Mobile developer here.
It's astounding how many people do not get Tim Sweeney and where he's coming from, assuming everything just has to be about the money. It doesn't. He just doesn't want a future where every computing device (mobile or not) is a ****ing walled garden with the gatekeeper taking 30% of sales for eternity (1.5 billions per month currently for the app store !), also dictating rules on what is allowed to run and what is not. He considers consoles as a special case as they are sold at a loss and the manufacturer makes up for it with games sales, although do not believe a minute that Epic is paying 30% to Sony and Microsoft and you can bet they have negotiated something better.
Also Epic is taking only 12% on the Epic Game Store (on PC) for not hammering game developers whose life is already difficult. They are a game developer, thus know the difficulties of that industry.
It's easy to hate on Epic but people are really missing the point... Maybe the day Apple Silicon devices are locked to hell iOS style, people will start to understand.

If it wasn't for these walled gardens there would be no market for you sell your games...

lmao oh my god this whole thing is so ******* stupid Epic needs to get over themselves and chill

If Sweeney doesn't end up having to step down as CEO (or isn't outright fired) over this whole debacle, which Epic is going to end up losing in court, I'd be very surprised.

Why the heck is Epic Games pulling so much attention? It's just a gaming company. No one would die if it disappeared tomorrow. Are real adults actually defending the right to play Fortnite on iOS? When compared to the size and scope of the App Store, Epic Games honestly doesn't seem all that important. Fortnite is just a freaking game. It's not even something useful like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro. Why aren't the whiners and anti-trust people going after the pharmaceutical companies who overcharge for medication for critically-ill patients? Apparently, drug companies can charge whatever they want for medicine, but Apple can't charge a 30% fee for a game without involving the courts. It's a crazy world.

Something I’ve not seen discussed here when talking about the Apple - Epic battle. And that is the likelihood that Epic will not continue to have such a huge following generating millions in revenue forever. We’ve seen this happen before with what became big game developers with HOT game apps that just kept growing, but then people stopped playing them and moved on to something new and the company fell out of favor.

Epic likely recognizes this potential, which would be one reason they want their own game / App Store, so they can get cuts of other developer’s apps, which reduces risk with their own titles. The lawsuit is absolutely all about money for Epic, and their future survival once Fortnite isn’t the money-making hit is has been.

The developer of a game glamorizing and ritualizing murder claims to be a defender of technology's virtues? Not using technology to cure disease, mitigate the damage to our environment, provide food and safe drinking water to the world's masses -- but a petty game focused on killing other people and taking their stuff. Tony Soprano was more charitable.

Epic is running scared because Fortnite is on a decline and they have no other game to depend on.

"Information wants to be free."

Is that the founding ideals of the tech world that Epic is talking about? You know, when people printed out a copy of Altair Basic and distributed it for free? Or were the ideals the ones espoused by Bill Gates, that people should pay for software?

More info:

This is making less and less sense. I am starting to think it has to be personal, and not as a crusade against evil, but someone at Apple turned Sweeney down for a date. Or worse, insulted his...

I think Apple perfectly understands the founding ideals of the tech world ... make as much money as possible. The tech world never was a charity organization, after all.

Tim EPIC ... seriously? Did Tim Apple cut your way with his car recently or maybe even stole your parking lot?
It's disgusting for all...

While I disagree with Epic, I do hope they win.

The whole Apple Sign in thing is something that sits next to MacBook Keyboard Fiasco in my book.

Being a mobile phone manager for 6 Years, I had to do dozens and dozens of phone wipes on Android phones do to the customer downloading some virus/malware/hacking software running on their phone. All of them did not have their data backed up loosing personal information and would get angry, cry and be frustrated. The only problems I would have with a iPhone if it was to old or the customer forgot their pin codes or a Apple ID.

Interesting how Epic calculates their royalties on the Unreal Engine 4:

"The royalty is based on gross revenue from end users, regardless of whether you sell your Product to end users directly, self-publish via the App Store or any similar store, or work with a publisher. The following simplified example illustrates the application of the royalty to gross sales: if your Product earns $10 on the App Store, Apple may pay you $7 (having deducted 30% as a distribution fee), but your royalty to Epic would still be 5% of $10 (or $0.50)."

I remember that Epic used to ask for 25% royalties back in the days of the Unreal Engine 3. And not too long ago they charged 30% for sales on their Unreal Engine Marketplace, which got only reduced due to the success of Fortnite: https://www.pcgamer.com/fortnite-is...ving-unreal-marketplace-creators-a-big-raise/

If someone tells me they're doing something for the principal of it, because it's the right thing to do, they probably shouldn't begin by breaking the rules and violating their contract. In my opinion you can't fight your crusade for good when you're starting from a morally bankrupt position. Had they not broken any rules first, I might have taken them more seriously. But don't break the rules and tell me that makes you the good guy. That's going to be a very hard sell.

I've always had a soft spot for Epic. I remember defending them in some newsgroup way back in the early '90s. Somehow Mark Rein saw my post and reached out to me directly and even gave me a free game (Jill of the Jungle). This was prior to Unreal back when they were doing side-scrollers. Sad to see how time and piles of money have changed things.

I'm not sure why so many here are acting with such tribalism. What I have discovered recently is the Macrumors forum "Ignore" button, it's getting exercised a lot. I wish the mods would step in, tbh.

I know Epic wants a slice of the pie, even though they are not seeking monetary recompense for this lawsuit, it would give them the ability to earn much more revenue in the future.

And I also believe Apple is acting in a monopolistic fashion by controlling the full stack of the iPhone, a fairly ubiquitous device.

I don’t know who first said it but “A bad lawyer can draw out a court case needlessly for months. A good one can do so indefinitely.“

I'd love to see Apple's annual legal expenses. I cannot imagine the billing - they must have incredibly staffed in-house billing departments just to maintain the out-sourced legal counsel.

Well stated! I've been careful not to voice any opinions on this matter as it's become a bit of a pissing contest for some on Macrumors but this sums it up well.
