This is also the company that made $700 wheels for a desktop computer. I've lost a little bit of faith in them and fully expect that they want us all to buy new AppleTVs (or clear our their stock of the 3 yr old devices so they can release a new one next year).

While I would love to have an AirPlay solution, I've lost some trust in Apple. This being typed from a 2015 MacBook Pro, with my Series 4 watch, and 12 Pro Max, and 11" 2018 iPad Pro and 2 ancient AppleTV's that don't run tvOS... so I'm all in on Apple. But... beginning to lose faith in some of their user hostile decisions lately.

Let's hope "it's a bug" and we get AirPlay at least. I'm super crossing my fingers :) Smart Apple would actually release an APP called Fitness+ across all kinds of platforms like Roku, Fire Stick, etc -- not sure how they expect a great subscriber base if we all have to pony up for brand new AppleTV's in whatever room we want to do a workout in. If they want subscribers like they did for Apple Music, make it available everywhere.

I think those here who feel this is a tactic to force people to buy Apple TVs don’t understand the revenue models at play, and how much Apple is moving to services revenue.

They will fix the AirPlay issue, it’s in their interest to do so, and the reason is simple math. An Apple TV is what, $130? Margins on services are much higher than on hard goods, and recurring revenue is more valuable than 1-time purchases. It’s simply much more valuable for them to get that many more people on Fitness+ at $10/mo than it is to move some more Apple TV’s.

A gambit to force us to buy Apple TV units? By this same logic Apple would have kept Apple Music and the TV+ streaming service locked to Apple devices - it sells more Apple devices right? But of course they didn’t, because reaching the millions who have Rokus or Android and signing them up at the monthly fees is much more valuable. That’s why I have a TV+ app on my Roku and Android users can get Apple Music. Same forces at work here.

Can someone advise the type c to hdmi cable that works with their iPad Pro to TV and Apple fitness? I was looking at the anker and want to be sure it works before I buy.

thanks

I'm using the second one with an HDMI 2.0 cable. It was easier for me to just keep an HDMI cable in the back and pop an adapter on it for when I need to plug my iPad in.

Who knows, maybe we'll see AirPlay actually work in a few weeks. That would be awesome. I'm keeping the service, but for now it's because I have a way to do my workouts on the TV.

Not’s not what they are saying at all. While Roku does support AirPlay Apple Fitness+ does not.

Just to confirm our understanding is the same:

Roku supporting AirPlay means that your iPhone can use AirPlay to connect to the Roku. Then your iPhone's contents would subsequently display on the Roku's attached TV. I believe that Fitness+ running on your iPhone cannot currently use AirPlay to display (via the Roku) on the attached TV.

There are two sides to the AirPlay problem in the scenario described above: the broadcasting side (Fitness+ on the iPhone) and the receiving side (the Roku). If you're saying the problem here is with Fitness+ and not with Roku, then I agree with you. I think that's what you meant by "While Roku does support AirPlay Apple Fitness+ does not."

I don't understand your first sentence.

Interesting that the previews work with Airplay but not the actual workout. Bought a Roku that supports Airplay but only get the audio. Disappointing. I believe you can buy Beachbody on Demand for the same yearly price and they have their own channel on Roku. Apple might want to address their competition and fix this. I don’t want to use it on a small device. Probably will waste my free 3 month trial.

Thats what i was told today and will confirm it tomorrow when they ring back... but its definately a positive sign

Who would have thought we would be glad to have airplay support 🤣🤣🤣
Did you hear back from Apple today?

Everyone should have Apple TV at this point. I don’t think it’s a big issue for real Apple enthusiasts who have bought into the ecosystem.
But it doesn’t work on older Apple TVs either. You can airplay the preview but not the actual workout. It doesn’t make sense that Fitness+ is only for real Apple enthusiasts.

Exactly. My old AppleTV's have worked great over these years, and I never felt the need to upgrade until Disney+ came out last year. And at that, with AppleTV's (at the time) not having been refreshed for over 2 years, I figured I'd wait... a $25 Fire Stick was a quick band-aid.

Of course, now we're 3+ years down the line with no AppleTV refresh, I'm not about to go spend $200 for 3 year old hardware with an A10 chip that will choke trying to play The Pathless. :)

My Apple third gen doesn’t work with apple fitness(which is stupid). No way I’m buying an overpriced 3 year old Apple TV 4K when a $20 fire stick does 99% of the same stuff. I’ll just use an type c to hdmi cable for my iPad.

Right i have some really bad news! Airplay is totally not supported and by the looks of it they have no intention of supporting it! So basically buy a £150 apple tv or get stuffed! Apple truely dont give a **** about there loyal customers! Disgusting! 🤬🤬🤬🤬

not really surprised that they want people to buy the Apple TV to support this.

no doubt the next one that they release will be heavily promoting Apple TV.

But what i dont get is they brought out the apple tv app? Why do that to include everyone then decide to go backwards on there decision
They will see it as well you can still use fitness+ on your phone or iPad like you can on the Apple TV app.

This just feels so Apple and so un Apple at the same exact time.

I cannot believe they would do app handoffs and disable screen mirroring. Even worse, handing off but not really handing off! You can't close the app on the iPhone? And it does feel indeed like they have purposely and knowingly disabled screen mirroring if what this support representative says is true. Also if this is true, the iPad "hack" hdmi-usbc cable seems freely at risk.

Yup. This the same company that removed charging bricks from their iPhones for the environment but yet ships iPhone with usb type c cords that doesn’t work with older iPhone charging bricks

But the Apple TV ‘app’ is not compatible with fitness+! You have to have an Apple TV device gen4/5! Yes you can use your iPhone or iPad to do the workouts but why would anyone want to watch the workouts from tiny screens at home when most people have an airplay supported tv or other device! If you look at anyone who is using the fitness+ they are using it on there Apple TV devices to stream it on there tv!

Consider my subscription cancelled and will be carrying on with peloton digital who do have the option of airplay and even have an app on things like fire tv etc! I’m glad I just didn’t waste any money on this!

...this is my 2 cents (or pence!) worth.

I‘m not entirely sure what the big issue is with people wanting to AirPlay the workouts on a TV if I’m completely honest.

I use the workouts on my first gen iPad Air 2 and the screen is more than sufficient for me to see the workout along with the Apple Watch data on the left hand side.

I‘ve also done a couple of the treadmill workouts - I just take my iPad and stand it over the top of my treadmill display and it works fine. I really don’t see the necessity to workout in front of the TV all the time.

As long as the workouts work on an iPhone (ok, this WOULD be rather small) or an iPad then this works fine for me......

I'm sure you're being completely honest, but your post suggests a lack of empathy and imagination.

Try to imagine a person with normal or worse eyesight, with only an iPhone, owning no equipment like a treadmill, doing a workout on a mat where they are alternating between lying, kneeling, and standing up. For such a person, can you imagine the necessity to workout in front of the TV all the time? If you can imagine that, do you find such people unimportant? Since I'm describing myself, I hope you can see why your post is disturbing.

So many people in this thread are struggling with this failure of the product. Your input is "it's good enough for me so it should be good enough for others".

work around maybe?
Yes, this is what we're already doing. USB-C HDMI works, it's been verified, and those of us with iPad Pros that have USB-C are going this route. It's still BS that lightning to HDMI does NOT work, nor does AirPlay.

Who knows if the next update removes the ability to use USB-C to HDMI as well? I am on the one month trial and had set it up for a year, but now I'm second-guessing that and thinking of going month to month because I don't trust Apple to not gimp or remove the USB-C route as well, since they're not allowing it for lightning and AirPlay.
