the connector is fine to connect to the headset because it needs to lock in so you don't unplug it by accident when moving your head around and swinging your arms. Having it not able to be removed from the battery pack sucks though because you just know its going to get damaged eventually and then it will require replacing the entire battery

We don’t need another MagSafe standard. The one on the iMac should be sturdy enough.

What’s the USB-C data port for? Will it be used during usage or just for updates? Doesn’t the headset have WiFi? Couldn’t it be connected just like an Apple Watch? Or will we be expected to dangle 2 cords from the unit while it’s in use?

Let’s redesign this. Battery chemicals molded into the frame itself like a MacBook, not removable. MagSafe 3 for charging using existing MacBook chargers. Wifi, Bluetooth. Digital crown. New name: eyePods Max.

exactly this.

This product is talked about, and mockup pictures are presented as if it's something real. it's not! ... yet.

Reminds me of many years in the past when the rumour of Apple making their own TV set was all but guaranteed - people had seen it apparently... and yet it was always 'just' about to be released. I think we went through about 4 years of articles such as this talking about it as a done deal and it would be released soon... and then when that deadline was missed it would be released next quarter and on and on and on....
But of course that product never materialised. Im sure there was no smoke without fire and Apple might have been tinkering with such a product - but eventually the newer model AppleTVs were released and rumour of a full blown TV vanished overnight never to be heard from again.

Yes, the big difference in this vs that is that that would have Apple trying to sell a TV with Apple's margin, using the exact same panel likely in whoever Apple used to source the panel, available in that source's-branded television too WITHOUT the Apple margin. There could be no argument of superior picture because it would be the exact same picture. Apparently, the entire argument to buy the Apple television would have been some variation of built in AppleTV... which would be a relative disaster given how fast those become obsolete (as we see with "smart TV" cuts of app-servicing functionality since). In short: Apple fat margin vs. nearly no margin competition, mostly as the same offering (made the same by attaching an external AppleTV).

In this product, Apple can apply a fat margin against no direct competition. There should be enough uniquely Apple in this that even the Samsung scenario will take a while and may still not clearly match up well.

Most simply: there is massive profit in each unit sold here and Apple must believe that there will be many more buyers than the incredible pessimism within this thread implies (I see great potential for this product myself if it can do just ONE thing well). An Apple Television probably would have sold the fans and then died on the vine... as the masses would have picked up the exact same screen from the manufacturer and- if they wanted Apple TV- an external Apple TV to replicate the OS too.

So... it's magsafe so you can easily yank the belt battery out of the headset, instantly shutting it off and ruining whatever you were doing? Lol.

I assume the magnetic element is so that you don't have to fumble around trying to find the hole to plug it in when you switch batteries. You'll probably be able to do it while wearing it and the magnetic cable will snap into place and then a simple twist will secure it. Just align it somewhere near and it will connect easily.

This is from yesterdays Mark Gurman article published early in the morning. Here’s where it is discussed. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/vr-ar-device-use-cases.2386114/post-32118404

As you can see the article is examining how Apple might try to market this, not so much that hardware details are factual.
God damn you, Tim Apple and your gaslighting about being an environmentally friendly company
The fact their environmentalism is just marketing has been obvious since they started making glued together products that are very difficult to repair. The best example was when they released the disposable AirPods, where you’re lucky to get more than a few years of use before tossing them.

Interesting how nothing was said in this article regarding someone who 'allegedly' demo tested a unit.

Basically a 'leaker' knows someone who demo tested a unit and this demo tester is supposedly to have given the leaker information about the unit. So, someone who has 'allegedly' had their hands on one fails to tell the leaker about how the headset charges and here we are with another person trying to tell the Apple community that the headset will charge is a certain manner. Seems to be a case of one hand does not know what the other hand is doing.

The whole world got trolled so hard... I don't believe this is a real product, it's too goofy to be real and we still have zero evidence from Apple. When WWDC comes and goes without a word about this thing, maybe more people will stop believing in these rumors.

Although we can only go by rumours, and perhaps I'm wrong, but I think this Apple VR headset will be the company's biggest flop ever. I just don't see people walking around with a headset and a battery.

What if "walking around" is not the popular way to use them? At other points in history:
  • "who would want to carry around a slab of glass in their pocket all the time?"
  • "who would ever want to lug around a whole computer?"
  • "Why would anyone want to carry around a tablet?"
And on and on.

This crowd thoroughly ridiculed the phablet form factor for YEARS. I recall images of iPads being held up to ears like someone was trying to use them as a phone. And then Apple rolled out their own phablets and BAM- all of that pessimism... all that "fragmentation" worry... all that "one handed use"... all that "man purses"/"pants with bigger pockets"... all that "abomination"/"ugly"/"99% would never want"... just evaporated, seemingly overnight.

Since this thing is only a rumor, it seems to be in the same camp as iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch, etc BEFORE Apple took the stage to actually roll those out. There was PLENTY of pessimism ahead of each of those launches when they too were only rumors. And then Apple finally shows the new thing off, it has an Apple logo on it and the pessimists seem to thin out as if there were never any such comments at all.

I don't know that it will be the same this time. But I won't be surprised either. History clearly shows that "we" can up to entirely HATE concepts in rumor-driven, pre-launch and then flip to "shut up and take my money", waking up at 3am to try to be FIRST to get an order in mania. Gushing & praising & wild evangelizing soon follows.

I'm hearing the WWDC coming and going will be in the Apple car. ;)

So a battery that cost Apple $10 will cost consumers $150 and a replacement cable to connect the battery to the headset will only be $59!
