Be much more interesting in conceal and carry states. :)

Sure would - you start firing over a simple property crime for an asset under $1000 (depreciated value) and you will be the one in jail for a good term.

I like to think this would be the outcome even in Texas or Arizona but probably not though....

In any event it would be written up by the NRA in their monthly "guns save the day" column....

It doesn't happen in C/C states;) I live in Alaska...we don't even need a C/C permit to Conceal and carry! As cliche as it sounds..."An armed society is a polite society!"

Those people who gave chase are nutz.

NEVER do that. Let them have it. The police will tell you this and it's true.
They are lucky this creep didn't have a gun on him. If a creep is resorting to this type of thing......

If he came in with a gun, no one would have done anything, but he didn't so they ASSSUMED he didn't have one.

Good Lord! What kind of world has this turned in to? BS....someone takes something of mine, a friends...or even someone close to me in a coffee shop (this situation)...I, and...I truly believe, MOST of the folks I hang around would give chase! Ridiculous to let someone just take your stuff...I understand, in some situations...it's best to back down...but not this type of situation. A lady, sipping a java...innocently hanging out and then robbed in a public place..>BS! Everyone of those coffee sipping yahoos ought to get up off their lazy arse and beat the living CRAP out of that douche bag. Nothing worse than a thief, liar or a cheat....they deserve EVERYTHING they receive and I would not choose to live in a place that saw it the other way around...

No it wouldn't. You attempt to fire on an unarmed thief not attempting to cause you personal harm with intent to maim or kill, and you'll be the one in prison for murder or attempted murder.

Not where I live! In Alaska, we can absolutely protect our property...our person, and/or someone else's person and property. Period. The thief has no rights, as soon as he's seen thieving, he may be shot on sight....if he's hurting someone...same thing. I don't see a difference...stealing from someone hurts a hell of a lot worse than a physical punch IMHO.

Those of you passive folk...I urge you to re-think your position. There is no reason you can't help someone in trouble...someone being robbed, someone being hurt, raped, beat, etc. IMHO, that's one thing terribly wrong with today's society....people that look the other way and don't help their neighbor. Again, in my opinion....those of you that would do that are not much higher up the social ladder than the thief him/herself. Sorry...but I feel VERY strongly about this...and along with Alaska...I think Texas feels the same;)

If your community feels differently, you should stand up and get the law changed....again, in my very humble opinion!

Kudos to you sir.

On the other hand, being a native of Atlanta, it's a strong stereotype that these kinds of people from the "Edgewood district" are dangerous criminal sociopaths who usually are packing heat or some sort of weapon. It would be a risk to anyone that chases this man... but then you have to ask yourself the question... is it worth the risk? To many it may be, and to others it may not.

For myself, I can't say what I would have done without being there... but I respect your opinion and am very glad there are people like you out there. :)

she shoulda let go, wham brand new insurance paid laptop.

It may not have been insured. I'd probably put up a fight for it too in that case. I look like an easy victim but SURPRISE! :D Some knobend at King's Cross station tried to steal my handbag. He got a swift and rough kick to the shin that made him cry out like a child who wanted his momma and I kept my bag.

I wouldn't think twice about tripping some thief running past me. People shouldn't be so damn afraid to look out for someone else, or themselves. You'd wish someone like that were around for you if you were being robbed, wouldn't you?

When people write true story it means it isn't. Welcome to the internet!

I'm sure Americans don't really think my country is a mix of cocky street urchins and men in top hats sipping tea.

Don't forget the tweed. All the men should be wearing tweed jackets.

But seriously, playing tug-of-war to keep your iDevice is one thing but chasing him after he's left the shop is just asking for trouble.

Being allowed to carry a gun out of site.

Basically, if this happened in the deep south the guy would have been shot, everyone would have fired into the air in celebration and they would have all danced in the mid-day sun. Picture this-

True story.

