Why are people rooting so hard for this to fail?
Because it's a distraction and waste of resources that could be better spent on improving products and services that Apple already has. They've neglected bug fixing and actual improvements to take on something that they clearly aren't prepared to do while ignoring customers who've already spent thousands of dollars on products that actually exist and serve a worthwhile purpose.

For an additional $ 500 you will get the snorkel accessory...

Maybe it was for a brief time in spring 2020 when gyms were closed, lol

The most popular usecases for VR right now are enthusiast gaming and porn, two things Apple won't care about

Not at all, but nice try at making a gotcha lol. PC's had no precedent. They turned analog work (office documents, art, etc) into digital and changed the world. Same with smartphones and app stores. That's why they were successful.

VR/AR is just taking an existing digital precedent (iOS) and putting it in a gimmicky UI/UX wrapper that's subpar because it's physically strapped to your head and blinds you and also costs three thousand ****ing dollars lol

This will bomb hard- I wish this website allowed banbets lol I will bet my account that this product will bomb

Every VR product since the 80's has failed.
The most popular apps in VR are social apps.

Anyone failing to realize this doesn't understand VR. Anyone believing that a new product category must be an iPhone level launch also doesn't understand the tech industry.

As for PCs, they started off well as a work device but were niche for many, many years in the home. People just didn't see a need.

Apple needs to create something like their version of Unreal Engine 5 to create games and content for this AR Headset except make it easy to use and also do not have it compiling shaders for 5 minutes every 20 seconds. Apple should also create a declarative API for RealityKit 3.0 that works like SwiftUI.

VRchat and all those metaverse scams will never be mainstream. Nobody wants to strap something to their head and have their ears ache after 40 minutes. Again, headset-based products will always fail.

IMO the next iphone-tier product is going to be AI related, and Apple's AI is bottom tier. They're not prepared.

I think it’s just this forum. It’s the same before any big release. The iPod and iPhone were both getting comments like these and then they came and changed the world.

Now I’m not saying this headset will do this but maybe people should wait and see before passing judgement?

Gimme 360 night vision and maybe we'll talk. This thing better have something that actually improves quality of life, 'cause they're not gonna get by (or "get buy", more accurately) on games in a world where Meta's got like 99% of profitable development wrapped up.

Apple is preparing to unveil its AR/VR "mixed" reality headset at WWDC in June, and the company is working to create appealing app experiences to encourage people to adopt the device. Apple is working on dedicated sports, gaming, wellness, and collaboration apps for the device, reports Bloomberg.

Apple has been working with a select number of gaming developers to help them update their existing content for mixed reality, and Apple will also have a robust set of tools available for creating AR/VR experiences.

Yeah I'll believe it when I see it. Apple is completely out of touch with the game industry and had pretty much burned every bridge with game developers over the last five years. If they can't fix Mac Gaming what makes you think Apple Reality will be different?

Plus, at $3000, no one outside of VR tech reviewers and the most hardcore VR users are gonna buy this thing since there's been no indication it can be used with PCVR. The majority of VR users will get a Quest 2 or a PSVR 2, and the most hardcore are looking at Pimax headsets or the new Bigscreen Beyond.

iPod and mp3's/digital music was a very recognized "next big thing" moment and people knew it was the future

iPhone was an expensive nothingburger until the 3G model + app store, then it took off and changed the world

I just don't see a VR/AR product changing the world. All of them so far have failed.

"Never" is a terrible bet to make in the world of technology. Do you believe that headsets will never get smaller, that aching problems will never be solved? Because these are very tractable problems.

Quoted for truth.

TBH,I also find it hard to believe this will be a huge success, looking at all the other VR/AR attempts which others have done. Apple is also very late to this party...

OTOH, for VR to work, you really need the horsepower to be able to display the images right, and maybe Apple thinks now finally that time has come with the M3?

I also still give Apple benefit of the doubt in that they might have really found the great way to implement it.
Similar to iPod and iPhone. Just listing the specs and features does not work, it's about the whole experience.

Apple is planning to adapt iPad apps for the headset, and users will be able to access existing App Store content through the 3D interface of the device. Apple-designed apps such as Safari, Calendar, Contacts, Home, Files, Messages, Notes, Photos, Music, Reminders, and other built-in apps will be optimized for the device. Multiple apps will be able to be run at one time, and there will be a geolocation aspect for swapping between apps when the user is in different rooms.

A Fitness+ app will allow users to exercise while watching the Fitness+ instructor in a virtual reality setting, and there will be a Health app for guiding users through meditations with graphics, sounds, and voice-overs. With Apple's deeper push into sports, there will be a focus on immersive viewing experiences for MLB and MLS content, plus there will be a dedicated TV app for watching videos in virtual reality environments.

There is a dedicated FaceTime experience that will use Memoji-like avatars and virtual meeting rooms, and Apple is designing a Books app for reading in virtual reality. A Camera app will be able to take images from the headset's cameras, and a version of Freeform will be adapted to a 3D interface for working on collaborative projects with others.

Apple has been working with a select number of gaming developers to help them update their existing content for mixed reality, and Apple will also have a robust set of tools available for creating AR/VR experiences.

The AR/VR headset is expected to be priced at around $3,000, and Apple is not planning for it to sell well to begin with. In fact, the company is expecting sales of approximately one million units in the first year, which is low for an Apple device.

Apple employees have expressed concerns about the usefulness of the headset given its price point. Some have questioned whether the device is a is a "solution in search of a problem" and not "driven by the same clarity" as other Apple devices.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in early April that the AR/VR headset is the "last hope" for persuading investors that AR/VR devices will become the "next star product in consumer electronics." Other devices from companies like Meta have lacked appealing software, and this is a major hurdle that Apple will need to overcome.

To get people to purchase the mixed reality headset, Apple will need to convince users that the software experiences are worth it. That will require compelling first-party experiences as well as innovative third-party apps from developers.

This is the first Kudos devise from Apple for a long while, whilst expensive, it's surprising what people pay for Kudos, I expect Apple to knock it out the park and sell at least 10 million 😊

You know, with all those snorkel images, maybe you could pretend you are underwater with fishes. You could like swim around your living room. Cool.

VRchat and all those metaverse scams will never be mainstream.

HBO made a very popular documentary on VRChat called We Met in Virtual Reality that was reviewed overwhelmingly positively.

Excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter: "watching We Met in Virtual Reality, you very quickly notice that the two people cuddling have horns and a tail and that the airplane they seem to be sitting on doesn’t exist. The young woman with pink hair talking about her suicide attempt is laying underneath the stars, but until she laments that the clouds aren’t moving, you could almost forget that they’re virtual as well. And when the deaf ASL instructor talks about losing his brother during COVID and lights a virtual Japanese lantern in his honor, there’s nothing synthetic about the emotions you feel."

Nobody wants to strap something to their head and have their ears ache after 40 minutes. Again, headset-based products will always fail.

I was playing Half Life Alyx for four hours last night with no discomfort. After a while I forgot I was even wearing a headset.

Have you even tried VR?
