In terms of performance, its a major upgrade....DOUBLE the CPU and DOUBLE the graphics performance is a substantial upgrade in less than a year...Not to mention, the old one is now discontinued while the Ipad 2 continues to be offered...Folks are scrambling to sell their ipad 3 for the new one now and prices are dropping fast....Most likely the new ipad will be continued for sale much like the ipad 2 when they do the next upgrade...

Nope you're both wrong. It's the same thing.

iPad 3 . . . 3rd generation it's the third iPad no matter what you call it.

No, we are right. Do you call the new Nano the iPod Nano 8? No.. it's just iPod Nano.. but it's the 8th generation.

Furthermore.. the iPhone 5 by your logic is the 5th iPhone.. oh wait, it isn't.

a fancy new smaller charger

A fancy new same since the original iPhone charger with 12W/2.4A instead of 10W/2.1A which can actually charge the iPad while in use. The battery of the iPad seems pretty underpowered with the 10W charger if you compare the temperature of it with the original iPad while charging.

Keep in mind that the 12W charger turns your iPhone into a cooking device, use 5W/1A only.

Funny how it's basically what i've been saying.

"So why did Apple choose to update it so soon after the last model? Perhaps it’s because Microsoft are launching their Surface tablet. Maybe Google’s rumoured Nexus 10 Android tablet has Apple worried. To be honest, nobody knows. The only thing I can tell you for certain is that iPad 3 owners everywhere are not at all happy.

The rumored Google 10 is supposed to be impressive hardware wise with a higher resolution than the current iPad.

You guys are nuts. Don't you think they have a good reason not to use the A6?
It either cost to much or the battery life dropped below 10 hours ( i'll bet the later)

Nah I disagree I read today it got mixed reviews..can't see the Microsoft tablet doing much Windows phone has not really took off either.

All those articles are interesting though. Most agree the Ipad mini was expected, Ipad 4 was not needed and it will annoy fans.

How will Apple respond? If Ipad 5 arrives soon thinner, lighter it will please Ipad 3 owners but Ipad 4 owners will then feel annoyed like Ipad 3 owners now.

Even though I don't feel ripped off this sums up how I feel. ;)

"Bringing out an iPad 4 now also seems to us to be setting a dangerous precedent as potential customers may be more wary of rushing out to buy the latest version when it launches, just in case Apple has something to top it a few months later."

Interesting..I mean Iphone 5 has been a success..Ipad mini might do ok but i think there's a real upset about Ipad 4 here.

"But what is worrying is that Apple at present don't seem too fussed about innovating. The iPad Mini is chasing a market dominated by Android tablets"

That has been my concern for a long time and it's becoming more apparent that it's beginning to take hold at Apple.

As i say..these tablets ain't really selling if they are people ain't using them much hence Ipad's web dominance as said at the conference.

Apple needed a 4" Iphone but I don't think they had to have Ipad mini.

Yes I see what you are saying but they churned out the Ipad mini because there is small tablets on the shelves..but there not selling..why not wait until they sell like hot cakes?

I see lots of people reading books on Kindles (ereaders) not the tablet one.

Duh yeah because the tablet ones aren't so great. For that size I only used a Nook tablet instead of a reader because I found I just don't like the e-ink thing (yah in bright sunlight, it's ok) but I have so wanted Apple to fill in that slot between iPhone / iPod touch and iPad!

Further, I don't care that the initial iPad mini model is more cousin to the iPad 2 than the 3, because my larger iPad is still the original iPad. I'm satisfied with the initial mini spec, not waiting for the likely bump soon, I'm all in on Friday's pre-order of the mini. I'm not a very demanding consumer of chip cycles on any of these smaller devices, so the A5 chip is fine for my purposes. Will I like to upgrade to the newest large iPad? Absolutely. That thing I'll make work harder so the upgrade sounds great to me.

As far as waiting for someone else's product to sell like hotcakes? Seems counterintuitive. If you believe the niche exists and you have what to fill it with, get it out there and light up the marketplace. Let the other guy wonder wha' hoppen?!

FYI: it's not called the iPad 4... It is the "iPad with Retina Display" officially. :)

It's called the iPad (4th generation) officially.

