I feel like courts have consistently rules that there is no right to privacy in public.

I would prefer that there wasn't cameras recording all over the place, but that ship sailed a while ago with smart phones.

Now, I fully expect a future where everyone has recording devices attached to their person for safety.
In other words, the Panopticon.

I wouldn't be shocked if Apple has been working on (perhaps in collaboration with UC Berkeley or MIT) and may release technology to computationally pre-process displayed text and images to correct for users' vision aberrations; perhaps even some that are not correctable through lenses.

That would be sweet. And a real coup. I can see it! :)

Something for gaming if they can get enough developers would probably sell well.
Interesting idea. It’s certainly possible that would generate a niche interest.

It's the ultimate in crime prevention. Don't try anything on me - everything you do is recorded.

Although I hope faces and voices are automatically distorted until the recorded consents or law enforcement gets involved... it doesn't have to be as locked down as other stuff Apple does. Undistorting it without a valid reason should be about as hard as recording an involuntary video from your phone... 100% doable if determined, but inconvenient enough that it doesn't actually happen all that often.
Just what everyone needs, Ring doorbell on your face with law enforcement getting secret special access and everyone living in a surveillance culture.

Whoa... this is much sooner than expected. Feels false... also I hope that neither of these glasses is how the final product will look. Frankly I'm hoping Apple invents a new style for glasses that becomes vogue because modern glasses all look terrible to my tastes.

Also, now that the name has been leaked, I think we can all agree it's terrible and must therefore be the fake name, or else was the name but is no longer now that it has been leaked, so hopefully we get something with a great name.

iSee would be a million times better... anyone got any better names?

Apple iSight!

Bring back the name! iSight is back in a new form!

Does it feel sooner then expected? I feel like google glass shipped in 2012/13? It would be ALMOST 10 years later and we’ve been hearing about it forever

Haven't read the previous posts, so don't know if it's been mentioned already. Might be a stretch, but is it sci-fi to have glasses where the lenses / tints change automatically. Just googled it & got this;

This would be huge for Apple if they could pull it off.

It'd shake up the whole industry and mean no longer having to change normal glasses every 2 years or so (getting those folk onboard) and maybe get 6 years support like iOS devices.

Now this would be worth buying.

I think the pushback was more like "get the hell away from me with that hidden, always-on, internet conected camera strapped to your face". It's wayyy too Black Mirror for a lot of people's comfort -- and I'm one of those people.

Sure, Apple will probably put some kind of indicator/safeguard against surreptitious recording. They'll make it as attractive and innocuous as possible because they're Apple.

But does anybody think this story ends with Apple? How about the Android knockoffs? Say hello to creepers uploading your image to wherever, and get ready to get doxxed with real-time facial recognition. I guess it's good we're all getting used to wearing masks, huh?
Not sure I buy that. these are the same people that use Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, all of those apps and websites that they claim mine their data. They probably still tell others to, "Google it".

I'm with those that say it should've been called iSight. For the young ones in the forum this was an existing Apple product (webcam).

But Alas, Tim is differentiating the Steve products from the Tim products with :apple:.

The can't get rid of the i completely though, the iPhone and iPad names are too iconic. They could turn the iMac into the Macintosh, though...

I don’t think it was a factor, but another company had the iWatch trademark.
Ballmer likely has more cash in his 23rd sock drawer than the total of your worldly assets so be careful who you insult ;)
It’s actually a play off “OK boomer” which makes it hilarious.

Tesla vehicles record everything that happens around them. Nobody seems to care about that.

I presumed that Apple would distort faces and voices of people who did not consent to being recorded. Apple could require users to give some gesture or make some face to consent to being recorded - without that they're just an unintelligible blur (consider the episode of Black Mirror in which people can physically block each other.)

Unlike general phone access, I expect Apple would provide some means of retrieving the unobscured video, especially for the purpose of when your recording contains evidence of a crime, where obviously a criminal giving consent wouldn't be expected.

People largely complain because they don't want to be recorded going about their daily life without their consent. That already happens all the time with phones. Obscuring people gives their privacy back.

Also, I should mention cultural norms have majorly shifted since Google Glass. People under 20 don't seem to mind the idea that everything they do is filmed and will end up online... they grew up with everyone having phones recording and uploading all the time. They have no idea what privacy is.
No one even knows about Tesla recording. If you told them, they would cover their face every time a Tesla drove by.

I think your assumptions are heading in the wrong direction here. Apple does not want to get into the video evidence and security and privacy violation business. That is the entire reason they want end to end encryption in every product.

Also, Apple Glass isn't going to sell well to younger people because most of them have no reason to wear glasses at all. That's why you don't see many young people wearing Apple Watch. They have no connection or need for a watch because they are too young to remember non-smart watches or care. Apple Glasses are for customers that already wear glasses which is why Apple is supporting prescriptions too.

