Can't wait for Clash of Clans or some other freemium trash to be at the top of most search terms.

It is not like that already?!?

(At least it is when I look for Strategy Games, my favorite game class...:()

Personally, I wish Apple had not removed the option to browse by free - or paid apps in iTunes. Some of the more interesting apps in my collection were discovered by just skimming through those results.

The amount of apps that are based on in app purchases is beyond annoying. It makes me not want to bother buying any more apps. I realize they make developers a lot of cash, but I seriously would rather pay upfront cost. also there needs to be a way to return apps. I have got burned bad buying apps for as much as 15 dollars that work like total crap and I want my money back. Just make it like amazon books and make you have to return within 2 days or something.

Always remember: whatever you think Apple should improve, it can always get worse too!

Pay for search placement? Make it even more expensive to be an app developer?

Apple is out of it's fucXing mind. They should be figuring out how to help innovative, independent developers make money.

The incremental revenue vs. the strategic importance having a healthy 3rd party app ecosystem is not even close.

If they are confused by this, look to the iPad ecosystem.

Paid search sounds very gross but if they actually removed all the clones and scam apps I would be all for it.

It's very easy to get a refund. When you get your bill email there is a place at the bottom that says report a problem. Just tell them the problem and you'll get the refund pretty quick.

apple is rich enough. they're starting to get greedy.

This is why I just want them to get their first year over year decline over and done with so that maybe the ridiculous, all-consuming pressure on them will ease off a bit. From the media, from haters, from their shareholders - everyone is watching, and the pressure is enormous. It means that stuff like this could be trotted out to earn them more $$ in spite of their current shape as a company.

If they finally post a decline then maybe they can go back to at least high expectations rather than Insanely-Over-The-Top-Because-You're-Apple expectations.

Maybe Apple should kick that app team out since the app store had been acting like a highway robbery.
"most demanding game......$29.99"
I'll rather siri find me a game.
"hey siri...i like this certain type of games from certain company and hopefully free or cheap."
Siri: "here is the game that you like...-beep-"

What does the app team have to do with the app store acting like highway robbery? Apple doesn't set the prices on apps, the devs do...

As an Indie developer and as an App Store customer, I would like to see:

1. A section of the App Store that is updated every week and is dedicated to indie developers and lesser known small companies. They could even do an indie game of the week promo for that section of the App Store.

2. App search results should be ordered based on reviews, key words and updates. If an app hasn't been updated in over 2 years, it should get knocked down a few spots. This will encourage developers (myself included) to keep their apps updated.

3. Have a search option to filter by price and filter out games with in app purchases.

4. Allow developers to respond to reviews!!!! This is one thing I really like about the Google Play store. When an Android user gives one of my games a bad review, I can respond to him and let him know that the issue he encountered has been fixed and an update is on the way. I have been able to make quite a few 1 star reviews turn into 5 star reviews just by responding to complaints.

5. To go along with number 4, it would be nice if Apple gave developers an option to set e-mail notifications for when a written review is submitted.

Simply paying for a top spot in the search results is not good enough. After all, what happens if someone else comes along and pays more (EA, Square-Enix).

I don't think I like the idea of seeing what someone was willing to pay for being at the top, why bother reading "top apps" or "featured" then.....

Paid search results is definitely NOT the way to get apps noticed. It will further the cause of the "big guys" and continue pushing our small little apps deeper and deeper down in the pile.

What we need are people who, like in the iTunes store, find good talent and promote that. Find apps that are actually GOOD and push the bad ones down instead of finding the apps that have the most money in the top of the list.

They already have this in place of sorts! Think of the featured/recommended apps you see on the store from their editorial team.

That's it. Richer gets richer, and poorer gets poorer, no matter where you live. No wonder why rich people could save more while poor people are to spend more.

Next time, maybe I can see my Cinderella Girls game at top 10 free game chart at App Store all the time? Although this is not a funny thing.

And people thought turning over App Store to Phil Schiller would be an improvement. Notice the story said the person running this team previously ran iAd. Imagine if Apple announced this at WWDC. The best thing that could happen is if the entire room was silent.

Yea I saw that iAd part and it scared me. iAd: **** from start to finish.

More devs? No. Everyone know apps for iOS make the most money.

If big corporations can pay to get top spot, this would have negative effect to small developpers. If small developpers cannot make enough money, then they would unlikely to develop for App Store anymore.

I hope this is not true.

if they are literally paying humans to curate and create playlists on apple music why dont they do the same for apps if they cant tackle it with a technology solution

Gruber nails it:

This sounds like a terrible idea. The one and only thing Apple should do with App Store search is make it more accurate. They don’t need to squeeze any more money from it. More accurate, reliable App Store search would help users and help good developers. It’s downright embarrassing that App Store search is still so bad. Google web search is better for searching Apple’s App Store than the App Store’s built-in search. That’s the problem Apple needs to address.

I really hope that this is a false alarm.
Otherwise we (app consumers) are going to be faced with the "washing detergent" crap apps on the App store.
The simple economics of this are the same with TV advertised products.
The higher your gross margin the more you can afford to buy up all the air time and this is invariably the cheapest to produce products sold at the highest price and greatest volume.
I can only hope that as Apple dearly treasures it's quality control and brand value they remember the quality of Apps people install on their devices reflects on them and not just App publishers.
Doing a Google isn't a good move. Just look at the **** you sometimes get in search results because all the good stuff isn't paying Google enough to feature.

The cost of getting a top 5 placement in search will have to be better than the 30% Apple makes in it's earnings cut from the incumbent top 5. Otherwise Apple is shooting themselves in the foot.
If they do a Google then it's more likely to be a side bar type of "sponsored link" type of ad for 1 or 2.
Not a complete take over of the top 5/10.

The differentiation between Apple and its competitors is lessening each day.
