This is actually kind to Apple. Overestimated demand == slow sales, but it sounds much, much better.

Maybe they cut orders because they are starting to manufacture the Macs in the USA. Apple said they would be making one of their Mac lines here this year. Maybe they are doing more than just one? Just a thought...

Yes, but this story is about over supply of components, not under supply. Apple wouldn't tell suppliers to stock up on parts if it didn't think it wouldn't need them.

Also the U.S. facility is rumored to be for a very high margin and/or low volume Mac. That narrows it down to the mini and whatever pro machine replaces the Mac Pro, neither of which, combined, come anywhere near the sales of any of the other Macs by themselves.

If you believe all these reports then it sounds like Apple is just shutting down its business. That's odd, considering my last three trips to an Apple store in different locations (and two different cities) have found the Apple Store packed with customers. Apple must have learned how to make their products out of fairy dust and they no longer need these suppliers.

You also gotta wonder about those studies that showed Apple gained market share on Android this last quarter (meaning they out-paced Android sales). How do you do that without components to make your products? It's simple: fairy dust. And it is just as credible as Digitimes.

Digitimes, so most likely bs. If true, may be from Samsung? Maybe Apple has started cutting ties to Samsung and they are butt hurt.

Perhaps if said Macs were cutting edge in terms of performance and value instead of simply design, demand would not be an issue.

Just sayin'.

What you say may be true indeed. I know that from a media production facilities standpoint, the Mac just doesn't cut it unless it's for offline editing systems or administrative work at best.

The heavy iron systems that used to be Mac Pros have been or shortly will be replaced by HP workstations. Especially given the switch from Final Cut to Adobe.

The entire industry is down, so this news does make sense even though it may be marginalized by the fact that supply chain analysis is a bit like reading tea leaves.

I read a lot of comments regarding high mac prices, design iteration, etc , but numbers have shown mac sales substantially better off than most of the crowd (I think only levono grew in sales last quarter). Not to mention they dominate profit margin in this industry as well as the mobile space.

So while apple dipped a little, they seem immune to the extensive pc industry funk at the moment. Tough year to get a bead on.

This is not good at all for Apple.

Hopefully this will turn out good for customers, and Apple will seriously stop screwing us overpriced, underspec'd, uninnovative products.

The earnings call is going to be ugly. Very ugly. Get out while the stock is still above $300!

If Apple would only wake up and adjust their prices. They would capture way more market share. JMHO

I think this one is huge. Many countries are still bogged down in the "economic downturn", unemployment is high, and underemployment is a huge (and often overlooked) problem as well... I know so many people with master's degrees in science, or other useful qualifications, who are working menial jobs or even part-time because there is NOTHING available for them.

While people's incomes and spending habits have changed significantly over the last few years, apple's prices have not. Not everyone makes tons of money like the Apple executives. Normal people... are fairly poor...

My desktop is a Hackintosh

That is illegal. It hurts Apple. It is copyright infringement. You are not living up to your end of the bargain you made when you licensed the OS. The entire Apple community is suffering due to that sort of thing. It hurts each and every one of us.

How can you even admit to such a thing in public? It makes me sick.

Tell apple to make a headless box then :D give the people what they want.

If they make them even more expensive, that could help a lot...

Honesty, two years ago the upgrade from iMac 2010 to 2011 costed me 400e, this year I would need to pay 1000e, no feckin way Apple

This is why we need Apple to engineer rumours & leaks!

Otherwise, we get speculation based on nothing at all, that bounces around the analyst echo chambers for months, all re-reporting each other's cow-turds, making rumour sites and bloggers look positively sensible, by comparison.

Sadly, Apple seems to leak, only when consumer expectation gets really out of control, vastly exceeding what's actually coming (to cool off expectations - per iPhone 5 - double down on security, my arse).

So IF Apple has really awesome products coming through, there's no need to leak. And THIS IS THE SAD PART… THAT sends the stock market into a death spiral, even though profits are astronomical and market share is growing (not to mention, the whole electronics industry waits to see what Apple's doing, so it knows what to copy for the next 5 years).

What we really need is mundane products coming, lots of leaks, and the stock market getting giddy over stuff it knows absolutely nothing about.

So, either we get
  • good products, no rumours, analysts looking up their own butts for supply chain fiction, and the stock price falls;
  • or OK products, ridiculous rumours, stratospheric stock price, followed by a tremendous stock crash because the iPhone didn't shoot lasers and make your car fly… and the stock market is surprised by this…

You wouldn't be Apple, if they paid you (position pinkie)… one billion dollars.

Why do people forget that they pay a nice dividend?

When interest rates are SUCKING for savers, tucking money away in a stock that pays dividends (and the company has a ****-ton of cash) is a great investment strategy.

Why should they? what is wrong with the iMac given that there are thunderbolt and USB3 expansion capabilities?

