so rather than be default they’d make ppl choose, and they all chose google anyway. and if apple made their own search engine we’d have lawsuits about forcing that as default.
lawyers need to fall back, let us keep google as default and let everyone keep making money

Bing can't compete because Bing sucks. Nadella has major sads about Microsoft failing to dominate another market. Microsoft's wasted effort there is part of the reason their domination has slipped in the last 20+ years. They failed to see the importance of mobile, then developed the crappy Windows Mobile OS. They failed to see just how bad their server software is and lost big time to Linux and other UNIX-based OSes. Now they are back to their old antics of domination through purchasing with this Activision purchase. F' M$.
MS is a 2.73T company, just behind Apple 2.88T. Not that bad for a company that has seeing their domination slipped in the last 20+ years.

All while they drastically increase prices and screw people with their master roadmap to obsolete products as quick as possible and maximize upgrade cycles.

Apples greatest innovation the past 10 years is that they mastered leveraging their ecosystem to offer bits and pieces of last years tech so that people are forced to upgrade products.

They could give out entry level phones for free and still make a ton of money with this google deal alone. More than most companies that exist.

I am still using iPhone 8, still working great, don't understand what you are talking about.

Maybe I am not thinking clearly as I am asking this from the Gym lol but how does Apple even know how many searches are conducted in Safari if they claim to be all about on device and privacy?
Maybe from users who have “share iPhone analytics” and “personalised ads” turned on.

Which is probably most users.

This whole story got me to finish de-Googling and switch to Duck Duck Go for search. Amazing what a superior product Google has but DDG is good enough and I haven’t looked back. I can live with good enough.
I have been changing default search engine to DuckDuckGo, i am happy.

DDG is my default search engine. But for certain things I daily find myself going back to Google, because simply put, it’s better. DDG is “good enough”, but not as good for deep dive digging and researching.

Exactly! Business is business. There's no bribe here.
So people think that paying premium to a newspaper to place your ad in the front page is also a bribe?
What's wrong with people's heads lately?
Just use random eye catching words to get attention, they have no idea what they are talking about.

Apple services chief Eddy Cue testified in the trial in October, and he said that Google is the iPhone's default search engine because it is the best option. "We make Google be the default search engine because we've always thought it was the best," Cue said. Apple has not been able to make changes to the arrangement because there is no "valid alternative."

Err… yeah. Because no one else has had the opportunity to catch up!

So we are the product? Can I get my cut of 36% when I purchase a new iPhone or Mac or iPad and use Safari?

That's why I use a PiHole to block ads...
do you know that macrumors is not making any money when you block adds using Pihole ?
would you be willing to pay monthly subscription to read contents of this web so that macrumors can pay their employees ?

Most of the people complaining about google's add business don't understand that we don't want to pay for services and we don't want websites to make money using adds either.
If you are using Pihole or any other add block add in then you shouldn't be visiting free websites and using free email services.

This is staggering. Basically, between iOS and Android, google clearly has a monopoly for mobile search. Still use google, but it’d be great if there were more competition, where the deck wasn’t so stacked in google’s favor at least.
Lol - changing a setting is … stacked ?

I’d pay .99 cents a month for sure I like their content.

This means every Apple users generate $70/user revenue every year for Google = $70b/anually.

We click on so many ads, for the advertisers to cough up that much dough. Depressing.

Apple basically sells YOU, the customers, to Google. So Apple customers suddenly became the product. That opens a clear conflict of interest for Apple. Will they really work hard to block ads, if Google pays them a bribe for showing those ads?

I do wish there were legitimate competitors to Google Search and Youtube, because monopolies aren't good in general but also because I want good privacy-focused options, even if I have to pay for it. But I also wonder if privacy-focused options can compete. Hope so.

First off, there is in no way a bribe; it's a business deal; an anti-consumer deal, but it's not a bribe.

Second, Apple doesn't block ads and they never have. They do block third-party trackers. If you want to block ads, you have to download an extension or block them on your network.

If all this eventually leads to Apple developing their own Search Engine, I will be switching from Google and DuckDuckGo immediately. I don't really see how regulators can see a stat like this and not try to kill the deal.

That is a sizable amount of money!
