Upsetting news. I want sleep tracking but don't like wearing my Apple Watch to bed. I want tracking during the day without needing to wear the Apple Watch. I don't want to give my health data to Oura and pay a subscription.

Rings are gimmicks. I hope Apple never does one.
Doubtful that they would. If it can’t come close to matching the Apple Watch in biometrics, and let’s be fair, none of those trashy rings can, then why would they?

Can a ring store a to do list? My Gold Wedding ring easily stores everything I need to know…. I only need it connected to a certain someone. And the range goes for many many kilometres, no subscription needed. 😃

I think it's one of the best decisions Apple has made lately, akin to ditching the Apple Car. I used to leave the watch on the charger overnight, but I bought the wife a series 9 ($299 on Amazon), and took her series 6. Now I wear my series 7 during the day, and the 6 overnight. I charge the one I'm not wearing until I put it on.
…The Ultra eliminates the need to do all of that

Apple could take the health sensors from the watch, and improve its battery and other features. Besides, the back of the wrist isn’t optimal for taking measurements, like how pulse ox is often taken at fingertips. This way, people can get health metrics without a watch, and a more affordable watch is available for “tech bros”. Apple gets to sell two devices, so a win for them. Both devices have better battery life than the nebulous “all-day” claim, consumers win.

I agree on your hesitation to declare features Apple would do better. However, selling the ring without a subscription beats Oura. Thankfully, insurance can cover Oura subscription costs (insurance isn’t entirely useless for once!)
If it can significantly improve health sensing, that might be reason enough for Apple to make a ring. Even if Apple can't add anything very special to it, they may do it just so health metrics are better, because I don't think they'd open up the Health app to third party device data (or do they?).
True, removing health sensors from the Watch might give space for other improvements, but I don't think that would be a strong motivator for Apple unless they really hit a wall with progress/sales. Also I'm sure they would continue to sell a Watch with health sensors because not all users will want to wear a ring.

Somewhat. At some point, you have to take it off to charge. I don't, since one watch always has power, and they share virtually everything. I switch watches when I get up, and my sleep data is right there on the watch that was charging overnight, not on my wrist.

They really don’t make sense at the price points These other companies are selling them at. I would be interested if it allowed me to take an EKG without needing to touch the crown of the watch. Otherwise, why bother when you have a watch

I could see them make a ring that pairs with an apple watch. (instead of replacing it) That way you could have all night monitoring while your watch charges near by. It could also possibly enhance some current monitoring and accuracy when wearing both.

A shame. I'd love an Apple Ring for the battery life. I imagine Apple could bring a load of ecosystm features to it - for example, they could incorporate a capacative sensor to allow rubbing your thumb over the ring to change the volume of your music, fast forward your videos or scroll through lists on your phone. If it could include an NFC chip for Apple Pay that would be the icing on the cake.

NFC for Apple Pay will be game changing but I imagine battery life will take a massive hit. I got a smart ring so I don’t have to charge daily like I do for my Apple Watch.

Unless I’m missing something, I think this is the clearest example of something Apple won’t/shouldn’t do. It’s redundant with the Apple Watch, but much smaller, which means less space for sensors, no active UI, no room for significant innovation…

I think it’s not the Board that you can blame. It’s the leader not leading anything but the money. Tim doesn’t care what we want. He only cares about the money. I truly believe that.
It seems like Tim cares much more than anyone here about what people want. Even if you thought he only cares about money, that money comes from making customers happy.

A ring that pairs with a watch that pairs with a phone… nah get out of here.

There are other smart rings besides oura you know.

There are better sleep trackers out there than a stupid ring or a [brand] watch. Sure a ring might be marginally more comfortable than a watch for some. But if people want a sleep tracker for whatever reason they think improves their life, then get a real one.