With interest rates at near zero people are actually losing money on their savings at a rate of around 1-2% per year hence the reason why people have been flocking to the share market.

Well, boo-diddly-hoo for Apple. I'm sure Uncle Steve would, in his youth, have done the exact same thing. I applaud the Hackintosh brigade. Apple don't offer a machine that suits them, so they go all pragmatic and make their own. Good luck to them.

That's what I said, but with different words.

Just because the share price is falling doesn't mean it's time to sell it. The alternatives are not that great.

Macs are less important, i hope they are not considered as sleeping dogs lol

More like "in a coma". The desktop/laptop market is shrinking quickly, and Macs never really made much of a dent in it even when they used to be popular.

If the rumours are true, I propose 3 reasons for the lull in demand, aside from the World Recession and that "everyone's skint": 1) They are way too expensive; 2) Mountain Lion is more Dog than Cat, and; 3) Quality and build is diabolical.
Let me elaborate on point 3. Every single Apple product I have owned since 2001 has failed in some way or another. Screens and/or displays on ALL (7 in total) iMacs I've had, hard drives on iMac 27 inch, hinges on Powerbook, DVD drives on 4 iMacs, apart from my latest iPhone 5, ALL iPhones from Mark 1 onwards have been replaced by Apple due to faulty builds. Yet my old and horrible-to-use HP Tower from 2004 has had no problems (apart from software/OS) to date. Neither has our 2005 Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop. Jus' sayin'... ;-)

So, if Apple's build quality is so bad, why does Apple consistently rank #1 is customer satisfaction year after year?

Jus' sayin'.

Pro market not even remotely a driver in Apple's overall sales. In other words, irrelevant.

The truck analogy will become real soon enough.

Yep.

It used to be that everybody drove huge giant trucks back in the early 20th century when motorized vehicles were first hitting the market. Then they switched to cars.

When you think like that, it makes sense that Mac sales are plummeting. Nothing to worry about.

The biggest issue with Win8 among those complaining is the appearance and feel vs WinXP, Vista, and 7. But that can easily be fixed with a little program like Classic Shell or Start8.

People are not going to switch to an even more different OS from WinXP, Vista, or 7 because Win8 is slightly different than what they're used to. Moving to OS X from a pre-Win8 OS computer would be an even bigger change for them, IMO. And it may also require replacing a bunch of old software and hardware that isn't OS X compatible. That's a lot of $$$ to be spending in this still down economy.

If anything, they'll just stick with what they currently have. And the IDC report from a few days ago seems to support this.

Not true. OS X isn't very different from Windows. You still have a minimize and close button on the top of the window. You still have open applications at the bottom. You still have a start button of sorts (the menu bar). Mac doesn't take too long to figure out, especially given that most people who would have issues with Windows 8 are already using iPhones and iPads where the UI isn't much different.

Windows 8 is completely different. It might not be so bad if you didn't have to just remember that a certain corner can do a certain thing. It's frustrating to use unless you have a touch screen. Sure, you can download the shell programs to fix this, but how many old geezers are going to know this is even possible? They'll buy a Windows 8 laptop, not know what to do, take it back after becoming frustrated, and I doubt they'll buy another. What else is there after they refuse to use Windows 8? OS X and Windows 7 (Which is becoming harder and harder to get on a new PC)

Your argument is widely invalid. The reason Mac sales are dropping is because of the lack of Mac Pro and because of the iPad. My grandma wants to sell her new windows 7 laptop simply to buy an iPad instead. Laptops are dying for the common consumer that simply uses email, plays games, and checks facebook.

Well Apple, when you make a laptop with no DVD drive or ethernet ports or user upgradable parts and charge several thousand for it, refuse to update your Halo model for several years and still charge thousands for it, launch an all in one with no DVD drive so it can be a it thinner at the edge oh and make it non user upgradable on the base model, yet charge several hundres for it. Funny how everyone will stick with what they got and buy your iPad's instead!

What's that sound? Oh it's Apple's sares dropping.... again.....

Me thinks Cook and the team are not the right people for Apple, seem utterly clueless on how to run it?

My comment above being ignored, if the executive team fails to correctly read market demand, I mean it's not like a surprise more and more are ditching the computer for the tablet, then it's time for a reshuffle or a complete change. Also surely if they keep mucking the suppliers around, they'll eventually refuse to supply Apple as it will cost them too much in loss?

I bet the investors will be concerned over this news, as it is a bad rep for Apple at the end of the day, especially if they failed to predict tablet sales effects on the market when they make the number one seller.

MacRumors really thinks people will believe a random rumour over the words from the mouth of the Apple CEO?

I still believe that The Steve was not Lisa Brennan's father. He said he was sterile. I believe him, and not some random rumor.

You sound like the same people that whined when Apple removed the floppy drive. How did that work out for them? This is Steve's ideology they are implementing. It's ridiculous to blame that on Tim Cook. Jeez......people......
