I hate ads. I love(d) apple for not bombarding users with adds and crap like that. I am willing to pay a premium for that. But I am definitely not willing to pay for being nagged by adds.

Apple is going downhill in many areas. Too bad. Wish it was a small company again that puts quality, not money, above all, putting their money into serving the customer with even higher quality.

Did Apple fans really think Tim Cook was not going to delve into the prospect of running ad's on Apple devices?? He has seen the millions and millions Google and Meta (formely Facebook Inc) make from advertising and he want's a piece of it.

Apple is in the business of making money, making it's shareholders happy. Ad's on Apple devices will become more and more common, get used to it people. Oh and as many many Apple fans have said in the past on similar things, if you do not like it there are always alternatives to chose from.

I get the feeling Tim Cook is focusing more on ad revenue now because not many Apple products are being purchased and thus Apple needs to find a way to plug up that revenue hole.

Just so we are clear, I am not against the idea of Apple going into ads, and your rationale for point 3 is just flat out wrong.

Reading through this thread and seeing the responses from MR members it is very clear you are in the minority here. Are you a disciple of the Cult of Apple (a true hardened devout fan/follower of Apple) or are you an Apple shareholder because your view/opinion is clearly not shared by the majority in here.

If what you mean by an apple fan is anybody that has bought or currently uses apple hardware than no, I did not think that Tim Cook would put more ads in than already exists.

If what you are implying is apple critics believe Tim Cook knows no boundaries, than no.

If Apple Maps ads get Timmy a bigger bonus, than apple is headed in the right direction.

Not a shareholder, nor do I consider myself part of the Apple cult. It's no small secret that the opinions here aren't really representative of sentiment towards Apple in general (a lot of hot takes regarding Apple have ended up aging pretty poorly over the years).

I posted a response earlier this morning which I will reiterate again here. Year after year, haters try (in vain) to paint Apple's endeavours as being lacklustre and lacking in innovation and year after year, the haters are proven wrong time and time again. We have seen the cynics move from one criticism of Apple to another over the last decade. First, it was the iPhone being too expensive. Then it was android's market share being so big, and the supposed "benefits" of android handsets (and android specifically) over iOS. Then the immense cynicism surrounding products like the apple watch and the AirPods which have gone on to become runaway successes. Or attempts to prop up smart speakers as the next computing paradigm (irrelevant because of smartphones and smartwatches), lack of folding phones (you all know my stance on this matter), or TV+ being nothing like Netflix (which is currently battling viewer backlash).

Now that Apple is clearly anything but doomed, the narrative is shifting to how Apple has too much power and *gasp* making way too much money.

And that to me is the biggest issue faced here. Just look at the numerous threads here over the last few months. When the iPhone 7 doesn't get iOS 16, it *must* be because Apple is trying to force iPhone upgrades to boost their bottom line. When the older iPad pros don't get stage manager, it *must* be because Apple is trying to force iPad upgrades to boost their bottom line. When Apple doesn't release a folding phone, it must be because they are utterly incapable of innovating and not because the idea of a folding phone is simply bad design? And if Apple does delve deeper into their ad foray, it *can* only be a blatant cash grab.

And when I provide explanations to the contrary, it *can* only be because I am either a sheep or a shareholder.

No other possibilities allowed or entertained?

Do you all not see the ludicrousness here? When everything that Apple does is being framed as a blatant money grab, cynics end up repeating the mistakes of the last decade and leave themselves unable to evaluate Apple's actions objectively. At the end of the day, the only people to lose out are the cynics who miss out on what could have been a much richer and more engaging discussion.

You have gone way off base to try and justify your 'positive' attitude towards Apple engaging in something that is widely unpopular with society which is tech companies pushing ad's on their consumer devices.

Peoples distain of ad's on their devices is well known and well documented via numerous forums. It is a topic that is well talked about and as such is almost impossible to ignore. Even in this thread there is a huge majority who are against ad's or even the increase of ad's on their devices and as such it is very clear to sense the very strong negative feelings and emotions of members in this thread with reagrds to ad's and then you come along with your post 'Just so we are clear, I am not against the idea of Apple going into ads,' which on the face of it shows you are in support of Apples approach to increase advertising on it's devices, which clearly goes against the theme of this thread which is 'MR members are against the idea'. Therefore it has to be said, knowing that the consensus is that MR members do not like Apples idea, why did you post an opposing view point? You knew exactly what would happen and then seem surprised at the outcome.

I realize the ads and tracking have been removed, but it's still Android at the heart of it, on a device designed and built for the lowest common denominator. I spent ~ 2-3 minutes going through the list of supported devices and most of them are 2019 and older. There are a few more recent Google devices, Pixel 5 something or other, and there may be more, but not knowing Android devices they. didn't jump out at me. Not saying I wouldn't go that route, but things would have to get pretty bad to jump ship to something like that. An ad or two in Maps isn't going to make me want to play with stuff like that. I have a 3D printer for tinkering. 😉

Can we be both? I started buying stock back in '99 because I loved the company, and felt that designing and building the best "things" was a winning combination for financial success.

Clearly these laws are forcing apple for forego $$$, from their ip, which they developed.

