How about controling Super Mario with a game controller but playing it as if you were looking through his eyes? That would be fun.

I did play a platform game in Oculus VR like that but it wasn’t fun after initial impressions. I enjoyed Nintendo console attached to CRT television more than that. I like being free from any constraints put on my face. I hate when I had to finally wear reading glasses that was sad enough for me.

Good luck with that. I don’t see devs really focusing on a device that sells for 3k with small user groups. They hardly focus on iPad PRO apps as it is. The RIO must be not profitable

Apple also can barely get new games onto Arcade

I don’t wear an Apple Watch, and I don’t go complaining in comment threads about the Watch that I wish Apple wouldn’t divert resources towards it.

Yet you feel the need to complain about the complainers. How about practicing what you preach and ignoring them?

By the way: I hope this thing fails and no one gets to enjoy it. 😁

Apple headsets will sell alot, since there are millions of devoted fans, and thousands of influencers on YouTube (much of them will be given the headset by Apple to sell and convince others) with their devoted fans as well. VR/AR headsets/glasses will catch on eventually once the tech/software/design/usefulness/price reaches a sweet spot.

I’m flummoxed about the types of software from Apple on the upcoming headset. I would assume this would be better suited to vertical markets, things like commercial aircraft mechanics or medical students… At the moment with Safari onboard it looks like it will be an expensive porn consumption device. ☹️

Well, given that sideloading is expected to be announced at WWDC…those apps can happen
Isn’t side-loading limited to devices currently on sale in markets that demand side-loading? As the first devices will be for commercial/developer purposes, limiting those to just the US can get them to a healthy level of sales without having to worry about side-loading for now.

What software would Apple be making for commercial aircraft mechanics or medical students?

I still think losing the NFL contract hurt them. Football with AR/VR in some form might be what got me and many others to buy. (Yes, soccer/football is bigger, but Americans pump up the Apple $$$.)
NFL football the way APPLE wanted to do it would have been great. The contract the NFL wanted Apple to sign would have hurt them more than not signing it.

That's the Apple first gen curse for ya. It takes a generation or two for a new Apple Product category to find it's footing and really see mass appeal. People forget the iPad didn't kick off until the iPad 2 a year later when it finally got cameras.
They DID sell 15 million in that first year, though. That was a pretty respectable kick off, especially for a device that started over $199.

When I read “sports” I read it more like a trainer or coach would be wearing them and the user would be wearing equipment with pockets that AirTags can be secured inside (tracking is one of their use cases) and it would end up being a more mobile version of what they currently have iPads on tripods for (that golf training app and the basketball app, both that do their work without the benefit of AirTags).

Instead of “come over here to the iPad”, the trainer goes to wherever the athlete is doing their repetitions and can enhance their feedback based on what info they’re getting from the headset.

Apple wouldn’t, third party companies like Airbus or Boeing or some airline would. The quicker they can get a new mechanic to be useful, the quicker the turnaround on routine daily maintenance and the longer the planes are in the sky making money. There’s a huge profit motive for the company that can sort this out and I would guess that relevant parties have access to prototype hardware.

That has happened with every product Apple has released over the years.

It's like people lock what little imagination they possess away in a closet and instead spend enormous amounts of time coming up with myriad reasons why upcoming Apple products will bomb. I guess it feels good.

iPod, iMac, iPhone, iPad, Watch... all doomed before launch according to many people here.

Apple's upcoming AR device is in good company with the above Apple products.
facts on facts on facts. had to change my ‘like’ to a ‘love’.

Oh wow, really?
I’m going to see what they actually announce, when they announce, if they announce…

Not convinced by these applications. The idea of a standalone headset which also functions as your phone is a bit much, especially with two-hour battery life.

Well, with AR/VR glasses aircraft mechanics could check to see the exact specifications for any particular aircraft and with the cameras on the headset they might be able to detect wear & tear that’s not quite yet visible and know the exact details on any given part, how much torque this particular bolt require, etc. For medical students I can imagine being able to virtually dissect human bodies with all the extra information on what the body parts are, examining different diseases. It could be an incredible learning tool. Entertainment isn’t the best use of Apple’s headset IMHO. 😵‍💫

Should Apple should release a device without built it apps? A majority of VR headset use today is for entertainment. Why should they ignore today's biggest VR/AR market while developing a new VR/AR platform, even if they think the usage of the platform will shift over time?

There are already high end VR devices for industry if those industries want to make custom software.

All the Apple strengths in one product.

I'm actually laughing out loud as I type this.

Reading the article it reminds me of Microsoft’s attempts to get into mobile before the iPhone. They had Windows, Windows was successful, by god we’re gonna cram Windows into everything whether it’s a good fit or not.

iOS has become increasingly like this. First the iPad, then the Mac, now AR. All just different versions of the iPhone, that make increasingly less sense.

I'm guessing this is what the future may look like.

Except the Apple one is supposed to have an external screen to show your expression, so in the future their false eyes will be looking at you. Much less creepy…

Probably one of the headline games for this will be the 8 year old Alien Isolation which just got an iPad release 16 months ago.

It's a shame Apple burnt its bridges with Valve otherwise Half Life Alyx would be amazing. Sadly even that - still the high-bar for VR gaming - is already 3 years old.
