Very clear to me. The narrower one defines the limit of equality the more there is disparity. The broader the definition the less there is inequality.

See above. It is equality in treatment. Smaller devs get perks, eg 15% vs 30%, that bigger devs don’t. Larger devs may command more attention. But none of that means that devs don’t get the same rights across the board.
I feel that’s contradictory, and while your point about the small business program is valid Apple only brought it around because of the allegations.

Apple wont lose. All the people in the position of judgement use their products and want their favoritism. Apple is basically a church now-a-days.

I truly hope you're wrong. I love the work that Apple does, both hardware and software. Over the last decade they've become increasingly controlling and manipulative. Once Apple sells something that's it; they've sold it and someone else owns it. They need to accept that their users have the right to control their technology.

People need to read the article and even the MacrRumors title is a misrepresentation of the truth. In the article it says flat out that developers can apply for the credential that gives the access to the apis in question And that the same goes for CarPlay and various other sensitive apis.

Because people should need to ask permission to use userland focused APIs in competitive software markets so Apple can pick and choose winners and losers. Goodness me.

Completely and utterly wrong. Apple is a company not an individual. This is blatantly anti-competitive. Greedy Apple playing favorites.
You know that an individual can be a company, it is called a sole proprietorship. So if my one man company develops a new method to produce optical circuits for a cellphone, you are saying that if i choose to license that technology to only one or two companies then i am being anti-competitive. Are you expecting me to give away that technology? My company would be bankrupt and out of business if i did that, so how is that “fair” to me.

It’s a bad API, because my camera glitches off/on everytime I swipe over a slide over app, revealing I’m not paying attention anymore

Yep. We should all be rooting for apple to lose. I know I am.
I definitely hope they don’t lose, I do not want the App Store to become some malware ridden place because people feel that apple shouldn’t charge for a platform they built and shouldn’t be in control of the App Store. Apple is not perfect by no means but they provide a superior experience because of the control they have, there’s always Android for those that are unhappy.

This isn't a big deal, because (as you can see) the entitlement is right there. It's not like zoom used a private api and was able to bypass the app store rules re: using private APIs.

Obviously it would be better if it was actually documented etc, but this is a different environment.

If you think Android is better then go use Android. When you search for anything you're flooded with junk apps, even on the play store.

Are you a developer?

The company I work for uses a certain software package. As a trusted partner, We have access to APIs which are undocumented and not available to all. This is because our use case demands it.

Without the API access, and comms directly with their development teams it wouldn’t be possible for us to use their software solution.

As a personal side gig I have a watch app. There’s no way I’d expect to get the same level of access as a major company, particularly with regards to accessing APIs which I don’t need.

An important rule of any secure system is that people have access to only what they need and nothing more.
Split screen API isn't a security issue. Apple has always claimed that there are no "trusted partners" and that all devs are treated equally. If that's not the case, it's discouraging to devs.

I already knew the payment processing rules were bent for a few big companies like Amazon in the past. However, I think they are fully in the legal right to do this.

Pretty sure it’s a big deal when Apple execs have told senate committees no such privileges exist.

So you get unequal access? So that’s the opposite of what Apple says that App Store is to developers. A playing level field to compete. If it’s not playing field it kinda dings at the reasoning of the App Store. Another purpose of the App Store is for secure apps. If the Zoom app passes the same security checks of other apps why do only they have special API access? I wouldn’t call Zoom a trusted partner after that undocumented web server stunt they pulled a few years ago.

But does FaceTime even have access to this api? I know that whenever I move to another app, my camera goes off - people frequently ask what I’m doing because “they can’t see me any more”. Maybe Zoom are trialling a new feature that has yet to be released to the general public?
I’d rather use Zoom than FaceTime.

Lol Fair is not always equal I have two children one is older and has shown that they are responsible so they get a bigger allowance the other is young and impulsive so their allowance is smaller. I’m not playing favorites rather I’m dealing with my children according to what they have earned, as a parent that is my right. Apple built and manages the App Store so they cant regulate it lol? Epic is the greedy one they recently cut their fee from 30% to 12% how Nobel right? No! they have been losing money since 2018 in their store! So taking less money means nothing they are already hemorrhaging, but the apple store…they were making about 350million a year just off fortnite so they said screw this we want more money but let us make it look
Like we’re fighting for the little guy it’s about
The little developers and the consumer LOL,sure epic!! So Apple releases the small business program that takes only 15% from businesses that make under 1 million a year is epic happy lol No their response is "It's a great progressive improvement for these smaller developers, but a cynical ploy to divide and conquer iOS developers” What!! I don’t know why im spending so much time on this lol I just hate how some are siding with Epic When they suck beyond belief lol

Do you have a link to where apple said that? I’d like to read it.
So I found this of rev.com https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/big-tech-antitrust-hearing-full-transcript-july-29
Tim Cook is asked do Apple apps operating the the App Store follow the same rules as every other apps. He said,
“We have 60 apps on the app store. They go through the same rules that the 1.7 million do.”
Now this Twitter thread pointed the Clips does not ask permission for access for the camera or the photos app. It just has it. It’s downloadable app the can do what other apps can’t. So this would appear contrary to Tim’s statement.

Why should apple not be allowed to pick winners and losers? Seriously asking.
Because that is anti-competitive behavior and as such is likely against the law. It certainly was against the law for Microsoft to advantage their own browser over competitors.

Or are you asking for a moral rationale? Something more pragmatic?

Second, if only the big folks like Zoom get privileged access, it skews the ability for companies to become big in the first place. Google was founded in 1998. Imagine it had instead started in 2008, just a decade later, in a world where companies like Apple decide who gets privileged access and who doesn't. No way would they have been able to grow the way they did.

Zoom was founded in 2011 and the software launched in 2013.
So they started even after the iPad.

Why hasn’t Microsoft been called anti-competitive and forced to release Microsoft Access in Office for Mac so that it would “fair” competition with Microsoft Office for Windows?

I don’t understand how it is against the law. It’s not the same situation as Microsoft - they were not picking and choosing third party winners and losers - they were favoring their own browser by leveraging an existing monopoly.

Would it be against the law for Apple to enter into a contract with Zoom, say, making zoom the official video meeting app for ios and giving it special privileges? Why?

Is it against the law for Apple to require videoconference apps to show them their source code or to enter into special contractual arrangements so that Apple can make sure that that background camera access is not being misused before granting them an entitlement permitting background camera access? If so, why?

Businesses pick and choose ”winners and losers” all the time. Businesses are permitted to enter into exclusive contracts and agreements with other companies. They are allowed to pick downstream retailers as authorized. They are allowed to enter into interoperability agreements. So what makes this different?

Man based on all this anti consumer attitude by Apple it really should be a slam dunk easy choice for someone to swoop in and compete with them.

Android tablets are super popular for this reason right?
