It wasn't BS. I said that you started a thread that doesn't invite discussion. It just states an opinion. There's no room or invitation for discussion. All you did was post a troll thread, as you're obviously looking for attention.

Doesn't invite discussion? I stated an opinion. You can either agree or disagree and state your case. That's what a discussion is. This is not a troll thread. I feel very strongly about this, and I'm simply backing up my opinion. I think you are being absurd right now trying to make this out to be anything but another discussion thread.

I sure am glad that Apple consists of educated businessmen and doesn't base their decisions on opinions of the OP :p

I'm going to end this here, as even with my stated opinion, I don't actually wish to derail your thread.

Interesting to see how many people have no issues simply waiting for the next iPhone. Because this is a very pro-Apple forum I partially expected it. I still feel very strongly that asking a consumer to wait over 24 months opens up room for the competition. I'll be demoing an SIII as soon as it comes to AT&T.

The Vergecast for this week touches upon current iPhone users seriously contemplating a jump to another OS at roughly the 30:00 mark.

Not one bit. I both don't have the time to sit and respond to all the negative comments nor do I have any desire to do so either. People can take all the shots they want. I know I speak for others.

What others? Or you mean just yourself?

There does seem to be a sense of entitlement on these forums amongst some. "I'm your customer, I have the money, do what I want".

I was an early adopter of the 4 - partly because my 3G had water damage and became very eccentric when I updated the OS. If that hadn't been the case, I'd have probably waited a while. With the looming update, I'm not so sure what I'll do this time. The 4 is perfectly fine for my needs and I still like the design. My contract was up early and so I moved to a sim-only deal to save £20 per month. My intention, whenever I do come to update my phone, is to buy from Apple sim-free. If I can hold out a few months more, then I will. I doubt I'll manage to keep it going until the 2013 model is released though. All depends on what features are added. If there's nothing compelling for me, then I'll wait.

My brother and his fiancée are probably more typical non-geek users of the iPhone - bought the 3G a few months after the 3GS came out and are only just updating now. So they really don't care about updating - they kept the 3G for 2.5 years- until nearly 4 years after it was first released.

No, he doesn't. You can count me in too. I know of other iPhone users that feel the same way. Instead of bitching on a forum we'll choose a different phone.

I really do believe that Android is a better home for those who want to change phones frequently. I'm not saying that it's wrong to want to change your phone - everyone has different priorities - but Android does give far more variety in device, simply because there are more manufacturers, who are on a totally different business model from Apple. That means more phones changing more often. I understand that many of those wanting a new iPhone design would maybe prefer to stay with iOS and are annoyed that Apple aren't playing ball; they are having to face the hard reality that Apple won't be changing from their 2+ year design refresh cycle. If the stretched screen rumours are true, then not sure if that counts!?

For me, the Apple ecosystem suits me fine and I can't see myself moving anytime soon. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Computers and smartphones are apples and oranges. When you purchase a laptop or desktop, the idea and hope is that it will last you a while. (At least 3 years.) When you purchase a smartphone, you are likely going to upgrade your phone once your contract has expired.
That's your problem right there. Apple doesn't force you to do anything. YOU are forcing yourself into not being able to get any phone you want at any time, by naively buying into subsidized two year contracts and locked down phones. Smart money is on unlocked phones and cheap sim only contracts.

For people like me, phones and computers are definitely not apples and oranges. They're very comparable. I buy them, like anything really, with the idea to use them as long as possible or as is viable. But then again, I don't need a new phone on a regular basis to keep me happy. Even a 2 dollar cydia tweak can make the day of a simpleton like me.

All I'm getting at is that I feel 24 months is a good time frame to refresh/redesign/innovate the iPhone.

What are you even arguing about? Despite a hiccup last year, Apple IS on a 24 month schedule.

'Wow'? Really? I'm so tired of my iPhone 4. Sexy? That was good for a laugh.

I think the iPhone is long overdue for a refresh with respect to hardware.

I'll pm my address. Just send it on over.

Personally, I hope the next iPhone looks just very similar, the glass is far superior in design to metal or plastic.

Oh boy. Again, apples and oranges. You don't purchase a car or television with the intent on upgrading them in a few years. With a smartphone, I believe most consumers are looking to upgrade once their contracts are up. (Often times two years.)
Seriously, you need to relax. Take a breath, go outside, play a non-electronic game, get laid. Then the extra 3 months you are worried about, if it happens at all, will not be such a big deal.

I used my previous phone for 3 years. Had no reason to change, because I liked it. Only reasons I changed: it was dying physically, and I decided to move to a smartphone.

Glass superior to metal or plastic? What a joke. Seriously.

Far superior. The one thing I don't like about Apple's metal products is the scratches. And the iphone 3 feels like a toy. As do all the plastic fantasticks out there.

Obviously, this is subjective. The 4 was the first smartphone I had any interest in using. So, I am.

The glass backing of the iPhone 4/4S is slippery and susceptible to cracking compared to plastic or metal. It's one of the few features of the iPhone that I loathe. There is nothing 'superior' about it.

It certainly looks nicer than most of the competition, based various opinions (not just mine). The way I look at it if I crack/scratch the back of my phone, I waltz into Apple and they replace the backing for $30. If I crack/scratch the back of my HTCSamsungMotorollaLG, unless it is on the battery door, I get to live with it. If it is on the battery door, the replacement cost for an OEM part is about the same.

I am honestly not any more scared about busting up my iPhone than I am my GNex. They both have the potential to look like utter crapped if dropped just right. Spiderwebbed glass (back of iPhone) looks no worse than deep gashes in plastic (GNex). IMO of course.

I've never had a crack or scratch on my 4. I've never NOT had a crack on a plastic phone or massive scratches on metal surfaces, like my Touch. And I have virtually always used cases on my phones, bumper on the 4.

I think you are paranoid because the internet told you to be. And clearly, you shouldn't have bought the 4/4s if you don't like it. What, following the crowd?

I remember the issues with the 3G/S. Not sure if they are STILL an issue, but micro cracks would develop around the charging and speaker ports. Sometimes around the sleep/wake button as well. I have all but forgotten at this point.

I don't think the glass back looks any nicer than most of the competition. Plus the backing is so slippery that personally I find it impossible to use. Hence why I must use a case. I think the glass backing was a poor design choice however it certainly didn't not hurt Apple's sales.

If necessary I'm sure you could replace the backing of your GNex for little money.

That's why I said it was an opinion. They are mixed, but there are a lot of people that like it.

How? Do it myself? Send it somewhere? Am I getting OEM replacements or something shipped as a Chinese knockoff? Replacing the back of your iPhone is as easy as walking into an Apple store and lightening your wallet by $30. Can't even DIY that for a whole lot cheaper than that. The convenience of a quick repair at the Apple store is irrefutably better in my eyes.

I never had a crack with my 3G iPhone. Plus the curved backing was much nicer to hold in my hand versus the glass backing of my iPhone 4.

I like my iPhone 4 very much. I never said otherwise (glass backing aside). Please don't say stupid condescending things to me. And I'd like to drop this side discussion of the glass backing. It's irrelevant to the original post I made in this thread.

How about a 5 second Google search. Not sure what model you have but I found the Verizon version backing for $15. I don't think it's an issue to find a replacement for any smartphone backing that is removable.