Atlanta is in the deep south. But thanks for posting a stupid stereotype. We so enjoy hearing them from someone who lives in a country which imprisons people for defending themselves.

in this litigious society i wouldn't touch the bloke. All you need is to hit the guy too hard, or push him over and he breaks a bone or something and then suddenly you go from hero to standing in court being sued by the thief

This has happened to both my brother and a good friend and both were hit with over $10k fines plus lawyer fees

not worth it, and it makes me sick

(although im in Australia, so law might be different where you guys are from)

Nah, it would be the same here in the U.S. As long as there are lawyers, the crooks will get away with their crimes.

Yes an obvious stereotype, I'm not being serious. My country also has self-defense laws, but just like the US they have limits. I'm not suggesting people should be imprisoned for tackling a thief, and I'm not suggesting they should be able to shoot them on site. Relax, it's a joke.

I'm from Texas... I got a chuckle from your post. :D

Sorry, no, not even in Alaska are you allowed to shoot a fleeing thief in the back.

Too bad. If more thieves where shot in the back, they might think twice about stealing stuff. For those of you saying let him go, it's just a computer, get a clue. It could be someone's life research, the cure for cancer, or something else important. I'm a software engineer and I have important source code on my laptop. You steal it and I would have to restore for back ups etc. that may not be up to date. Even if there isn't anything important on it, that's not the point. What he did was wrong and he knew it. If you let him go, you just encourage that type of behavior.

It's simple. Butt heads like this guy do this type of stuff because passive people let them get away with it. This needs to change or the behavior will never stop.

^^^ love it! I love when scumbags get caught!

Good story! It's nice to know there are still random citizens who help out eachother.

If you guys want another "SLIM BUCKET" get caught you would help me. I'm willing to pay. My car was broken into and they stole my daughter's clothes, my macbook Pro, GPS and some other stuff. But the good thing I got the IP Address every time they go online. Please, Please tell me what I can do to get a photo of this Bum. Is there anything I can do? I've been tracing him or her, who knows, for a while but I'm never online at the same time. GET ME A SNAPSHOT, SO I CAN GET TO SLEEZE BAG. Even my 5 year old daughter is pissed because all of her videos are on the laptop. I have dropbox.com installed on it and they logon every day, about once or twice.

HELLLLLPPPPPPPPPPP! JUST TELL ME HOW MUCH!

You quoted me...Yet I said NOTHING about shooting him in the back;) At all. Period. But indeed...you may check the laws of Alaska. If you are protecting your property, you may indeed use a firearm. How you choose to use that firearm at that time, in that particular situation...it's up to your discretion. However, in Alaska...the law is on the victim's side. Not the perpetrator's. There are several RECENT examples of folks using a firearm...and actually shooting the perpetrator...and after proof in court, there were no further consequences...The criminal paid his own medical expenses.

Please don't put words in people's posts that weren't there. It's un-cool.

Err... you wrote- "The thief has no rights, as soon as he's seen thieving, he may be shot on sight"

If the thief has no rights and can be shot on sight that means he can be shot in the back. Maybe that is not what you meant to say, but that is certainly what you implied.

Plus, 5 mins on google and I have learned that "If you are protecting your property, you may indeed use a firearm" isn't strictly true, you need more than just theft of property to use deadly force in Alaska.

That's pretty tough talk... However, by the time you figured out he had a gun it could be too late. Mac != your life

And yes, they do carry guns from time to time on grabs like this and holding a Macbook while firing a gun wouldn't be that hard.

its not that tough of talk.

if someone is trained to defend themselves, and perhaps is armed, the situation can be resolved.

you are right, its not worth it. but it sure is satisfying to handle that kind of situation.

I don't think I'd risk getting stabbed or shot over someone's else's iDevice (I wouldn't risk that over my own either). You never know what someone is capable of, especially a criminal who is about to be cornered (you know what they say about cornered rats...)

What if it was a cute girl?

Don't get me wrong, I am all for a good smack down, but chasing the guy down the street is the stupid part. He could have had buddies waiting around the corner...

Unfortunately you are furthering the stereotype that those of us in the South can't figure out when someone is joking.
