We tested with an Apple TV, and it appears that AirPlay doesn't even work when attempting to AirPlay to an Apple TV from an iPhone. The audio transfers over, but the video does not.

If AirPlay is indeed not allowed when using Fitness+, there will be no way to display workouts on a larger screen without having an Apple TV device, which some users will find disappointing.

Have you been able to get AirPlay to work with Fitness+ to a smart TV? Let us know in the comments.

I’m gonna admit it — pretty unhappy about this. Bought a Watch6 when it was introduced, for the sole purpose of being able to use Fitness+ with AirPlay on my SmartTV. This feels like an intentional bait and switch. Wouldn’t have bought the Watch6 if Apple had announced at the time that you would also need to buy an AppleTV in order to use Fitness+ on a reasonably-sized screen. In fact, come to find out, you don’t actually even need the Watch to use Fitness+ if you can live without the bio data that the watch provides (and I definitely can) — I might’ve bought the AppleTV instead of the watch if Apple hadn’t hidden the facts. Guess I’ll just put the Watch6 in a drawer with my original Apple Watch (I never found a lot of use for it either so never bought another Watch until Apple announced the false promise of Fitness+) and just keep using the Peloton digital app — it’s just a couple bucks more per month, and no you don’t need a Peloton bike to use their digital app, and it has great content and plays flawlessly on my SmartTV.

I agree that it feels like bait and switch.

I understand there might be technical issues with AirPlay that they chose not to address. But, from an end-user perspective it seems analogous to them saying "We made iWork for Apple devices only. If you run it on your Mac we won't support it displaying on your external monitor".

I yelled at Apple, and since they love me so much I expect them to pretend it was just a bug and then make Airplay work.

I'm also a happy Peloton Digital user, was psyched to try out Fitness+ as an alternative. For my Peloton rides I use my iPhone 11 Pro, but for the floor Peloton content (yoga, core etc) I just stream it to my Roku with Airplay 2. I'll still do some bike workouts on Fitness+ but the other stuff is useless to me until they get Airplay 2 sorted.

Why not use your Series 6 watch as a HR monitor input into Peloton iOS app? Works great, and all the workout results including HR sync to your Apple health/fitness profile. I'm loving Peloton but also loving the Watch fitness features, closing my rings every day. I've lost 20 lbs in 2 months :)

Just spoken to apple support online, they have assured me that airplay DOES work with fitness plus and they are aware there is an issue with it and are working on a fix so fingers crossed it’ll get sorted soon
I hope this is the case. I feel like everyone that talks to Apple Support gets a different pat answer. They might see their subscription numbers dwindle if they require the latest AppleTV to play workouts on a screen larger than an iPhone/iPad.

Opposite experience. Had two calls with a Senior Support member who was great about it, but after walking through troubleshooting ultimately told me that this isn't supported. Left product feedback so hopefully it gets read by someone higher.

Just feels like a lame cash grab if so. In addition to the numerous points above, this makes me wonder why they put so much effort into alternative workouts for people with mobility issues, but leave people with vision impairment out in the cold.

My intention of subscribing to Apple One Premier was to be able to share Fitness+ with my family, who own a variety of Airplay 2 enabled displays but no Apple TVs between any of us. Shame that this severely reduces usability for this service. Makes me consider unsubscribing. I really can't put another STB into my setup without costly splitter hardware.

Overall, it just sounds like a typical ploy by Apple / Tim Cook in trying to get us to spend more money.
As a brand, I am starting to hate Apple.

Although I don’t know that I would do this as Apple has, isn’t it Tim Cook’s obligation to his shareholders to get consumers to spend more money on Apple products? The relevant inquiry really is whether this potentially sharp business practice alienates more customers than it gains.

Color me alienated.

I spoke with a senior adviser at Apple and she said engineering knows about the problem and is working on a fix. She took some information from me and is following up on Tuesday with an update. Hopefully they can fix this quickly!

So just had another chat with Apple support, this time on the phone and got a completely different answer! They said I would need a newer Apple TV box which supports tvOS in order to get fitness plus on my tv! So basically airplay is not supported! Obviously Apple themselves don’t have a clue what they’re doing so consider my subscription cancelled and back to peloton digital! Can see the majority of people cancelling fitness plus

...never used Peloton before - just looked on their website and it seems that along with the initial £12.99 a month subscription fee, you can also hire their equipment also (bikes and treadmill).

Might have to look into this a little more - there treadmill looks fantastic (which is what I would use).
