This is good, but why did they extend it again... They've already done it once.

If Apple keeps this up there never force uses to use iCloud and pay for storage.

I mean all users (weather migration, or otherwise) should all have 5 Gig...

I don't see what makes MobileMe uses special in this case.....

But if Apple keeps extending, then former MobileMe customers will be always happy...

May I remind Apple their keynote "iCould is where MobileMe left off" .. well..... if MobileMe customers reckon they are getting "more bang for your buck" they will get into a routine of "always" have above 5Gig without paying.

What happens then when this FINALLY ends ? Those uses will complain anyway..

Better sooner, than later...

Apple if 'officially' breaking their trend here by "keeping uses happy"

I'm all for free stuff, but Apple is becoming another Microsoft with this.

I suspect lots of users were going to downgrade back to the free 5gb, Apple wants us to really use up our extra storage, so gives us more time to upload our stuff so that downgrading no longer becomes an option ;)

It's a freebie with an ulterior motive.

Because the expiration date of the bonus space was mistakenly set for 2050 instead of 2012, and they felt they had to rectify it somehow.

So much for 2050.

An obvious, but potentially expensive mistake!

Apple offer something for free, and people complain. Unbelievable. Good job, Apple.

Leave it to the cynics to put a negative spin on everything, but in this case it may have been a pre-emptive strike by APPLE.

I've had my additional storage room as well. But personally, 5GB is way enough for me as I do not backup my iDevices over iCloud because of the slow speed.

why are they doing this?
To look good because iCloud is suffering due to many factors, the primary one is it's immature state & lack of clear path. Trying hard to not look lost & confused as with MobileMe. It's been long enough, I can't help but think that Apple has bitten off more that they can chew. Hopefully I'm wrong.

I don't like this. I want Apple to be unapologetic and enigmatic. I'm missing the abuse.

Amazing isn't it? I thought when I clicked on this thread I'd see a lot of Apple love. Not so much.

Yup. I see a lot of childish whining attitude everywhere. A few years ago, one was responsible for their data - involved buying hard drives, backups and more.

Now at least there is the convenience that *some* data can be stored for free on the cloud. But no, they *should* provide more space and more services for free. Sometimes I think people really think that all this massive data is stored in literal thin air, and not server farms and what not.

Ditto the "worthless" thought. 20GB is too little data to sync all my iDevices, and $40 is way too much $. So while I might be tempted to try it out I won't because I'd just have to transfer it somewhere else next year, so easier to just keep on my computer and use some other company's cloud services for important file backup.

Exactly! Since Apple devices come at a premium cost, 5 gb per device seems really reasonable. As it is, I can backup only my iPhone or my iPad to the cloud, but not both because that would exceed the 5 gb limit. If I were to buy an additional iDevice, I'd be out of luck for that one too.

Apple keeps track of how many devices are registered to your Apple ID; it couldn't be hard to link storage to the device ID as well as the Apple ID.

Bad idea! So you have 3 devices 15gb total and sell one of the but your using 14.9 Gb of space. You disassociate a device because its broken or your selling it. What part of the 14.9gb will be deleted so you can give apple back there 5gb??

iCloud backup is for people without pc's if you have a computer turn it off and backup with wifi sync. Problem solved!

50GB per device is reasonable. I know this because the Galaxy S3 comes with 50 GB free on dropbox for two years. And that's on top of the standard free.

I currently have 32GB free with skydrive too.

But even with all that, my photos and personal videos are over 100GB (about 10 years worth) so I don't see how these numbers are even remotely good enough for anything beyond a two year contract.

They're just hoping you'll use way over 5GB(free). So when next year comes around you'll pay for the 25GB you got for free this year. Like drug dealers they start you off with a free taste, then when you want more...Pay up. :p

I've not got a clue how to really use that space, I want my old iDisk.

My family has 4 devices all on the same iCloud. Just the photos and videos on the wifes iPhone alone is 3.5gb.

I guess if you don't have photo backup turned on then you'll only be using a few kb.

the 25gb is pretty worthless to me without iDisk access. Im currently using .02GB and have 24.98 free

Agreed. Absolutely worthless. Too bad they killed iDisk without providing a proper replacement. Documents in the Cloud with its immature storage APIs is a joke. It is totally incapable of handling applications such as OmniFocus. No thanks. Bring back iDisk.

The extra storage is free for now, hoping that you'll use more than 5 GB and will be forced to pay for it in the future.

I also agree that Apple should provide additional storage based upon the capacity of the iDevice that the user has purchased, justified by the incredible markup they charge for flash storage.

I'll stick with my free 25 GB Microsoft Skydrive account for now with my documents accessible from both Windows and Mac OS file systems, and not walled-in by Apple's iCloud storage APIs.

iCloud is somehow even more underwhelming now than last year. Photo stream is great but apple offers such little space. Compare iCloud to dropbox. Dropbox does way more for way less money.

I agree. Plus its got 2-factor verification.

Franklin Delano!! got the email too. Its not until 2050 like I hoped.. but meh I will take it =)

I'm surprised that no one has referred to the article that Apple's email links to. This says "We will continue to provide you with this additional storage until September 30, 2013, or until you choose to upgrade your iCloud storage plan." It also says that if you have already ordered an upgrade, they have extended you at no charge. Basically, it answers several of the questions that folk are asking here.

I'm grateful for the additional storage. 5GB is not quite enough for my three devices. The 20GB they are providing is more than enough for now. If I am going to continue to receive that at no charge until I choose to upgrade it, then that's great!

It may be sad, but little things like this always make me smile... Thanks Apple!
I dont care what the reasons behind it are, its just nice not to have to worry about the size of backups for a while.

P.S now where the ******* are the iMacs! :p

How are people using so much space? My iPad backup is 1.6GB (18 months of accumulated data) and my iPhone is 82MB.
