damn I know I’m an optimistic/positive person for the most part lol, but I can’t be the ONLY one that’s hyped to see what Apple has in store. I mean, I know all of you wishing/hoping it fails will be glued to your screen and devouring every morsel of info on this thing— but it would be nice to see even a little enthusiasm lol.

I think their presentation is going to be sick and it’ll probably function very well. but the price and the battery situation make it seem like it will be a no-buy from me at first.

I have a feeling these will really need to get to 8K per eye before many would consider a headset to be a replacement for a computer. That is what it would take to achieve something close to retina resolution. I am really curious how close to that the 4K screens will feel. Regardless I’m excited to pick this up. Dreamed about a real AR system since I was a kid.

This is going to bomb so hard.

Hmm where have I heard that before?

Meditation, maybe… but who wants to exercise with this on their face?
Why. Not? Quest 2 is bigger and bulkier and i use it to exercise all the time 🤷‍♂️🤷 VR is so much fun and so immersive ya forget your’e even wearing it and it takes exercising at home to the next level.

Ah yes, another ski googles render.

People equating the launch of this thing to the Apple Watch release and its eventual success is pure nonsense.
People are equating it with a true wearable- the Apple Glasses. In that context the watch comparison makes sense. However this headset is more like a computer. Even Mac sales wouldn’t look like success compared to Apple Watch units moved.

What is the value on typing advice or mocking potential product launch failures for any company let alone one that refines, refines, refines all before launching and eventually becoming the profit leader in these IoT markets that include the Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad, iPhone, headphones never mind the driving force for OEMs to mimic with the MacBooks, small form factor Mac mini, etc?

The real use case I can see for them is telepresence. Combined with Lidar you really would feel like you're there, not like this phony baloney 3d stuff we have now.

On Ballmer, he's the guy who could have bankrupted an effective Monopoly. Genius business guy this one....

4K is rare for PC usage, so 1080p is the bar to hit, which is about 40 pixels per degree.

If this headset has 100 degrees field of view, then it hits that bar, though it's rumored to be wider, so probably not. Also have to account for optical distortions - will need more R&D to truly solve that.

HBO made a very popular documentary on VRChat called We Met in Virtual Reality that was reviewed overwhelmingly positively.

Excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter: "watching We Met in Virtual Reality, you very quickly notice that the two people cuddling have horns and a tail and that the airplane they seem to be sitting on doesn’t exist. The young woman with pink hair talking about her suicide attempt is laying underneath the stars, but until she laments that the clouds aren’t moving, you could almost forget that they’re virtual as well. And when the deaf ASL instructor talks about losing his brother during COVID and lights a virtual Japanese lantern in his honor, there’s nothing synthetic about the emotions you feel."

I was playing Half Life Alyx for four hours last night with no discomfort. After a while I forgot I was even wearing a headset.

Have you even tried VR?

I've been involved in VR circles mainly in experimental animation and indie gaming since 2015

It's a niche, always will be. Alyx was and still is the only "killer app" and it's tied to one aging hardware platform

Theres legitimate professional usecases for it like in hospice care and burn victims, 360 degree porn, or for architectural visualization. But as a mainstream social media-based consumer device, lol. It's not happening. And if it does, it'll plateau hard like the iPad. AR has a better chance at surviving and being innovative, but once again, nobody wants to strap a stupid box to their face.

Like i said the next big thing, like iphone-tier world changing thing, is AI content and Apple better have plans for that

You know what's really scary? I'll bet you Apple's presentation is so slick people will actually want this stupid thing and buy it!

Crazy, I know.
They'll buy it, because it will be unique, exclusive and carry a lot of kudos,
I'm not a VR type of guy, but I can see myself using it, my partner could have a dream holiday every week and we could see many places we haven't seen in real life, as would the kids, not to mention games....but 3k is a bit too much for me, that's the real problem for mass appeal, but Apple will sell at least 10 mil in the first year

Seriously. Apple is designing a Books app for this. Of all the software they could do. They’re focused on reading with a headset on.

Imagine you're on a trip for work. You put on your goggles, and you're in your kid's room, where you then read them a book and tell them good night. I'm sure a lot of business travelers would spend a lot of money to be able to do that with their kids each night, and be around them more in general. My dad would have benefitted from having these and spending time with my daughter in the few months she was alive before he passed. I'm sure we can come up with use cases that would allow connections like this...just because you can't see it doesn't mean that there aren't reasons these will be useful.

There are a lot of ways this could make people's lives better if it's done right. Apple has the potential to do that, if they recapture some of the old magic that seems to be lacking lately.

You can't keep using terms like "never" and "always" like you're omniscient. It invalidates your arguments.

anyone who hasn’t seen snazzy labs video about the headset absolutely should.
Even if you don’t think the product will be a success, you should watch it, he breaks everything down very neatly.

I can do whatever I want, and I mentioned earlier that I'll happily do a banbet and put my account on the line here because I am that confident that this product will underwhelm sales-wise

People dont want to put **** on thier face just to use a larger, gestural version of iOS

What's your setup then? What's your PC and what HMD do you use?

My guy seriously just called PC "aging hardware platform" lmao

Unless you're talking about the Valve Index which spoiler: It's not tied to the Index. Any VR headset can play the game. You just gotta connect it to a PC.

Annnnnd you officially lost all credibility.

I support the health decision. 👍

Sports could be good if implemented well and supported by pro leagues to offer subscription services for “on the sideline” experiences.

Gaming? Yeah, sure… that makes sense to create immersive gaming opportunities. Pokémon go was/is a big hit, and can you imagine it with AR goggles? Pretty cool.

This is reminding me a lot of the launch of the first Apple Watch.
Tuns and tuns of things being thrown at the wall but if this thing succeeds, it’s not gonna be till version two or three.
And I expect over the years a lot of the stuff that’ll become considered nonsense will be ditched, just like most of the glaringly stupid things about early watchOS
Remember when the watch came out they thought sharing your heart beat would be a big deal. It wasn't great until they finally hard pivoted to a health and fitness device and now it's great. My sense is no one knows why this AR thing exists.

This is going to bomb so hard.

Of course it will.

Just like every other Apple product has bombed hard, as so many people here predicted in the past.

As with other Apple products released, it will be fun going over these comments in the future.

This is just a list of the stock iPhone apps, but on your face.

If that’s what to expect then it doesn’t sound particularly inspired.

Also Memoji!! These things just won’t die will they. I’ve no idea what Apple sees in having avatars that make you look like a child.
The teens like them....

If it looks anything like the Nreal glasses I am buying on day 1!

But I am a Developer too!

I'm not sure how old you are -- but you could also argue the same about VR. Take a trip to the 80's and even mid 90's and you will see that by 1997, outside of a few arcades, VR died right then and there, and it has been trying to come back ever since, but seems to be experiencing the same thing. Mainstream consumers just aren't interested.

Reminds me of all the talk of Fusion -- 10 years out, 10 years out, 10 years out.... Yet still in development

I know you're probably gonna try to talk about Oculus and Failbook, but look what happened with PSVR -- and Gaming is a huge use case for it.
PSVR2 is selling badly. PSVR1 sold great and sony probably did well. But they didnt support it and most people dont want to get burned again.
