Why can we pay employees an extra 20% tip at restaurants in the US:confused: Apple can send money as a tip towards the employees as a tip. There is no law banning tips to employees in China that I am aware of. Bottom line is Apple does not share profits with shareholders so they do not pay dividends and neither pay tips to the employees that manufacture their products for them.

Keep your line open, Apple may want to call you for financial advice.

I see stock more of an investment rather then a paycheck. The surplus cash Apple uses to its advantage by buying large amounts of parts and supplies for an ever growing demand for iPhones & iPads which in turn raises the price of the stock.

Tipping applies to a service provided, not for a product produced, which is paid by an hourly wage.

Don't forget the cost of living in China is much lower and what Foxconn pays is often above minimum wage in China. Plus not having to pay for housing, food and medical care is quite a bonus.

Plus now a raise in pay for all entry level workers.

But if you feel they are still not payed enough any Apple product you buy you can send China your 20%.

You were saying?

Feel free to send them a tip if you want.

C/O Foxconn

Where else are they gonna manufacture?

Foxconn employs ~1,000,000 people. Apple decides to cave in to pressure from the lefties so they say "Sorry Foxconn, but you guys are baddies, f you we're moving our operation to a mansion staffed by labrador puppies paid 2.5x minimum wage." Where are they going to find another country with a spare million or so people to pick up the slack without Apple's supply chain grinding to a massive halt? They're stuck with Foxconn. :p

Given the extremely low suicide rate and throngs of people waiting to get in to work, it sounds like the best place in the world to work.

Apple: Where people not only wait in line to buy our products, they wait in line for a chance to make our products.

I think if ABC gave a biased report, the truth would come out via the internet anyway, and ABC would look bad. I'm sure ABC will be very in-depth and not take a blind eye to anything.

You actually believe this?
These kind of TV shows only report on things that give themselves a better public image and TV ratings. Reporting integrity does not exist for them.

Only about 10,000 Foxconn employees build Apple products, but locate THAT factory where in the US?

The simple fact that it's "Apple" granting access, and not "Foxcon", shows that Apple is really in charge, they're just using a different name. Anyone who misses this and wonders "Why the outrage against Apple, it's foxcon's factory", should remember this.

Apple grants, because that's Apple products being made there and Foxconn can't just let anyone there without Apple permission, can it?

We've only ourselves to blame. By voting so much for California-style big government that overregulates manufacturing and artificially raises labor costs with unions and minimum wage laws, we've driven almost all manufacturing to China where human life is less valued. You can't have your First World cake and eat your Third World too.

Solution: stop voting CA Democrat.

Look EVERYONE knows the slave like conditions in China, their millions of laborers are trying to improve their lives. Indeed, they are being exploited by their own government and corporations with the conditions they endure. Their salaries should probably double, or triple. The pressure exerted on Apple by the media and their consumers will only help further improve the conditions there, pushing up the price of production. If production increases enough, perhaps Apple will bring back some production to the US, or Mexico, or other country. This is a good thing.

Actually, no…there's a fairly straightforward solution: lobby your country's government to enact measures to encourage local manufacturing. WE -- as in, comparatively affluent non-Chinese -- created this problem by incentivizing corporations to send their manufacturing to a Communist regime with an abysmal human rights record.

Unfortunately to me that seems a bit of a pipe dream. Those jobs are gone and there are never coming back. If it's not China then it will just be another country that comes up and takes them. However for a whole long list of reasons those jobs are not coming back to America.

I think it's great. Couldn't be more entertained the US thinks it's found a dear friend in China. Always sweet to see two opposing countries lock in embrace/stranglehold.

I always wished I could have seen the collapses of any of the great empires firsthand.

Here's the scenario as I understand it.

Backing up for a moment, let me be clear I've been an Apple enthusiast & extremely loyal, happy customer since the first PowerBook 100 series debuted in 1991. So the only point being, I'm not bashing Apple. Just sharing my experience & perspective as someone who knows their Apple history well. I will only post my honest opinion (good or bad) depending on the topic.

