If Apple brings in ads and loose privacy, then the difference between the Apple and better Android phone is mainly the price in favor of Android... So, yeah. Android it is. We pay Apple premium mainly because of its privacy and no ads compared to big brother Google, right?
And some things actually even work better on Android, like Android Auto over CarPlay, and Phone Link integration over iPhone/Mac integration. (Phone link really isn't comparable, it's a different way of doing it and it actually does pretty well.)

If they go down this path, I will call it the first of many self inflicted lethal blows Apple will have taken on its way out… with them becoming just another google/facebook, that will send more people packing… they have let the Wall Street element sharing offices in the C-Suite with Tim take way, way, too much control… And its showing more and more every day…

It‘s time for another developer to step into the Operating System game and find some hardware people willing to work with the architecture thats not PC Swiss cheese and Windows/Intel Based… i can remember the days of “B-OS” and really wish that would have taken off and grabbed the developer attention and got the apps developers interested enough to invest their time into it…

At some point we are going to need an “alternative to Apple” thats not a PC…

At this juncture and the antics I’ve seen Apple take over the last 3-4 years, I would support it. Apple has lost its creative and innovative core values - and its too bad… but that is what dealing with Wall Street parasites will do to a company… and there are tons of examples of this…

We’re bombarded with ads wherever we go, and frankly it’s got out of hand.

And don’t forget that in order to target these ads, Apple is watching our behaviour, analysing our travel, and building profiles of us.

It’s time we, the customer said ‘enough is enough’.

Apple makes billions each year. Does it honestly need to make billions more? Of course not. This is pure greed, and in the end will be the undoing of capitalism. We need more responsibility on the part of corporations like Apple, to protect our economic system, not greed to quash it.

No to Ads in Maps, Waze is doing this and it’s annoying sometimes. The Maps speaking directions are getting better than for Waze, continue improving and it will be the default app for many.

Does this really need repeating and beating a dead horse?

Sure.

Sure, but CarPlay is not server side. Any functionality that depend on apples servers might be going down this path.

Ok but you brought it up in this new context of basically excusing Apple for doing something (injecting ads) you, and it looks like many others, strongly disagree with. I just don’t see it as a reasonable excuse especially since allowing sideloading, multiple browser engines, multiple app stores, compatibility with competitive products, etc. is not really "giving away IP for $0."

I also think Apple would've explored going down this "injecting ads" path regardless of regulations.

Waze is owned by Google - I avoid it for that very reason alone, as do many others.

We can combat this. What someone needs to write is a public blacklist that contains companies with annoying ads. Then, users can choose to subscribe to the list and have ads and websites blocked. Then companies will risk falling into a black hole if they cross a line with their advertising.

Remember when?

Let's pool our money together and build our own OS

Then I'll get greedy and add ads and there is nothing you'll be able to to do about it

I’m game. I promise not to sell you or any customers out until I either have a foolproof plan about how to accomplish the sell-out or I’m afraid that you are about to do the same thing to me first.

I actually would be ok pulling a Wozniak and taking a buyout for a couple of hundred million dollars and just having fun with no responsibility for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, I am not as smart as Woz.

That’s exactly what it is as long as there are laws preventing apple from locking down their ecosystem.
I also think Apple would've explored going down this "injecting ads" path regardless of regulations.
Less likely, imo.

Do what you have to do Apple. We don’t want you to go bankrupt. 🙄
They're already at $2 trillion right? Next stop is $2.5 trillion! (All of the Apple fans can continue to brag how their beloved company is a $2 trillion company)

Problem is what would replace it?
They have Android phones with all of the tracking and stuff stripped out. Will want to avoid Google Play since they'll track you there. It only works with Android since it's an open platform which allows for this. iOS is too closed for this, although there may be some jailbreak solution here [shrug]

None of us like it, but this is reality. Android is worse and a lot more privacy compromised. The reality of business is Apple is not going to leave billions on the table for someone else to take. No one is. I do wish Apple and all the others would offer pay versions with none of this. In a lot of cases I would opt to pay rather than get loaded up with ads.

A lot of people screaming if Apple does this they are out of here. Where are they going where it is better advertising wise?

In terms of Maps, Apple stinks. The search function is horrible. I hate Google Maps mostly because it is Google, but it works and has good data and transit information and can find locations when your spelling or memory is not so good. Apple is useless if you are missing even one letter.

I spend time for business in Tel Aviv, a major tech hub in the Middle East and I assure you Apple Maps is almost useless there. No transit information and it can't find places in the city that have been there for a few thousand years! It's embarrassing.

It's starting to get clear what the new focal point for Apple critics are.

When I first joined Macrumours in 2011, Apple cynicism was centred around Apple's supposed weakening ecosystem. About how Apple's closed approach was supposedly wrong and customers would abandon their iPhones in favour of "more open" and cheaper android devices. The Apple Watch and AirPods were met with much derision, and doubt was cast on Apple's strategy of building a multi-product ecosystem.

Of course, we know how that played out. Apple will routinely garner the lion's share of profits in the industry, they now sport over a billion active users, and are even actively converting switchers even as we speak. It took time, but eventually, people saw through the BS and Apple cynicism focused on a weakening and increasingly irrelevant Apple no longer generates the clicks and views. People no longer buy these untruths.

Then when it became clear that Apple is stronger than ever, criticism is now shifting to how Apple is too strong and apparently making way too much money. Everything that Apple does is said to be done with profit in mind. When Apple stopped supporting the iPhone 7 with iOS 16, or the 2018 iPad Pro not getting stage manager, of course it must be due to wanting to drive device upgrades.

If Apple tries to enforce their rules regarding App Store purchases, of course it must be due to profit in mind. And if Apple doesn't do so, then it's framed as Apple giving preferential treatment to certain developers. If something will boost Apple's revenue, such as additional services, or ads, then Apple will do it for no reason than to pad their bottom line, no questions asked. Doubt is being cast on Apple's privacy-first mindset, with the critics insinuating that this is nothing more than a marketing ploy by Apple in recent years to make more money.

The problem with such criticism is that it are never viewed from the perspective of consumers, always the developer. Without us, the app ecosystem wouldn't be where it is today (no doubt developer support matters, but they wouldn't be where they are today without our patronage either).

Apple literally can't win in their eyes, and Apple isn't supposed to, because where else is the rage-clicks supposed to come from?

It stands remembering that Apple stands to earn much more money by keeping its users satisfied and engaged in its ecosystem. Of course Apple can always do better, but I continue to believe that these are all done with the consumer in mind. The truth will come out in time, and when it does, I can only wonder what goalpost the cynics will move on to next in a bid to criticise Apple.

How about just covering this whole issue objectively and rationally to begin with? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
