“See you in court” is what Apple will say.

Not sure Apple will want to be racking up $1bn daily fines that will need to be settled if they eventually lose in court. Especially in the EU, where it's a lot harder to win on technical compliance as spirit of the law and intent is also an important factor in legal judgements. It would be a helluva gamble.

This hag and the whole EU cabal needs to pound sand.

"A number of Apple issues"...translation we're short on cash so we need to go to the ATM - Apple Teller Machine and invent some more laws we can retroactively charge Apple with.

Help me understand this. The DMA mandates that Apple must open up an alternate App Store on Apple's devices. Additionally, Apple may not make any money from the alternate App Store because of its gatekeeper status. If this is so, who maintains the alternate App Store? Who maintains its security? What are its costs? What are the costs to Apple? Can trojan apps in the alternate App Store integrate and infect the Apple ecosystem?
There's the way Apple is doing it, which is a mess that I'm not even going to try to explain, and the way they could do it, which is the same as on Mac...

MacOS has 3 levels of security: 1) App Store Apps, 2) Developer Signed Apps, and 3) Unsigned Apps.

MacOS allows 1 and 2 by default, and 3 with some extra steps. All Apple has to do on the iPhone is allow 1) and 2) instead of just 1. Third party app stores (and apps) would be developer signed and if they are found to be hosting malware or CSAM, Apple could revoke their developer certificate, which prevents them from signing new apps and prevents new installs. Additionally, Apple already has tools to remove malware directly from macs and iPhones should the need arise. It's not complicated and doesn't require an exhaustive review process on Apple's part. They only pretend it's complicated because Apple wants 30% of everything and this solution doesn't give them that.

Out of curiosity , why isn’t an App Store analogous to a retail store? When you ‘open’ up shop, you pay either a lease or buy a space . So if you have an App that you want to sell / have ‘items’ to sell, it’s a store. Hence, you pay rent.

Hosting a website isn’t free either , so those who get apps from a website on a Mac, they pay for a ‘domain’ or w/e / maintenance . No?

Why is the App Store being different ? Genuine question, because nothing is free outside the App Store in the commerce/ecommerce world to get started .

"Apple shares fell 1.1% on Tuesday, giving the iPhone maker a $3.29 trillion market value." Which made them drop below MSFT again.

I know that they fell today, but most of the movement of both Apple and Microsoft would typically be considered common noise. Stocks move up and down all the time, generally with the overall market or sector. Just saying that the reason it is even a conversation is because Nvidia is up 181% YTD.

Out of curiosity, what would you think if Microsoft took 30% of everything you did on Windows? Sounds absurd right? It is. iOS has as many active devices as there are Windows 10 and 11 computers, and is equally as absurd.

There's lot's of free stuff for Windows and Mac that you can download from websites. Sure someone pays for the website, but no one tells them where to go to buy the domain and hosting. Plenty of options, not just Apple.

If you want to make the App Store analogous to a retail store, it's a State operated store in a communist country. There are no other options and the state has full control over what you can buy.

As an aside, I find countries as a good stand-in for operating systems. You can move/switch, but it's a major pain in the ass.

All of that is built into the cost of buying a $999+ iPhone.
Yes, that's it, of course. According to the DMA, and you, Apple has no say or control over the apps downloaded into a user's iPhone because the user spent $999 for it. That is not true. Apple does have a say, and Apple does have control over the content of my device that I paid $999 on. More, I would prefer Apple to defend the content it has created for my phone, and continue to control it over a government agency that seems to have ulterior motives. What do you suppose the DMA commissioners plan to do with all of this extraordinary wealth they would like to take from Apple?

I personally don’t plan on side loading apps. But at what point is Apple just going to have to open up iOS to be like macOS where I can download any app I wanted from any source without Apple involvement.
Why do people defend Apple other than shareholders? Customers are far better off having options. Apple’s closed system is bad for consumers. Tim’s AAPL only cares about shareholders and executives. People need to wake up.

I also would not personally want to sideload, but I can see companies like Facebook not even putting their apps in the App Store so they can screw the system.
