Ahh frayed cables and weak points. Gotta love 'em.

Proprietary connecter? I should hope so. No gauche USB. Hideous.

After all, the battery is very upscale. Fancy leather cases to color-match your attire. Batteries ARE beautiful, when made by Apple. Braided cloth cable, subtle brushed aluminum.

Pebbled or fine-grained?

I’m honestly okay with the battery pack. If it makes it lighter to use that’s better. Plus it can be swapped out mid session and keep going? Yeah.

I’m just wondering what that data port is going to be for! Will they actually allow tethering to a computer? In current VR headsets, modding is a huge draw for users.

I also wonder if you could power it other ways, like from a computer or a wall charger (albeit with a super long cord that doesn’t get in your way) and this battery pack is just available if you don’t want to be stuck in your living room doing it.

So much flop in this one. Swim googles. Battery pack belt. 2 hour battery life. Lol.
It probably will flop, but let's wait till we see it an not these reports. I can't count how many times these things rumor reports are just plain wrong.

Man. I'm trying to keep an open mind here but most of the stuff here, if true, makes this a very unappealing product IMO.

This is the first Apple product I have zero interest in buying if all the early rumors about price, functionality, usability, etc. are close to being accurate. I read an article somewhere that said it is a product in search of a problem to solve and that take sounds spot on to me. I'll wait and see what is reality before making any final decisions, but sure seems like a hard pass.

Two hours is way too long. Make it 15 minutes and I will be buying 2 of these so I can get solid 30 minutes of use. Maybe next generation make a battery backpack but don’t go under 9 lbs of weight.

This thing needs some real games. Not the Nintendo style games we get now from the apps store. Get some big names like Call of Duty etc.

This reminds me of Apple Watch Series 0. A product not even Apple knows who or what it's for.
But envinromentally-wise, its accessories have been compatible for 8 years + (bands and watch charger) which is simply not what this proprietary connector stands for.

If you use it at home, why would you use a battery which will degrade with every circle. Why can't it be plugged in like a notebook? It would annoy me to change the battery after two hours.
I’d imagine if your really wanted to you could just plug your USBC charger into the batter pack on your belt and get a constant charge out of it. Could probably also just use a battery pack to charge the Apple one while it’s being used as well.

I would guess there will still be a market for 3rd party power adapters and batteries.

You would need to wait a couple of years to judge the long-term compatibility of headset accessories. But as of now its no less environmentally friendly than the original Watch was at launch.

It’s nothing, because this is not how the device will charge.
Literally in the article, it says it will charge via USB-C.
That’s how it will charge.
On the other hand, connecting the battery to the device will use this proprietary connector, probably so you don’t accidentally yank out a USB-C cable if you slightly move your head in the wrong way.
Either way, the device will charge via USB-C, and people here just are not reading the actual article because it’s more fun to get angry at nothing.
Nice! :)

I have been thinking back to the times when Apple used proprietary or seemingly proprietary plugs/sockets. While I'm not a guru on these things nor have I dug deep, my experience over the years doesn't really suggest that Apple necessarily chose these kinds of hardware technology out of "spite" or out of wanting to limit the user experience in an unnecessary way.

My experience with Macs began in the late 1980s / early 1990s beginning with the Mac SE/30. At that time, it was common to use either a serial or parallel port to connect things like mouse and printers. Those were some chunky plugs. Apple opted for the Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) and I remember even back then cries of how Apple just like to use proprietary for the sake of being proprietary. I didn't buy that argument back then and it seemed like people were just making a whole lot of fuss. Compare the ADB plug to a parallel or serial port and you'll see the ADB port is really a lot smaller. Yes, it is not as common but there are adapters, as I recall, if you wanted to hook up a parallel/serial device.

A more recent example is the FireWire plug issue which again people cried foul. FireWire was actually not proprietary to Apple and those who cried foul either ignored that or didn't realize it. True, it was not as widely adopted but some PC manufacturers did adopt it. And, there was good technology reason to include FireWire. It provided faster speed and more data could be transferred at once compared to whatever versions of USB was available at that time.

And of course, more recently is the hub bub around Lightning cable. While maybe one could argue that Apple was a little slow to move USB C to its mobile/mobile-type devices, the iPad Pro did use USB C for quite a number of years now, so the argument that Apple was keeping the Lightning technology simply to lock people in did not make much sense.

Lol. At this point, I just need to see and test the device for myself. I can’t even imagine what this thing would like like based off all these leaks.

Spot on. That dovetails nicely with Apple's long history of other product flops released over the years. I don't know how the company stays in business.

"Swim googles. Battery pack belt. 2 hour battery life. Lol."

Clearly from god's lips, must be true.

Apple is doing it all wrong.
The cable should be permanently attached to a large battery that requires a separate operator to use!
If it worked for beating the Axis, it can work for anything!

exactly this.

This product is talked about, and mockup pictures are presented as if it's something real. it's not! ... yet.

Reminds me of many years in the past when the rumour of Apple making their own TV set was all but guaranteed - people had seen it apparently... and yet it was always 'just' about to be released. I think we went through about 4 years of articles such as this talking about it as a done deal and it would be released soon... and then when that deadline was missed it would be released next quarter and on and on and on....
But of course that product never materialised. Im sure there was no smoke without fire and Apple might have been tinkering with such a product - but eventually the newer model AppleTVs were released and rumour of a full blown TV vanished overnight never to be heard from again.