That's not forcing them to give away IP for $0. It's forcing Apple to not engage in anticompetitive behavior that can stifle competition and innovation in a space where they are part of a duopoly.

They are forcing apple to open their ecosystem in a way, that imo, is permanently damaging.

It’s forcing Apple to not engage in anticompetitive behavior that can stifle competition and innovation. Apple having to face more competition in iOS can encourage/force them to make their products better which is good for Apple users and the market.

No. The ecosystem is no longer Apple and Apple doesn't control it.

Apple absolutely can control it by only offering things like exclusive apps on their devices, and thereby make the products unique in the market.

Now the obvious is finally said. Apple should be able to control it's ecosystem.

Apple does have control, and can make it unique in the market. They just can’t engage in anticompetitive behavior that stifles competition and innovation.

But not part of a smartphone duopoly.

Which is why the regulations focus on the OS where Apple (iOS) is part of a duopoly.

My opinion, is the opposite will happen. A race to the bottom.

It is not a race to the bottom. Apple can still make software/apps for their devices that are unique in the market and potentially sets them above other devices. Just as others can or will try to do. It's a race to the top.

I guess we disagree on…everything. Back to my original opinion which is they might not have to resort to such measures if their ip was being regulated away from them. It’s the customers that are losers.

My membership agreement allows discussion of said points? I’m not in these discussions to be popular, I’m in them to communicate my viewpoint.

I am just reminded of the parable of the king and the poisoned well, that's all.

I don't think people here are as much against ads as much as they are just against anything that Apple does in general. Which goes back to my earlier statement about how the narrative has shifted to Apple being too successful and "greedy", and how anything and everything that Apple does these days is automatically treated with utmost skepticism and automatically assumed to be nothing more than a cynical money grab, regardless of merit.

Apple initially introduced ATT to give consumers a say in whether they wanted to be tracked across apps or not, yet that messaging seems to have somehow been perverted (or hijacked) into a seemingly pathological hatred of all ads in general. I believe that Apple is in the best position to do ads "right" by respecting our privacy, yet still giving developers a way to reach consumers, by virtue of controlling the entire ecosystem and not being wholly reliant on ad revenue for their earnings.

I maintain that Apple ultimately stands to earn much more money by keeping their users satisfied and engaged with its ecosystem (including the App Store and privacy features like ATT), which is not a bad thing insofar that our wants are aligned, and I simply cannot get behind this current ongoing narrative that Apple only cares about money to the detriment of everything else.

So Apple Maps has yet to include features such as Look Around (Street View), Flyover, Augmented Walking Directions, and Detailed City Experience beyond a select number of cities. Now they want to insert ads to their inferior product?

Are you serious? Most people who hang out here do it because they use or like/are interested in Apple. Interpreting criticism from users as "hate" is just stupid. Of course, you have to be able to criticize a company when they make bad decisions - just as we praise them for good decisions.

That Apple abandoned Intel for its own in-house processor, good. When Apple used Butterfly keyboard, bad. Criticism often leads to improvement. There is even prize money awarded to people who can hack a system.

How would Apple be better than Google if they start advertising? Google doesn't sell your data or is involved in scandals like Facebook which apparently abuses its data collection.

Furthermore, there are two aspects of advertising, those who consider it to violate one's privacy and those who are simply bothered by it. I'm both. I can't even watch cable TV anymore and those ads don't even invade my privacy the way online ads do.

I have not tested LingeageOS but I have uninstalled everything from Google and use F-Droid + Aurora Store (no Google account). Some apps from F-Droid are sometimes better than the originals. For example, NewPipe instead of YouTube. No advertisement! I can subscribe without having an account, remove the trending feed, etc. 👌

Nonsense. People are disappointed or even angered by the possibility of ads including, and perhaps especially, Apple fans. This is not about people being against anything Apple does, it's about people being specifically against Apple injecting (more) advertising.

Only the most extreme Apple fan boys who basically think Apple can do no wrong would feel the comments here are unusual or unfair. The same types of comments/complaints have been expressed on here about Google and advertising, Disney and advertising, Netflix and advertising, Facebook and advertising, etc. There's no reason similar negative feelings wouldn't be expressed in this thread about Apple and advertising.

Actually, with smart tvs or watching online with a pad or computer or phone they can monitor what you are watching including commercials. They don’t know yet if you are physically watching at that moment but they know user X is logged in and watched these commercials without skipping.

Making money can never be at the detriment to the public good, nor their customers. This is often a very blurred line that both sides skate. but here, Apple becoming more and more like Meta and Google are lines that shouldn't be crossed (at least not to many Apple consumers). Hell, given some of the Apple communities I've seen, Apple shouldn't even joke or suggest those ideas, let alone going ahead with them. We'll see what road Apple takes down the line, but I'm willing to bet if they do end up becoming more and more like Meta and Google, will you still say "I am proud to use Apple products?".

Yes, I am quoting you, from some post you made years ago, because it did stand out.

I know that, but I was referring to regular cable TV. Currently don't own a TV and my old TV was not smart.

Then you don't have to log in or connect your smart TV to the Internet either.

What kind of thing do you skip commercials on? YouTube? Because I have never had commercials on paid streaming services.
