Possibly.

It's also probably the only thing they had cheap enough not to run afoul of the various income tax laws about gifts

Apple is great and not great.

Anyone on the sales floor is paid peanuts.

My BF was making $15 an hour when he was on the sales floor. That's hardly peanuts

And they don't do commissions etc because it's not fair to the non sales staff

Is this horrible and cheap? Before I read the comments I just thought cool. Know what I except to receive from most retail jobs? Likely not much, plus it's just an extra. They are going to be seen as cheap unless they give out iPads.

Yeah, Apple is greedy in most ways. It's just a gift and sure better than nothing right?

You're right. People with your personality, needing to spread misery wherever you post, are poison. Don't make your depression everyone else's problem.

Yes. Suggest you have a look at the posting history of the poster I replied to.

Though I guess sarcasm is not for everyone..... Boo hoo.. This miserable individual gets annoyed when people don't read the ACTUAL story and accuse others of trolling.... Merry Xmas to you!

EDIT : please please watch YouTube or something to understand sarcasm! If you are going to follow me around the site and engage in debates based on sarcastic comments, wasting each other's time bud.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm

In the case above , a poster states apple gave away $15 million, any anyone who had a negative opinion is a troll and apple basher ?!?!. Given apple has 110 000 employees, and they are not all retail, and given the rrp is $100 (not what apple pays), I replied I'm a sarcastic manner questioning the maths involved ;) cause even if every employee was retail, and those headphones actually cost $100 to produce to be sold at no profit, it would cost 110 000 x 100 = 11 million.

Though, you are cool with his comment calling anyone who shares a negative opinion on this thread to be labelled a troll and apple basher? Maybe you are as you labelled me a sad misserable individual.

Happy to debate in the future , though let's remove the personal jibes. I'll drop using sarcasm if we debate again to remove any misunderstanding.

Have a good day mate!

Personally i would have preferred the cash... :D Gifts are all well and good, but u don't need other people to tell u what u should have.

Cash 'em instead, then they can spend it on themselves.

no Christmas bonuses?

at the hospital my mother works at they always have a Christmas party and everyone gets to pick a number to enter the room one by one. there's a big table with stuff to pick one item from. my mum got two iPhones, two ipad and a laptop over the years.
Now I know why the US health care system is overly expensive as ****.

I am soooo glad I'm not dating any of you thankless cretans. "Couldn't you have at least gotten me the top of the line model? The only reason you even bought this for me is because it was on sale. Next time, just give me money. I know what you earn, you could have just put a fat wad of bills in my stocking and not insulted me with this. It'll be obsolete in a few years anyway!"

"Oh, and your sweater's ugly."

It seems there's not a story on MacRumors where the comment thread doesn't make me hate humanity a little bit more... I used to think the CNN comments were depressing...
My sentiments exactly. This forum has devolved into a cesspool of negativity and incessant whinging.

I have put so many people on the ignore list that I can't understand some of the replies here–the quotes are hidden.

That is a nice gift to give out worldwide. For a low level store employee in China that gift is probably equal in price to a week's wages. And it is a nice gift in the US. Everyone can always use another pair headphones to stick in a jacket or something like that. And an easy gift to re-gift.
And keep in mind that many employees will in fact get a Christmas bonus in cash. These gifts are typically extra to that.

I'm self-employed. The only thing I'm getting this year is a stern warning for grabbing my own bum at the office party.

That's nothing. I'm self-employed too, and my boss makes me sleep with him. But he did buy me an Apple Watch for my birthday, so it's not all bad.

Each December, Apple provides its employees with a special holiday gift to thank them for their contributions to the company and to celebrate the holiday season.

Employees have begun receiving their 2015 holiday gift from Apple, which consists of a set of black and red urBeats earphones from the Beats by Dr. Dre product lineup. Employees were not able to pick a color for their gifted earphones, but the packaging does have special wording: "Thank You 2015."

Apple's black and red urBeats headphones have a retail value of $99.95 and are being distributed to all of its employees around the world.

Last year, Apple employees received a custom Apple-branded Incase backpack, and in the years before that, employees have been gifted things like blankets, water bottles, hoodies, free apps, discounted iTunes gift cards, and more.

LOL! Retail Value! More like the original price...Nevermind...I know it's the thought that counts. Apple gift card would have been better just a suggestion. :D

Retail value and original price are the same thing...

Well I said NEVERMIND in my post followed by the THOUGHT THAT COUNTS. Since you brought it out, I will go ahead and finish my thought about this. When I said original price what I meant by that is the ORIGINAL price from the manufacturing value of the product. Since the giver is Apple and the product is owned by Apple then it only cost them couple cents worth of this gift. It's not like other company bought the item at retail value then giving this to their employees. Obviously rumor site like this will make this thing like a huge deal put on the retail value and put it on the front page. But then again it's the thought that counts not the value and obviously not the ORIGINAL VALUE of the gift.

Was not comparing to Retail, sorry. I was comparing to Corporate jobs in other Fortune 500 companies. As to comparing "apples to apples" (pun intended), find me a retail position where an employee bring as much profit to their company as an Apple Store retail employee. Now apply the ratio and see if you think Apple retail employees get a fair pay/benefits?

Agree that Apple retail employees get generally more than their counterparts - stock grants are very new by the way - but again is the pay "fair" for what they do and bring to the company ? They also do not get commission, another variable in the calculation and comparison of other retail employees final paycheck.

just dumb.

So you think the iPhone sells mainly because of the retail sales people? Give me a break. Just admit you were wrong and move on. In the retail world no big corp gives better compensation than Apple.

Why can't you Americans say "Apple Gifts Retail Employees With UrBeats Earphones for Christmas"

Who are you worried you'll offend?
Why jump to conclusions? Many people celebrate all kinds of holidays at this time of the year so accordingly it's a holiday gift. Why make it into something that it's not (a gift for some one specific holiday)?
Gifts can be insults too.
And how does that apply here?

A gift is one thing and something like a bonus is another, who is to say that both aren't in play in some way? And even if they aren't, doesn't mean that one vs the other is somehow horrible, either one is basically an addition to it all and more than nothing that many companies give (or basically don't give) and more than is part of employment (unless specifically specified somewhere).

Hey where I work (Fortune 20 company) employees get nothing for the holidays.

This. Mandatory leave periods to refresh and spend time with family isn't as great as it sounds.

I note that the gift was given to all retail staff too. I don't think too many retail jobs would receive decent gifts like this.

hahaha : discounted iTunes gift cards as gifts to employees

its the gift that keeps on giving..... back to apple.

Some store employees do get bonuses. Also they got shares for free, too. So, these Beats are a nice little touch.

Who are you worried you'll offend?

A lot of Apple Store employees come from many different cultures and religions. And Apple culture is a culture of inclusivity in the work place. So it's less about offending someone and more about including everyone.
