I'm sure it's ready to go, but it seems like the car makers don't want it.
Apple would release
I think that CarPlay has turned into a power struggle. A phone could easily take total control of the car, if designers allow it. But automakers obviously don't want that. Hence we have absurdities like every car having a USB port, but no car having a clear place to put your phone.

I wonder if this is why Apple tried to make a car themselves? Was it some kind of bargaining chip?
I have thought that project Titan served two purposes. 1) if enough OEMs wouldn't get on board, Apple would compete directly. The actual release of such a car never made sense to me as it would destroy the margins Apple gets. 2) Provide the cover to develope technologies that can be incorporated into OEMs that will be high margine.

I can’t say that I care about the timing because the truth is I really don’t want my car’s instrument panel being taken over by what some Apple geek (who probably doesn’t even drive) thinks it should look like.
Apple has plans so that UI can be greatly customized by the OEM. I beleive the reason for the deep centralized integration must serve a greater purpose.

I love their concept for a carplay 2.0.

But I would prefer if I could get a blank screen in my car and configure it myself and not leave it up to some random car manufacturers junior designer to create a "unique" look. I know there are easy OBD software with rpi and a screen that can do this. But I want a built in model with apples design philosophy, and the added adaptability.

If I can have my phone, go to a rental or borrow a car and get my exact layout I am comfortable with I would be so happy.