And how do you propose people even know they are being recorded by Apple Glass when it is designed to look sleek and simple just like a pair or real glasses. You're expecting a privacy social contract to be fulfilled between two parties and a gesture system of some kind to also work effectively by someone potentially being recorded that doesn't even own their own Glasses or even know that they are talking to someone who does.

As cool as these sound I just dont see a real everyday use for these. I mean it’s really cool but other than the novelty and certain niche situations, eh. I hope Apple cooks up something exciting for these

Quite a play. Very hilarious  You have disagreed with comments regarding the fact that no other companies seem to have copied the butterfly keyboard and that the Touchbar has not be a resounding success so please educate us with the reasons you have to oppose these statements.

You’re talking about the same company who used the name iPhone 11 Pro Max, HomePod, AirPods, iPod, AirPower, and the one that everyone used to make fun of, iPad.
The same company who started with Retina display, then retina HD display, then super retina display, then super retina display XDR.
The company who literally released a product called iPod Sox.
The same company who named the OS that several professionals used “High Sierra.
The same company that started several debates on how to pronounce “X”, Mac OS X, Finalcut Pro X, Logic Pro X, iPhone X...
Their names have always been all over the place.
The iMac was originally the MacMan for gods sake

I'm not saying the name won't be BAD, I'm saying that their marketing department has more sense and clout than to rip-off the name of a Google product that inspired a whole new type of tech-hatred. I legitimately think it's more likely that they'll name them 'Goggles' or 'Shades' or 'Blinders' or something else equally awful than 'Glass'.

Is it an absolute must for people to have smart glasses with a recording function? I mean I can see how useful that would be for recording accidents and other unexpected events where every second counts, but day to day, personally I'd be happier without smart glasses having that feature.

Maybe two versions would work better.

Okay nice hardware... and what do these do exactly?

I’ll repost here what I posted a year ago to someone asking the same question and continues to hold true and what Apple is still trending towards:

...(reposted in full below) ...

You could do email and browse the web on a laptop perfectly fine, so why invent the iPhone?

It really doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see a future where a new version of the internet is overlaid on top of the real world, in real time. Where we connect with the real world rather than get lost in glass slabs. Where technology gets out of the way and augments your life, popping in with information and communication, rather than steal away your attention.

Just as Uber and Instagram couldn’t have been possible or even imagined without the iPhone, what applications are going to be invented for AR will only happen when there are millions of us walking around with AR glasses on our faces.

I can imagine a social media type network where your friends’ experiences would be shown to you as you walk the city. Walk by a restaurant and a little bubble can pop up showing your friend’s review, maybe a little video of a fun moment they had there.

An AR dating app might show you available singles around you who choose to broadcast themselves. You walk into a bar and you look at a cute girl with a heart over her head, read a little profile bio, slide through some photos, say you’re interested. Earlier, she had noticed you and also swiped you right. You’re a match. Oh yeah, let me go talk to her.

Information will be embedded in the real world with AR glasses.

We’re moving from a paradigm of information inside a box that you deliberately fetch to one where information is overlaid on top of the real world and feels natural there and shows up in contexts where it’ll be useful to you.

Here's my prediction. It will be AR without cameras, lidar only.

This will provide more accurate 3d tracking while getting around the problem of people worrying that the glasses are recording everything.

So... 3D glasses for TV is... all but dead. Google Glass maybe has a small use in enterprise?

I can't see Apple's consumer driven business to have any interest in HUD tech for the masses. I have moments that I want to have my screen time to get work done, otherwise, its a distraction waiting to happen. I'm really struggling to see a consumer benefit from this one.

Remember when the iPad was first announced, and people were making jokes about feminine hygiene products? That name didn't get changed.

Apple Glass doesn't seem that catchy. But then again neither did Apple Watch.

Maybe:
Apple Optic or Apple Optics
Apple Vision
Apple View
Apple Specs

And all these kids will grow up with glasses - meanwhile I got taunted endlessly. Oh how times have changed. :p

They’re not called “Glass” any more than AppleWatch is called “Watch” or iPhone is called “Phone” or AppleTV is called “TV”.

AppleGlass isn’t GoogleGlass.

Oh please, you think that eliminating the space between the two words is what transforms it? That's a weak argument, and it's not a sufficiently strong branding on its own. I might be willing to believe 'Apple Glasses', because there's no such thing as a 'Glass' that you wear on your face to correct your vision, but to try and think that people (and the media) won't just draw an equivalency between the two is foolish. And in any case, the same 'glasshole' pejorative problem STILL exists with this naming.

Apple likes to try and change language (it's 'iPhone', not 'THE iPhone', and apparently is its own plural) but good luck getting the general populace to go along with that.