----------

The 4th Gen iPad would not have been completely engineered in seven months. They would have known about the 4th Gen iPad at the 3rd Gen iPad announcement (and knew that it wouldn't be too far off)... Personally, I think they should have just held it off for that extra seven months.

From another article, it may severely slow down iPhone 4S sales because people know that the 30-pin connector is going to be obsolete.

----------

I don't see it on the US website. You gotta understand that this is a different Apple post Steve Jobs. They are now reacting more to the competition, making goofball marketing decisions and suing anyone who they think is a threat to their core business.

All of my concerns post Steve Jobs are beginning to come true. The only way Apple will make me reconsider is if they come out with some totally new kickass product. All i'm seeing is rehashed products. And NO the iPad Mini is not fresh. :p
The new iMac seems to be quite iconic.

But don't we see this continuing? Who's going to be shocked when an iPad Mini Retina drops in March and all those people who rushed out to buy the original Mini this holiday season feel duped?

Apple really could have held out on the iPad refresh and added a couple of more things and put out a March release. But they couldn't resist the easy cash grab of putting something out before the holiday season....even though they are going the iPhone 5 and Mini guarantee an amazingly profitable couple quarters.

But why do it? As one of the comments wrote on the post you link, Apple has a lot of 'fans' (note the OP didn't use customers) that will blindly line up and buy every single time.

I think the changes were sound.

Apple is keen to phase out 30pin, and bring the iPad in line with all other iOS devices

The charger should cut down on the 6 hr charge time, which is incredibly annoying

New LTE brings service to Sprint for iPads, and many other carriers around the world.

A6X will probably be a beast with the best GPU performance on any mobile device by a wide margin.

There will be no Ipad 4 queues or people racing to Apple stores to try out Ipad 4 as it's exactly the same and you would struggle to see any difference..

It's not an update simple as..I have 720p on my Iphone 5 and can't see the difference atall and A6 is only faster with Siri.

It's what is commonly called a minor revision. Same design with a few tweaks. Of course there won't be line ups for it. It's only half a year after the 3. They updated the machine with better facetime camera, much better processor and new connector.

What else did you think they'd do? Seriously... It's an update to an existing model, that's all. Not sure what you were expecting.

When Apple updated the MacBook Pro in Feb 2011 then again in Oct 2011.. No one complained.

I have 2 theories:
1. They didn't put a CPU in the Oct model that was twice as fast as the Feb model?
2. They didn't, on the same date of the Oct 2011 announcement, stop selling the Feb 2011 inventory while still selling the 2010 model.

In fact, some Feb 2011 MBP owners probably did complain, you just didn't pay attention.

Maybe these features on ipad 3 released later rarther than rushing out the third model?

yeah I understand "th gen" is more in line with the new Apple terminology, but it's easier to type iPad 4. I hardly think this makes me ignorant. with macbook pros you see stuff like macbook pro unibody 2008 etc etc.. right now we're not so far along that we need to type such long labels in order to be able to distinguish. Eventually it might become early 2012 iPad, late 2012 iPad.. I have no beef with apple wanting to change the name and update more often or whatever the reasoning is, it's just easy right now to say iPad 3 and 4. oh I should have gone back and said 3rd gen and 4th gen.. whoop de doo

Right. Nomatter how you say it, it's all the same.:apple:

Ipad 4 is a weak upgrade for people with Ipad 2/3.

Ipad 3 was only out 7 months ago.

The 4th Gen iPad isn't aimed at people who own the iPad 2 or 3rd Gen. It's aimed at people who don't own an iPad.

Agreed.

Why would they even call it the ipad 4? A more suitable name is the ipad 3S

Uh, they didn't call it the iPad 4. It's just the iPad. That's why they dropped the number from the name with the 3rd generation. That way they can make incremental updates.

The fact that Apple released any update to the main iPad so quickly is amazing enough. Their past history was a one year cycle. They released an update that has expanded LTE support (to keep Europe and Asia happy), a faster processor, and the same price as the one that came out a few months ago, and it's just in time for the holidays. I'd say it was a great move.

Good for new customers yes.

However they will feel just as unhappy if another model is unveiled next March.
