Pretty mind-boggling numbers though.

It's also important for employee morale.
Get over it Tim Cook is the big boss now, he managed to make Apple bigger than Jobs ever did. Cook is the future now, and he is doing a fantastic job. Apart from getting wearables started he also managed to get rid of racists, xenophobes and other idiots from their customer base (bye!!!) .And no mention of Steve Jobs?
Without him, we would have no iPhone, iPad, Mac or iPod.
Thank you, Steve, for your genius. I miss you.
If every iPhone rang at full volume at the same time, you could hear it on the moon ...maybe.

The only colossal flops are comments like these.Exactly. Apple's current success is tied directly to the products Steve introduced when he was alive. The stuff that Tim Cook introduced (Apple Watch, iPad Pro, etc) have been colossal flops.
"News of Apple selling 1 billion iPhones spells doom for Apple. Tune in at 11 for more."
It's a stat, that's all it is. And, as you mentioned, it doesn't comment on or contribute to anything about the future.Like any stat of this nature, its backwards looking. We know they've had a good 8 years, fueled largely by the iPhone. I'm wondering if the best is indeed behind them.

I'd expect glitter bombs and dancing girls
This is like when Mcdonalds said 99 billion served. Lets focus on the number - not what we selling now, or what we once represented - Just focus on the number. Apple sounds (and acts) more like Microsoft from the 90's every passing day.
And no mention of Steve Jobs?

In a statement, Cook called the iPhone one of the most successful, world-changing products in history
