Apple Has No Plans to Support Siri on Older Devices

Besides the camera, SIRI is the only thing worth while on the 4S. Take that away and you have a really really lame update.

Again, as I've said a hundred times:

Release it as an official Apple app for $19.99.

Enjoy your incremental millions in revenue, AAPL.

Now that He's dead this is all up for debate

a dual core procecer (it beats all other chipsets)one of the best if not the best gpu on the market first blue tooth 4.0 phone HSDPA + and you say it is lame:rolleyes:

peeved

I agree, release it as an upgrade maybe, because I'm a little peeved I can't get it on my ipad2 at almost $700 with tax that I just bought. Never Mind the 17" MBP I bought the same day. I mean for $700 you can buy a pretty kick ass 17" PC Laptop. I think after enough years of this even us fanboys will start to revolt being toyed with. The economy being what it is, even I might skip the iPad 2.5 or 3 or whatever it's going to be.

Why not? It asks a server when I want to make an appointment/play a song/do anything that should be localized (and by that extension, requiring greater processing). Lame.

Siri is a joke right now, I only use it to dictate text messages while driving:eek:

Siri is great because I can easily set alarms for 3am on other people's phones really quickly :)

Apple doesn't like releasing half-assed software.. so i don't think this is going to be released for any current iOS devices.

yes, siri was ported to the iPhone 4, but we still don't know how well it would really run on the device since it had trouble communicating with the servers.

you're mistaken. Siri isn't just integrated with native apps, it's integrated with the whole operating system.

you think that was done for free? Apple's gotta make the money back somehow, and they're doing that with the iPhone 4S.

plus, no one (not even me) is entitled to Siri unless you own an iPhone 4S. you were never promised anything, so people really need to stop bringing this up

You're missing the point. I, and others, aren't saying they we are "entitled" to Siri. I am pointing out that Apple's reasons that it simply won't work on older phones don't seem to fly.

Siri was not ported to the 4 -- It was (in it's original form) originally available for the iPhone 4, and others, long before the 4S was announced. It has been available as an APP in the Apple App Store for many many months. It was pulled literally during the 4S introduction. I had it on my 4. I have the new Siri on my 4S. The Siri for my 4 ceased to work the day after the 4S was released, and it had a message to that effect.

Here is a link to an article about Apple disabling the original Siri: http://techcrunch.com/2011/10/04/th...ets-pulled-from-the-app-store-servers-killed/

Now, I'm not trying to say whether I agree with Apple or not with regards to pulling the app (personally, I think they could have left the original Siri available, or simply not have disabled it for those who already had the app.) However, I am saying that I disagree with the official statement that older phones won't run it.

Apple says things and does another all the time, the biggest one I can remember is when the iMac G4 came out and Steve said that it was the death of the CRT at Apple and then they released the giant eMac with a CRT display. Or we may just have to face the fact that Apple is turning into the next Microsoft.

Did you actually think about what you were going to say before posting this?

Hoo boy...so you seriously don't realize that the old Siri and the new Siri are totally different apps?

Siri really isn't that big of a deal. She's fun to play with for a few minutes, then you realize she doesn't really improve your productivity much for the time it takes you to activate her, talk to her, and confirm things with her.

They might very well do that when it is ready. Right now, it is still a beta and clearly not ready. Limiting it to the 4s is a good way to control access. 9 times out of ten, all I can get from Siri is "sorry, but I am not able to connect right now." That won't sell to happy customers for $20. Even when it works, its probably not going to be worth $20, but it is going to be worth something. $9.99 maybe.

Can't argue with the GPU and dual processor, plus Bluetooth 4.0 upgrades ( they are good ).. the camera is really quite good too... but HSPDA+ phones have been on the market for quite some time now!

Boooooooooo :(

Well, they have to pay Wolfram Alpha for their services and run the Siri server. It's disappointing but expected that they wouldn't let you use it on their old devices. Plus, the 4s doesn't have much going for it without Siri.

Deal breaker?

Is not having Siri really that important? I forget that it's there and rarely use it as it's just another app that I forget to use.
This is just another way Apple forces some to upgrade to the latest and greatest.
You can still sell the 3GS or iPhone 4 for enough to pay for the 4GS upgrade.

ebay is your friend........LOL

It has been discussed that the true reason for them to limit it to one device like that is due to the load placed on their servers. I think that makes sense considering the recent downtime Siri has been experiencing. Perhaps the 4S alone is pushing the limits.

Hmm, I don't think that's the case. Honestly, with $81 billion in the bank, building extra servers to handle the load shouldn't be a problem at all. I mean, when iCloud went live, they didn't stagger it... all of the iOS devices, old and new, were allowed to backup to iCloud from day 1. Of course, some experienced trouble while doing that, but the point is that all iOS devices were given access to iCloud.

This just doesn't add up that the servers are the reason for Siri only being iPhone 4S. This is purely a marketing decision so that they can give people an extra reason to get the iPhone 4S over any other iPhones or phones. Purely marketing. Anyway, that's what I think.

HSPDA+ doesn't even enter the picture when looking at iPhone 4S.

If you are looking at just the radio to judge iPhone I have to say you are out of the loop. IPhone is about having a computer in your pocket, in that regard the 4s is an excellent upgrade.

Oh really. Heh. Dual core processor and much better still and video camera, faster memory..I'd say you have some research to do.

Yes because the first thing anyone thinks about on a phone is its performance specs
In reality, only the features really matter. Isn't Apple based off of a better experience rather than better specs? :apple:
Look at the Droid X. It had better specs than the iPhone, and it could technically do more, but it was still a piece of @#$%.

No clue here either.

IPhone 4S is a significant upgrade. There is no other way to look at it.

I partially agree with you as it's a new app, but the new server farms should certainly be able to handle the load.

This isn't dial-up days....and the bandwidth/server capacity is certainly there.

$19.99 / $9.99 / whatever the cost, it's clear Apple is waiting on 4S sales to slow before entertaining the idea of a Siri app for purchase.

This is a mistake, IMO. Strike while the iron is hot. Those who have already decided not to jump into a 4S represent a market ready for revenue (for AAPL at least). Wait too long and the novelty is gone (and we all just upgrade eventually where all iPhones have Siri standard).

There is a real revenue opportunity here that is lost due to Apple's stubbornness. Make the app revenue now before Siri is just another standard app across all models.
