I can do whatever I want, and I mentioned earlier that I'll happily do a banbet and put my account on the line here because I am that confident that this product will underwhelm sales-wise

People dont want to put **** on thier face just to use a larger, gestural version of iOS
You know what I'm saying. "You can't do X" means you can't have people take you seriously.

Your confidence is misplaced; you haven't done enough research into VR/AR. At least do the homework before you get so sure of yourself.

I think Apple can be successful if they

- partner with a fashionable eyewear brand AND release some lightweight glasses.

- unveil some amazing first party VR games

- get the price point low.

I can’t see them doing any of the above.

No one wants an iMessage terminal glued to their face.

damn I know I’m an optimistic/positive person for the most part lol, but I can’t be the ONLY one that’s hyped to see what Apple has in store. I mean, I know all of you wishing/hoping it fails will be glued to your screen and devouring every morsel of info on this thing— but it would be nice to see even a little enthusiasm lol.

I think their presentation is going to be sick and it’ll probably function very well. but the price and the battery situation make it seem like it will be a no-buy from me at first.

That has happened with every product Apple has released over the years.

It's like people lock what little imagination they possess away in a closet and instead spend enormous amounts of time coming up with myriad reasons why upcoming Apple products will bomb. I guess it feels good.

iPod, iMac, iPhone, iPad, Watch... all doomed before launch according to many people here.

Apple's upcoming AR device is in good company with the above Apple products.

PSVR2 is selling badly. PSVR1 sold great and sony probably did well. But they didnt support it and most people dont want to get burned again.
I think VR is dead... It is all about see through glasses and AR now. I think Apple is going in the right direction!

I wouldn't say VR is dead. Rather, I would say Apple's thrust will be AR, and VR will come along for the ride.

In any event, Apple is certainly going in the right direction.

Quite the opposite. VR is alive and the investment for MR devices is increasing. Mass market seethrough AR is further out and requires VR to already be a mature technology.

Why are people rooting so hard for this to fail?

Because this is not something I want Apple to divert resources and engineering toward. I really had little opinion on it (other than disinterest) until rumors started coming out about Apple releasing muted software updates so they could focus on this thing instead. I don't want them to prioritize a product I don't give a crap about. I also don't want these to replace other products, as many were also predicting, since this is not how I use tech. I've also seen what happens when a company (Meta) puts all their resources into AR/VR. It's a direction I'm not interested in seeing Apple go in.

I guess to many here I'm just a "hateful MR user who thought the iPhone would fail" (I didn't--granted I was 8 years old when the iPhone came out, but my opinion at the time was that it was the coolest thing ever), but some of us do have actual reasons besides blind hatred for not being enthusiastic about this rumored product and not wanting to see Apple make it a priority.

It certainly might underwhelm but that is not the same as saying it will bomb hard. Pick one

"Sports, Gaming, and Fitness" I could not care less about. And I doubt that people who do care about these would be willing to pay $3k.

I can't imagine doing exercise with VR goggles on (that are connected to some battery somewhere). The various exercise leaders in Apple Fitness on TV or iPhone work well for me, as I am not holding onto a TV or phone while I bike or do Yoga. I know: A headset isn't something you hold. But doing a 30 minute bike routine at difficult levels causes immense sweat WHILE doing it, and VR goggles would be a mess and slide. For Yoga, I can't imagine doing that wearing goggles. Aside from the loss of comfort, they'd flat out get in the way of some of the moves. But, Apple would know this, so I can't believe the rumor about Fitness would be true.

Gaming and exploration, ...you bet. (Well, I don't do that now with the available options, but gaming with VR headset naturally makes sense to me.)

What about mimicking another company (of which I forgot the name) that makes VR/AR glasses for computer monitor. Tech reviewers have said they work quite well, as they are simply in the form and weight of glasses.
I could see that as something that would be in Apple's bulleted list of features for such a thing. You'd have your virtual 32" monitor or virtual multiple monitors in front of you, showing the Mac environment while you worked.

With a new platform, it's essential for Apple to make developers fall in love with the product. To achieve this, they should focus on integrating features that developers value and encourage them to work in AR/VR.

A great starting point would be to provide full support for Xcode and Terminal (including Homebrew). Additionally, offering 3D tmux, the ability to broadcast multiple screens from external machines, and attaching them to the AR world would be beneficial. Seamless integration of MacOS apps with 3D window management and the automatic conversion of 2D apps with 3D graphics into "holographic" versions without altering the app would also be advantageous. Furthermore, ensuring that keyboard shortcuts are available for all functions is crucial.

With these features, developers can effortlessly navigate the virtual world by simply turning the Digital Crown, making the open office less distracting. If developers find themselves more productive in AR/VR, they will be more likely to create apps that attract the rest of the world to the platform. This, of course, assumes that Apple can make the technology borderline affordable.

Why. Not? Quest 2 is bigger and bulkier and i use it to exercise all the time 🤷‍♂️🤷 VR is so much fun and so immersive ya forget your’e even wearing it and it takes exercising at home to the next level.
Interesting to know it's not as crazy as it seems to me. When I exercise I sweat a ton, and I don't like getting sweat on my electronics. Also I like to be unencumbered as possible. To each his own. Apple has largely done a great job with the Watch's exercise features, so no doubt they will put a lot of thought into it.

Apple needs to work on their 3D content creation tools too! I mean if you look at Unreal Engine 5! Damn! RealityKit did not receive that much love at the last WWDC but I think it was because the AR/VR Glasses were not released and Apple did not want to give away any secrets. SceneKit has not been shown any love for almost 4 or 5 years now.

This is just a list of the stock iPhone apps, but on your face.

If that’s what to expect then it doesn’t sound particularly inspired.

Also Memoji!! These things just won’t die will they. I’ve no idea what Apple sees in having avatars that make you look like a child.
And the stock iPhone apps are mostly a list of stock Mac Apps, but for a pocketable device.
Apple making most of their apps usable for a different form factor seems pretty obvious to me. Sure, some apps are better suited for some form factors than others. You can edit spreadsheets on an iPhone, but it obviously isn’t as suited to the task as a device with a larger screen. I don’t expect a headset to be the best device for reading books, but it’s not like it will take a huge amount of work to port.

VRchat and all those metaverse scams will never be mainstream. Nobody wants to strap something to their head and have their ears ache after 40 minutes. Again, headset-based products will always fail.

IMO the next iphone-tier product is going to be AI related, and Apple's AI is bottom tier. They're not prepared.
My VR headset has excellent audio, and doesn’t touch my ears at all. Why would my ears ache? Well, besides the hoards of screaming kids in many multiplayer VR apps…

I actually find the headset becomes uncomfortable faster with more passive experiences. When I’m doing something more intense it’s easier to ignore the headset.

I love this line up of apps. Watching a movie on a plane, fully reclined, alone makes it worth $3000. People underestimate Apple all the time. This is going to be a huge success even bigger than Apple envisions for the first year. I will be ordering day one that it is available.

From what I can tell, VR is currently immensely more popular than transparent XR devices (Though admittedly I haven’t seen any sales figures for those devices).

Not to say that is a predictor of future success—iPods vastly outsold the iPhone during the first few year of its availability.

I don’t wear an Apple Watch, and I don’t go complaining in comment threads about the Watch that I wish Apple wouldn’t divert resources towards it.
