Step 3) introduce your own ads

Step 4) ???

Step 5) Profit.
This isn’t true.

Step 4 isn’t “???”, it’s “Laugh hysterically at your users in the boardroom”.

That would really make me angry. However I can’t blame apple as they have to make up revenue due to multiple regulations that want to make sure that apple ip is given away for $0.

What regulations are seeking to force Apple to give away IP for $0? Everything Apple markets is generally paid for in some way by consumers and/or developers through purchases of devices, subscriptions, fees, etc. and is for the benefit of use on/with Apple devices. Things given away for "free" (e.g., CarPlay) is Apple's choice and is done as a way for them to enhance or encourage the use or purchase of other Apple products.

Is Apple or Google paying auto manufacturers to include Apple Google Play or do the auto companies pay them?

That’s one of the reasons I’ve stuck with Apple products. No ads. At least nothing as invasive as the other places do. Sad. I guess the party’s over.

This was still interesting news. Now I don't have to motivate myself to pay dearly for Apple products.

The truth is, I like Android and Google's services, but I've been trying to switch to iOS and Apple to avoid ads and data collection. Now it doesn't feel as relevant anymore.

Google may show more advertising but so far no news has been about sold data but more about how Google makes a profit from it. Still nothing I defend. I wouldn't compare Google to Facebook though.

However, the advantage of Android is several. I can "deGoogle" my phone, uninstall/disable everything from Google, install F-Droid and the Aurora Store. It's not perfect but since I have to have Android or iOS (for BankID in my country) I have to choose. I would have liked to try a Linux Phone otherwise and I cheer for the open source community.

Nope. Just nope. I can justify the “Apple Tax” because it’s free of bloatware and the core apps aren’t laden with ads. When I pay $1,000+ for an iPhone and $30/month for Apple One, I will not see ads in Maps or any other core app. The day I do will be when I go back to my built-in navigation in my car and get a flip phone.

I like Apple because they see me as the customer and not the product. When that changes, I’m out.

Find it somewhere else…like a new product.
New products are a gamble. Look at the original HomePod, it’s purpose wasn’t really well defined and people thought it was too expensive. Changing policies to allow ads on ALL your already existing and popular products is relatively cheap, as every year Apple comes out with a new OS and releases bug fixes during the year anyway. Yes, some people will quit, and a lot more people will say that they are going to. But most won’t. You don’t have an option that doesn’t cost you time and money to set up an alternative to what Apple/Google/Samsung is providing for “free”.

Selling data could start now and start providing income immediately. If there was a viable alternative this would be dangerous over the long term, but there isn’t a smartphone or computer OS alternative. A few will quit and more will complain for a while but most people won’t care enough to even just complain.

I have used a feature phone on and off (over six months at a time) but in my case it creates problems in everyday life. BankID and now local traffic is app-first. I hate it. 😠

Otherwise felt liberating with a feature phone. No distraction and more present.

I think it's so sad when the majority of the population walks around staring down at a screen. 🙁

Does this really need repeating and beating a dead horse?

Sure.

Sure, but CarPlay is not server side. Any functionality that depend on apples servers might be going down this path.

Ads (or "sponsored results") has completely killed Google Maps for me. It will be truly depressing if they also make an appearance in Apple Maps.

So am I going to see ads on CarPlay in my car? Why doesn't Apple put a coin slot in my car that I have to feed to use Apple Maps.

This is awful!
Word on the street 2023 BMW's have in-car ApplePay!

Like a NASCAR car or a European sports jersey.

Imagine a multi-trillion company having ads in their default apps. And then people think corporations will self-regulate without governmental intervention.

Because Android/Google does not have ads...lol. You can't escape it and the premium experience on Android will cost you the same.
My android phone doesn't have ads, not even the freemium, ad supported apps have ads. My dirty, little secret is root/firewall/AdAway. Gawd, I can't over how having a real firewall on my phone drastically improves my quality of life. Y'all listening, Apple? Give us a built in firewall.

Adding to my previous post :

Let's not forget the issues of the Android flagship hones

- standby battery drain
- S22 Ultra still has shutter lag issues, so you are guaranteed to miss that special kodak moment; it also overheats and the battery is trash; I've read all that on Reddit and different forums, so don't shoot the messenger
- I also have a Pixel 6 for work and that thing is buggy and laggy for a stock Android phone that uses Google's own chipset
- I've missed important notifications on Android phones; people can say what they want about iPhone's notifications but they are more reliable

I love Android but let's not forget about those issues
Tim is that you?

Apple better tread lightly. ATT could be deemed anticompetitive if Apple goes too hard on the ad sector

Is there a term for the practice of sort of half-seeing ads but not registering them? I do this all the time, and I feel like I've been trained for years on the internet. Pop up ad? My brain doesn't even register what the ad is, I just reflexively hit the x to close it. Sidebar ads? My eyes have become accustomed to not register them. I'm sure there is some subliminal and/or subconscious action taking place, but overtly I feel like so much of this ad space is just wasted.
I worry about this sometimes. Like, are ADs training us to ignore things, and we take that training and apply it to the real world? Probably not, but I still wonder.

I'm so sick of ads getting injected into everything, I'm already beyond irritated. Though I would argue those annoying "guides" Apple already forces on everyone in Maps to be 'ads' in a certain sense. But even though this is a stupid idea, I'd mind it less if Apple would just serve all the ad content from dedicated (and identifiable) ad servers so I could block them via DNS like I already do for iOS updates and the 'ads' in Music.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
