It's starting to get clear what the new focal point for Apple critics are.
When I first joined Macrumours in 2011, Apple cynicism was centred around Apple's supposed weakening ecosystem. About how Apple's closed approach was supposedly wrong and customers would abandon their iPhones in favour of "more open" and cheaper android devices. The Apple Watch and AirPods were met with much derision, and doubt was cast on Apple's strategy of building a multi-product ecosystem.
Of course, we know how that played out. Apple will routinely garner the lion's share of profits in the industry, they now sport over a billion active users, and are even actively converting switchers even as we speak. It took time, but eventually, people saw through the BS and Apple cynicism focused on a weakening and increasingly irrelevant Apple no longer generates the clicks and views. People no longer buy these untruths.
Then when it became clear that Apple is stronger than ever, criticism is now shifting to how Apple is too strong and apparently making way too much money. Everything that Apple does is said to be done with profit in mind. When Apple stopped supporting the iPhone 7 with iOS 16, or the 2018 iPad Pro not getting stage manager, of course it must be due to wanting to drive device upgrades.
If Apple tries to enforce their rules regarding App Store purchases, of course it must be due to profit in mind. And if Apple doesn't do so, then it's framed as Apple giving preferential treatment to certain developers. If something will boost Apple's revenue, such as additional services, or ads, then Apple will do it for no reason than to pad their bottom line, no questions asked. Doubt is being cast on Apple's privacy-first mindset, with the critics insinuating that this is nothing more than a marketing ploy by Apple in recent years to make more money.
The problem with such criticism is that it are never viewed from the perspective of consumers, always the developer. Without us, the app ecosystem wouldn't be where it is today (no doubt developer support matters, but they wouldn't be where they are today without our patronage either).
Apple literally can't win in their eyes, and Apple isn't supposed to, because where else is the rage-clicks supposed to come from?
It stands remembering that Apple stands to earn much more money by keeping its users satisfied and engaged in its ecosystem. Of course Apple can always do better, but I continue to believe that these are all done with the consumer in mind. The truth will come out in time, and when it does, I can only wonder what goalpost the cynics will move on to next in a bid to criticise Apple.
How about just covering this whole issue objectively and rationally to begin with? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