To the point, it was Tim Cook under Steve Jobs direction that took them to China. A move I don't necessarily fault them for at the time, since everything they needed to fill demand for Apple products is there. It's also important to remember this was before they had the massive cash reserves of today.

Fast forward to the present. It's public record although rarely reported that after Cook had everything in place at Foxconn, Jobs flew over, had a sit down meeting & told Foxconn that he expected a 10% reduction in his costs each year if Foxconn wanted to keep Apple as a customer. This in addition the the incredibly low labor rate Jobs had already negotiated.

This is why I hold Apple accountable for SOME not All of the atrocities at Foxconn.

Finally, there's no better time than now, and no better man than Tim Cook to correct the issues & lead Apple forward. I have nothing but the highest regard for Tim Cook :)

Good post, Tim can right the ship, undo wrongs, and keep the apple polished

In the US when people go to a restaurant the people are expected to pay a 20% tip to the person who served them and if the person does not pay a tip he is considered cheap even though he already paid for what he ordered so why does Apple not pay the Chinese a 20% tip for them low paid workers? Hypocrisy

Would you care to enlighten us about the busboys' cut?

Do people realize that some in America don't get paid a whole lot more than this. I work at a sleep away camp and get paid $1,500 for the summer (tipping is not allowd). Of course I get room and board and all the food I can eat put when I did the math I only make about 2.33 per hour. And if I include the hours I'm sleeping that I am on call I make 1.85 per hour.

Just some food for thought.

It's a shame that Tim Cook has to take the heat for a scenario orchestrated by Steve Jobs.
Nobody held a gun to his head and made him take the CEO role, either.

Tim Cook's not a new face at Apple, he was well aware of how Apple products were made and why the cost of production is so low compared to the MSRP. Being the virtual head of a corporation means you take the heat for all sorts of things that aren't directly your fault, and may in fact have been started by a predecessor. That's why you get paid the big bucks.

To suggest Tim should be sympathized for in this whole thing is to say he really isn't cut out for this responsibility.

Anyone here who's truly upset about Foxconn is welcome vote with their wallet and not buy the next iPad/iPhone. Any takers?

* crickets chirping *

can we cut the fanboyism? geez, just because it's an "industry wide problem" doesn't excuse the fact that working conditions in apple factories are problematic. apple is a media darling, it gets the bulk of the tech spotlight day after day, and is one of the most profitable companies on earth.. so yes, it should get the majority of the attention when it comes to these labour issues, it's a double edged sword. it's like a celebrity who gets paid 40 million dollars per movie who complains about paparazzi. apple has to power and profits to change the industry like no other company. encourage them to do so, don't just make excuses for them. they've got 100 billion dollars in cash, and were the most valuable company on earth at one point last year.. they can do whatever they want, and they can make the lives of those workers considerably better.

i read somewhere that if apple products were made in the USA at around $8/hr it would raise overall costs of products by about 20%. workers in china get $1.78/hour and live in cramped dorms. if they cut the number of people per dorm in half and doubled the salaries of workers at foxconn for those making apple products, what are we talking about here? an extra 5%? we can't pay an extra $25-30 on our toys so that the people working on them can have a slightly better quality of life..? even with those improvements it's a life that not a single person on this forum would want for a week much less a lifetime.

Foxconn has about a million employees. Maybe 200,000 work on Apple products. So what do you think should happen? People working on Apple products make more money for the same job? So what will be the next news? 800,000 employees threaten suicide because they get paid less for the same job?

Right. Lol.

I can see the anti-apple fanboys saying that it's Apple's fault that the non-Apple employees committed suicide. They'll say, 'Apple shouldn't have given raises just to SOME employees, EVERYONE should have gotten raises. (Even those employees working for Samsung, Google, etc.)'

The anti-apple fanboy venom is unbelievable.

People don't tip in China, or most Asian countries. ;)

Actually, people don't tip in most countries, period. Don't get me started on American tipping standards and the ever-increasing minimum percentage. Maybe if they actually paid waiters the minimum wage, or even a little more...
